Maybe I'm an ass but I just don't like ray liotta. They're both films that if they're on the TV I'd watch them btu always prefered Casino for the visuals, the drama and the meticulous narrative.

When DiCaprio sees the fire in The Departed, we know the character is thinking of hell, it doesn't have to be telegraphed to us. The painting in Goodfellas becomes dozens of paintings in Casino, each helping to show something direct about the characters -- that is metaphysical.

Goodfellas is a great biography, and it's good structurally as well... It sounds pretentious but we're thrown into a non-metaphysical world at the beginning of the movie, they effectively kill 'God', right? Then when we actually reach the moment where they head to Tommy's mother's house, the painting is an accusation, it's a spiritual representation, metaphysics is back in a big way and its incriminating to each of them. I don't know if the director can repeat that same half/half structure, or whether he should opt to tell another fully metaphysical story like Casino. It's surprising that people who are interested in Jewish metaphysics haven't taken a closer look at Casino.

I sort of expect 'The Irishman' to begin as a metaphysical story, and then to revert to something more physically grounded -- essentially an inversion of Goodfella's structure.
