So good, I witch (lol) more movies were bold enough to partially alienate the audience to build atmosphere and world without exposition. The aesthetic motives and elegant emotional tension are great. The horror comes from family, isolation, and the religious view of the world.

I want more like it.

I'm amazed at how well that scene works. With the simple backdrop and shooting it in broad daylight and having the goat just be a normal goat it should look silly but the scene worked a hundred percent for me.

Loved everything about it. Especially the period dialogue

>“The Devil is in thee and has had thee. You’re smeared of his sin. You reek of Evil!… You bewitched thy brother, proud slut! Did you not think I saw thy sluttish looks to him, bewitching his eye like any whore?"

Why don't people talk like this anymore, it's amazing.
I especially found it interesting that all of the families fears were justified. At first you think they're just religious nuts, but witches, the devil, evil, all turn out to be real. Really cool subversion.
>>
>>80802142
There's one true jump scare in the film, but it's done really well. Also when the witch's foot came out of the hovel was a scary moment. The music and camera work built up that moment so well that even though what was on the screen wasn't all that scary, it still made me more scared than any other generic horror movie.

That movie made me nostalgic for the 80's even though it wasn't set in the 80's and I wasn't even alive then. Any film that can do that is good in my book. It's also a very original concept that built suspense really well, even if it lacked muh jump scares
>>

It's revealed in the dialogue that they came from England, and it's implied that they were quite well off there by the mother's silver cup and her mention of glass windows, luxuries which would not have been available to the poor at the time. it can be deduced from that that they were not typical peasant scum, but were actually quite well off and simply came to America to become closer to God. The language sounded very Shakesperean and beautiful to me, which makes sense since the movie was set shortly after the Bard of Avon's time.

Also, who was this rabbit? Was it another manifestation of Satan, like Black Phillip?

I don't think Satan really cared about teaching anyone a lesson. Everything he did, he did to draw Thomasin closer to him. The sole purpose of driving the family apart and turning the family against her was to get her to become a witch. Remember that all of the witches, at least originally, were young and beautiful women, like Thomasin. Those are the people he wants to serve him. She was also the only one out of all of them who was without sin, which probably made Satan especially attracted to her.
>>
>>80809424
> only one out of all of them who was without sin
She did let her little brother steal a horse and sneak into the woods just so she wouldn't have to be given to another family. She knew full well that there was something fucked up in those woods as she said herself that she saw no wolf when the baby got snatched.

What sin did she commit by allowing him to do that though? She had to make a difficult choice between ratting her brother out thereby betraying his trust, or accompanying him into the woods. Like most teenagers that always think they're adults, she probably thought that they could handle whatever it was. Also that she didn't tell their parents was probably because she didn't respect them, especially her father. Her mother was a wreck, but her father she viewed to be especially impotent, all he does is chop logs, as she mentions, he can't hunt or do anything useful really.

>>
>>80809745
In that case, if a teenager's faults can be forgiven seeing as they're teenagers and are "doomed" to act a certain way, then all of the children should be excluded from the sin list too. If lucie only wants females, that little shit of a twin should have also been in his sights, yet she was just used a tool instead of being groomed.

Not to mention, if
>Also that she didn't tell their parents was probably because she didn't respect them
is true, then she broke one of the ten commandments. No commandment about honouring thy brother.

I don't know, this just doesn't seem to hold all the way through.
>>
>>80809745
Oh, and the sin she committed by doing that is pride. A case could be made for greed too.
>>
>>80809961
I was just thinking of that commandment when I wrote my post. I don't think having a realistic view of your father and mothers' shortcomings is the same as not honoring them. She does her chores, prays fastidiously, and is the most mature of her siblings. In all those ways she "honors them" even when they give her no reason to honor them, calling her a witch without evidence.

As for the teenager thing, yea I guess you have me there. I still think she was the most innocent of the bunch. She only went along with her brother's act of disobedience, she didn't initiate it.
>>
>>80808805
The father "let" himself be killed though. Had he defended himself he wouldn't have been killed.

By your logic, the entire Renaissance era, the rediscovery and resurgence of classical philosophy and art was a mistake. Were Petrarch and Michelangelo "artificial and romantic", as you put it, because they admired and enjoyed the reproduction of classicism?

>>
>>80813529
hm
>>
>>80813529
>The villain ends up being the goat
>She sells her siblings to satan for a stick of butter
The goat is a vessel. Just like the rabbit. Her siblings are already dead as is her whole family, she turns to satan to take care of her, something both god and her family couldn't do.
>>
>>80813655
>The goat is a vessel. Just like the rabbit

but it's the goat, the goat got introduced and even implied at some point to be the villain. was it satan possessing the goat? yes sure but it was the goat the whole time

satan literally offered her butter. that's it, that's the care he took of her. if she died then and there, she'd go to heaven. but she chose butter over eternal salvation

quality choice/10
>>
>>80813529
The goat was a manifestation of Satan. Satan's a pretty formidable villain.

And her siblings were little shits, especially the twins. They deserved to be taken and made into flying ointment.
>>
>>80813768
he's offering her worldly luxury. He isn't literally just offering her butter when he says that. He's saying, "come with me and you will have all the material excess that you have been missing out on."
>>
>>80813821
>the goat wa sa manifestation of satan

but he was introduced as the fucking goat, he even killed the father as a goat, for all intents and purposed he might as well have been a talking goat.

>>80813895
>he's offering her worldly luxury
>he's offering her the worldly luxury a forest in the 17ths century can offer

so not even butter? what can he possibly offer her that's better than eternal salvation? name one thing that would make selling her soul make any remote sense
>>
>>80813993
>for all intents and purposed he might as well have been a talking goat.
I actually would've preferred he stayed as a goat the whole time, and never appeared as human near the end
>>
>>80804759
>you live happily ever after
are you seriously dumb enough to believe a word from fucking SATAN?

Also, the only person in the family loyal to Christian values was Thomasin and that's why he chose her as a target. Father was prideful, mother was jealous, younger brother wanted to fuck his sister
>>
>>80813993
I never said it was a good deal. That's the thing with Satan, he offers you a deal that seems sweet but it's always at the cost of something far more valuable. Thomasin was also probably hungry, grief-stricken, and knew she would die without help or accused of killing her family if she went back to the Puritan settlement. People, especially teenage girls, wouldn't usually make the most logical decision in that sort of shape. It makes perfect sense why she would choose short-term gratification over Salvation and what's in her best interests in the long-term. People do that all the time even today.

And there are a few things that make her decision understandable. One is that throughout the film, all their prayers, their piety, do nothing. God sits idle while the devil works, He doesn't lift a finger to help His faithful in the film. Thomasin was obviously disillusioned with God's lack of presence as well as her family's betrayal of her when she hadn't done anything wrong.
>>
>>80813993
>but he was introduced as the fucking goat, he even killed the father as a goat, for all intents and purposed he might as well have been a talking goat.

It's never explicitly said that he's Satan, but it's heavily implied in the rest of the film. The witches serve Satan, as they are his concubines. The mother says "even the devil quotes scripture." The devil is certainly real in the confines of the film, so it's not exactly a huge leap to conclude that the goat is a manifestation of Satan. Especially since he asks her to sign his book.
>>
>>80814252
listen mate, yes it's true that a traumatized teenager wouldn't make the right choice, it's true that people go for short term gratification etc etc

but if you say 100% proof that satan exists, that should snap you out of anything. i'm 100% atheist, if i saw satan in front of me and i made sure i wasn't insane and that this was actually happening i'd immediately start praising jebus with my dying breath. no one would risk eternal salvation for anything, no matter how "sweet" it seems. i know it's a folk motif that served the clergy well in medieval times so it's been perpetuated a lot in folklore, but in reality no one would offer their immortal soul for anything, people are willing to martyr themselves for their belief in an immortal soul, no one would sell their actually existing immortal soul for butter and a dress

the movie was good up to the point where the goat started talking. it could have been even better if say after that sequence, they showed that she was talking to nobody or that she was alone next to the fire and that everything was in her head. a talking goat offering you butter for your soul might have been a good aesthetic for medieval folklore, but it definitely ruined it for me

Well that's the thing. It literally is a folktale. The subtitle even is "A New-England Folktale." A pious young woman is lured to sell her soul for a little material comfort. While it would make more sense for her to not accept Satan's offer, this is exactly the sort of story that I imagine would have been told to Puritan children to instill in them a fear of evil, witches, and the devil. It isn't meant to be a thoughtful depiction of how people make choices or anything.

Also you're assuming that Thomasin had even the slightest doubt about God. She was never a skeptic even when she had no proof of God's existence. She, like the rest of her family, was a firm believer through and through.

One thing I just thought of is that Thomasin seems to despise weakness. She mocks her father for his inability to provide, or do anything other than chop wood. Perhaps she also came to spite God for His own lack of ability or willingness to provide? Maybe she thought that if God is willing to stand by and let His faithful suffer, that He is actually weaker than Satan, and therefore she would not be condemning herself to damnation. Just a thought.

but the medium of cinema doesn't work with folk tales like that. it would work as a story, or a book, or even theater. but at a movie it just didn't work, for me at least. i got what it was trying to do, later i read it was based on some priest's fiction books about what he believed witches did, but seeing it makes it utterly ridiculous.

why
>>

because the aesthetic looked silly, simple as that. a bad cgi talking goat was extremely anti-climactic and ruined the atmosphere completely. up to that point you didn't know it was satan doing all that shit
>>
>>80816157
well I don't agree with any of that.

really liked it

HOWEVER

i watched it with subtitles on. i can definitely understand people getting lost with the old english talking style if they were going off audio alone
>>
>>80816171
well no shit, that's why its called an opinion man. we can't all find the same aesthetic pleasing or unsettling in this case.

for example for me, a movie that really had me uneasy was room 1408, but i know people who found that movie boring.
>>
>>80816157
I don't think they ever showed the goat talking on screen, did they? Otherwise the goat wasn't cgi, it was a real goat. A very uncooperative one too, according to the director.

I liked the aesthetic personally, especially how the woods are so thick that you can only see a few yards into them before its blackness. Very foreboding.

some of those are good movies though. even plebs get it right every now and then
>>
What is the fathers fucking problem? Why the fuck did he just leave the plantation?
>>
>>80816537

it had something to do with the church stuff. like he was more conservative than them and didn't like the direction their church was going. i don't think they got too specific, but at the very beginning he's basically telling everyone to fuck off and burn in hell
>>
I'm only an hour in, but where the fuck is the Baby?
>>
>>80816371
i think they did. ye the atmosphere was very on point, if they hadn't pushed the satan goat angle i would have loved it. it was ok like that too, just left a comic after-taste in the end. my girlfriend actually started laughing when the goat started talking we were high as kites though
>>
>>80816702
witch took it, they use unbaptized baby fat in their rituals or some shit
>>
>>80816702

You deserve to have this spoiled. Baby's dead and won't come back
>>
>>80816702
>>80816748
Yea, an old folk belief about witches held that witches would kill unbaptized babies, mash them to a pulp, and cover themselves and their brooms in the pulp to fly. And that's exactly what we see the witch doing in the movie.
>>
>>80816714

the goat talks but i'm pretty sure he's offscreen. like i don't think they have his mouth/lips move to say the words
>>
Why in the fuck do they just not immediately leave as soon as the Older Brother comes back? Or better yet when he died? I mean why did they not just realize that something is majorly fucked up and just leave?
>>
>>80817002
Also these little fucking Nigger Twins can just go fuck themselves, are they just faking this shit?
>>
>>80816864
I'm pretty sure the only time he talks is when he changes into a human form
>>
>>80817002
Because they had faith that God would deliver them. And they were banished from the settlement, they had nowhere else to go. The devil also lured them into a false sense of security by speaking, through the son as he died, making it seem as if he was seeing God, when really the devil was just quoting scripture through him.
>>
I came in expecting some great dark imagery and shocking stuff, especially after the badass intro where she grinds the baby up and shit. Ended up really getting nothing and being bored to shit. When she shows up in their little shed laughing was cool tho
>>
>>80802126
You had good expectation but they did not tell you why this family was choosen. Why them?
You wish the story would have been more fleshed out. You gave it a 6.5/10
>>
>>80802126
It's a good movie but I didn't really like it that much on the first viewing. I thought it was going to be more of a typical horror movie with witches running around.

Second viewing is way better.
>>
>>80817348
>, when really the devil was just quoting scripture through him.
How though? I thought he could just appear as things but not talk through them. Also can't he only talk through the witches? Because there his concubines?

There's a reason witches were such an effective scare tactic
>>
When is the scene with her selling her siblings out to the devil for a stick of fucking butter? In 10 minutes this is going to be over.
>>
>>80817579
The mother says something about the devil being able to quote scripture after the son died. I don't know if he literally takes control/possess the witches, I don't think he does. I think he might actually have sex with them though.

>tfw not the devil and don't have a harem of beautiful female servants
>tfw you will never lure a pure qt like Thomasin into serving you
>>
>>80817864
Well why wouldn't he? Also was the son just possessed by him or did was he actually saved by jesus?
>>
>>80818316
I dunno, maybe he does. The film doesn't give any indication that the devil takes control of the witches, although they obviously are bound to serve his wishes and he probably could if he wanted to. Also he evidently can assume a human form, shown when he places his hand on Thomasin's shoulder.

And no, I think the whole thing was just an act that the devil was putting on, I don't think it was the son speaking or seeing Jesus.
