the Simpsons died on the same day as this guy.
>>
It's not like the episode are made sequentially years apart. They make whole seasons at once. Season 8 was the last top quality one. Seasons 9-13 were the failure points, with every season getting worse than the last.
>>
>>80787719

I don't know. I like the Phil Hartman idea. The episode that made me personally say "why am I watching this shite?" and watch no more new ones, was the one where they do bible stories.
>>
>>80787719
nah.

I didn't even realise people thought it was a bad episode until I was on sites like this.

Season 9 was good. Season 10 was shakey but would still be considered ok if simpsons had ended there.

It was downhill rapidly, at about season 14/15 I realised it just wasn't the same show anymore and stopped.
>>
>>80787719
Why the fuck didn't they end it with the movie? It had gone downhill before that, but at least then they could have gone out with a bang.
>>
seasons 9 and 10 are still pretty good, 11 and 12 there are noticeable problems, the show is unwatchable after that
>>
>>80787719

>>
No, what a stupid meme.

It's a good episode and they had done same type of shit since the beginning. Literally no difference to B-Sharps. Simpsons died a slow death when the good writers left and Scully and Jean became showrunners.
>>
Simpsons was never funny and is purely run on nostalgia, grow the fuck up
>>
It died with the Baldwin/Basinger ep.
>>
>>80789197
because of dannyboytbh types who still find it hilarious
>>
>>80789197
this and people after the movie, just took everything from the movie and butt raped it until it was dead
>>
>>80787889
I used to like that trilogy of bible stories - until The Simpsons abused the concept of trilogy stories, and produced some absolute garbage
>>
>>80787719
The problem with that episode is that it is directly preceded by "The City of New York vs Homer Simpson" which is one of the finest episodes they ever made.

I always felt the show went down the toilet in terms of quality after Season 10 but it wasn't completely dead to me. Until I saw "Lisa Goes Gaga"

>lisa episode
>featuring lady gaga
>no good jokes
>filled with shitty musical numbers
>lady gaga shilling for twenty-three minutes
>no interesting subplots
>no subplots at all, actually
>shitty deus ex machina ending
>shitty animation like the last eight seasons
>no memorable lines

Easily the worst Simpsons episode ever written. No contest. Nothing compares in shit-factor to Lisa Goes Gaga.

There are many periods to the simpson prosperity and quality. As I can recognize the true golden age of it, I still do enjoy watching some of the newer episodes. As user >>80794147
mentions, this is where there is a dark pit of never ever again, right along lisa fucks young hemingway and Grandpa is gay episodes. I still do derive pleasure from episodes like >>80793612
mentions, even though they aren't up to the quality check most of us got used to. Even later, the Simpsons as an animated show still was better than 90% of adult television in 2010ish

season 9 is still great, with a few noticeable blunders.

Season 10 still has some genuine classics, but starts has a lot more weak and mediocre episodes.

Season 11 and 12 are perfectly watchable and even great at certain points but has no real classics and is past its prime.

Beyond that it's not worth watching at all and just gets worse and worse. I'm probably being generous saying to watch up to season 12 but I maintain that there's still top notch Simpsons all the way up to season 10.
>>
>watched a new episode recently

>there is maybe a dozen episodes with actual continuity and consequences that follow through to other episodes
>meanwhile the other 600 episodes are allowed to establish and then change shit without further thought
Why is this one picked on so hard? Every other episode is allowed to reset back to normal. Homer never actually slows down on drinking, Bart never learns a lesson, Lisa always comes back just as self-righteous, Krusty will always be a forgetful dick

I liked the episode at least.
>>
I love it when people say the simpsons died with the Principle and the Pauper, this is the signal that tells me they don't know shit about The Simpsons and are total retards that can't think for themself and don't actually like The Simpsons.

If you think the simpsons died with that episode you should kill yourself/ go to reddit (baiscally the same thing).
>>
>>80796517
This. Don't try to fucking meme and say "DURRR I LOVE DA SIMPSONS" and then completely disparage over a decade of the product you are claiming to be a fanatic of.

The Simpsons is still one of the best shows on TV.
>>
>>80787719
The simpsons died when it stopped being about issues a family might realtistically face, or exaggerated caricatures of them.
>>
>>80787719

>>
I think the last season hasn't been all that bad. It's something else, but not bad.
>>
HAVE NO FEARS WE'VE GOT STORIES FOR YEARS
>>
>>80796515
Because they had never completely rebooted a character so hard before. The fact that they reset to normal doesn't really mean much when you completely pick apart the background of an extremely well-established character. Plus, even for a cartoon about yellow people, the idea that Skinner could just fool the other guy's mom for decades is dumb and lazy.

And then once you dip into that well once it encourages the writers to do it again and again. It basically became the backbone of the series from seasons 11-15 until it fell into the "LE MEME CELEBRITY OF THE WEEK" trap.
>>
I re-watched the series in this past few weeks and you can really tell that the problem is marge and lisa. They became literally perfect while homer and bart went completely mentally retarded.
>>
>>80797230
>Rebooted
The Simpsons isn't really that type of show and it never tried to be in those years. That crap about canon, non-canon etc really just comes with obsessive retards who can't enjoy something for what it is.
>>
>>80789197
What does /tv/ think about the Simpsons movie? Just as shitty as the newer seasons? Just curious
>>
>>80797462
Okay chief then what would you call narrative consistency? I'm not sperging over Simpsons novel or Simpsons wiki canon. I'm just saying the writers spent 8 seasons building up the backstory of Skinner through brief but hilarious insights into his past in Vietnam and his weird relationship with his mom, and then tossed 95% of it out the window for a throwaway episode with a weak central joke, just so they could briefly portray Skinner as the motorcycle driving badass who tells kids to fuck off. It felt like weak and rushed writing, for a show that previously was a towering achievement in terms of its writing.
>>
>>80797543
I really like the movie.

But then it is now 10 years old...
>>
>>80797543
I liked it. They were smart enough to bring back many of the old writers and some of the gags are pretty good.

>>
>>80797693
They weren't building anything. As you say it was just brief gags of him in Vietnam. In this episode we are still told that he went to vietnam but with a different name. The brilliant part of this episode it just how surreal is it, but I suppose you think the writers are thick enough to actually just try to have Skinner change into a "badass" while it's clear how ackward he looks in that role. It also helps when they clearly told everyone that "no one is ti mention these events" to prevent cannon faggs sperging out.
>>
>>80796321
you're probably right, I'd say edna krebapples voice actress dying woke them up to that fact.
>>
>>80797543
it kinda sucked. I mean, it's "watchable season 13+ episode" tier at best.
I'd take any golden age episode in a heartbeat. As a matter of fact, i watch the first 11 seasons in shuffle everynight and i haven't seen the simpsons movie again since it's release.

>>
Ya I don't see the big deal about this episode, if you're looking for continuity and canon in the Simpsons you're watching the show wrong anyways. Plus the episode was actually funny.

There were way worse episodes that season but it took another couple of years before the show was unwatchable.
>>
>>80796770
So about season 3 or 4.
>>
Whats the name of that guy that does the crappy video summery of newer episodes?

>>
>>80797869
Yeah this, I keep seeing that one "building backstory" line in regards to Skinner, it probably originated on that Zombies Simpsons site.

Are you meant to watch next week knowing, as Skinner disciplines Bart and recalls back to Vietnam, that "THIS IS ALL A SHAM, WE KNOW THE REAL YOU, WHY ISN'T BART CALLING YOU OUT?"

Na. It's the fucking Simpsons. Besides a random death for marketing purposes there is no 'build up', no story. Just gags.

I like how you try to group the people who got bothered by it in some fringe, small group yet the episode being so widely hated proves otherwise, and in fact regular people do care about characters that they spent 8 seasons growing up with.

Same reason people complain about shameless cash-ins on old beloved series like Transformers or TMNT.

Principal and the Pauper was a leftover episode from the season 8 production cycle and one of the last episodes made by the outgoing showrunners. Even if you hated it, it had nothing to do with the team who made season 9.

It's just the kind of thing Oakley & Weinstein did with the George Bush episode and Homer's Enemy, having a "normal" person come to Springfield and shake things up. None of those episodes were very popular at the time.

But Mike Scully's Simpsons was nothing like that, it was more about Homer being a complete jackass and getting away with it. "Trash of the Titans" was probably where Scully's approach completely went off the rails or at least where it was clear what his approach was. Homer just acts like the worst person on earth for 22 minutes and nobody cares, and then there's gross-out humor and an ending that doesn't even pretend to make sense, and a celebrity cameo and a wasted guest voice (Steve Martin).

The fact that Scully picked that to be the 200th episode and was therefore proud of it, was the clue to the fact that he had a juvenile approach to writing the show.

It's not like Skinner was out of character though. It actually provided background for why he became such a stick-in-the-mud and a mama's boy (she wasn't his real mom and they both knew it, and he always wanted a mom).

It wasn't a great episode but part of the joke is that this big revelation didn't actually change anything we knew about the character.

You are right on the money as far as I'm concerned.

10 is where it starts to stray a bit as far as consistency goes but still is very watchable and has its moments, beats the vast majority of modern TV by a mile.

11 & 12 is where the decline becomes much more apparent but is still as you said watchable.

13 is the point of no return, while 13-movie are "watchable" they are so far from the formula and running gags that made the golden age what it was.

The movie and everything past it is just filler to play between commercials.

Marge divorces Homer and is a Senator or shit
Bart lost all his money in parties with the latest celebrities (cameo with Bojack Horseman)
Lisa goes to Harvard...as a Gender Politics teacher, is a single mom

The Simpsons is still as good as it ever was

Principal and the Pauper is a really good episode and I don't understand why it gets all the hate.

The show dying came with that lazy fucking "Behind the Laughter" bollocks. As soon as The Simpsons started crashing through the fourth wall and not just nodding at it occasionally, all subtlety was lost and it gave the writers an excuse to just write hacky nonsense.

WHAT THE FUCK

I coulda swore the movie was like 4/5 years old tops

Stopped watching around season 10.

I watched Zombie Simpsons for the first time about 3 years ago on an 11 hour flight from London to San Francisco. The episode was more painful than the 11 hour flight.

I don't know what season it was and I don't care. It was a bunch of random characters like Homer, Professor Frink and others getting together to try and write a teen novel and make money

as a latino, to me they died when they changed the voices

"When you dish upon a star" is the first episode where there is more focus on celebrity cameos than the Simpsons/citizens of Springfield and is where the show dies.
>>
I really hate the episodes where they just take a random character and then make up a backstory for them. Like when it turns out Carl is Icelandic, or the Crazy Cat Lady used to be a lawyer. It's as if they're not only content with running the quality of the show into the ground, they also want to retroactively ruin all the characters.
>>
No. The show began to decline in season 9 and was still watchable for a season or two after.
