Its a simplified idealized version of a human, most mangakas ignore the facial and skin color difference in races as they usually make the entire story take place in one location with majority of Asians living there. But not all, those who do draw whites in their mangas often draw them different, with more angular faces and more pronounced eyebrows and eyes.

And no Asians, especially the Japanese who make most of manga exported to us dont want to be white. In fact Japan is considered among the most xenophobic countries in the world, they fucking hate white people.

What I never understand is why filmmakers / studios continuously try to adapt an entire anime / manga to live-action rather than just taking the good bits.

Aronofsky had the right idea with Perfect Blue (even though Perfect Blue is great and would have been just fine adapted scene-for-scene to live action). He bought the rights and used the parts he want for his own, independent film.

The best thing about Death Note by a huge margin is the premise. It's the only reason anyone has ever watched the anime or read the manga. "What if you had a book which would kill anyone whose name you wrote in it?" That is undeniably an interesting premise.

Rather than trying to translate autistic and stylised characters like L, Near, Mello and Ryuk to live action, why not take the intellectual property and write a story around it that doesn't involve all the stuff which instantly ruins suspension of disbelief in live action?
