Great film, great musical score throughout. I don't think that there's much debate about whether or not it's a great film (I'm pretty sure it won Best Picture), although the historical inaccuracies may bother some people.

I don't think an epic (or any movie) needs to cost a shit ton of money to be good, it just needs a good writer and story. Garbage movies like that Gods of Egypt shit that came out a few months ago cost like $150m to make, which is far more than Gladiator cost to make. That much is true for sure. One of the biggest problems I see in hollywood nowadays is a lack of risktaking though. Most of the movie plot points and character decisions (especially big budget films) are decided by the studio through committee based off of what made the most money previously. Studios use test audiences to the point that risky or creative ideas are completely disregarded. I wonder how many great films are never made because studios refuse to take risks..

Because second and final act are bone dry. It is full early 00's generic movie junk, which takes away from the cinematic experience.

it's not a particularly challenging or interesting film beyond a predictable and cookie-cutter plot, some nice visuals

Many years ago I watched Kingdom of Heaven's theatrical release without knowing about Director's Cut. I hated it, obviously. Recently I decided to watch the DC just to see how much better the movie is. I didn't hate it, but it's still bad.

Its whole premise is built upon shitty cliches, and while I'm not expecting Hollywood movies to be historical documentaries, seeing as many basic discrepancies with the historical reality as I did in KoH is really bad, especially since it relies on history so much. Even worse is that the real-life dude Orlando Bloom is playing had a super awesome life, so the changes that Scott made are not only dumb [as I mentioned above, cliches], but pointless as well. No way in hell would a bastard be allowed to not only hold his father's title but also to inherit his land and have everyone kiss his ass like they do in this movie. Like literally Orlando boy arrives in Jerusalem for less than a day and all the most powerful people in the world bow to him like he's a demigod despite all they know about him is him being his father's long-lost bastard. Not to mention how much like a video-game tutorial the first part of the movie felt, with the protagonist asking retarded questions like "who are those obviously muslim looking guys?" just so you'd have his mentor-characters throw exposition to the viewer. And don't get me started on how one-dimensional the Crusaders are portrayed as, they literally slaughter Muslims and bathe in their blood while the Muslims are all level headed, wise and intelligent. The movie's message has the subtlety of a jackhammer.

Gladiator is essentially a sappy movie about a man avenging his family's death and is carried by a terrific actor playing the protagonist. Kingdom of Heaven is a very very dumb movie with a horrible actor playing the MC but has really good music and cinematography. If you want to watch KOH, those are its only redeemable qualities imho.
