Whilst I understand the point, I enjoy 1:1 adaptions from manga/novel to tv/movie (games never translate medium because gameplay) the addition of audio in music and voices coupled with animation or humans brings works with action to life.

What I hate more is misappropriation of an IP and bastardizing it. Just create a different work with the tweaked elements you want. You may be called out for making a rip off, but that's the basis of all media, slight variation on what came before. Your show should stand on it's own merits with the name brand you're trying to copy from.

When you do an adaption you're always compared to the source and it tends to be inferior.

Are you talking about the Japanese movie? Because I saw the anime and I remember him killing almost exclusively Japanese people for a while before gradually branching out to the whole world. That's why L is able to narrow it down to Japan, and then one specific part of Japan, so quickly. The early murders were all happening in Tokyo-area prisons.
