Attention /who/

A source has informed me that Holly Taylor has been cast as 13. Her companions will be an older man and woman. "I liked the almost paternal interactions between Capaldi and Bill, but I thought it would be fun to turn that around. Like Tennant and Wilf, if they were both 20 years younger."

The format will return to 20-25 episodes of 23 minutes each, as in most of the Classic era. But instead of 6-part serials, they will mostly be standalone episodes where "the characters are generally in the same place at the end as they were at the start, so casual viewers can come and go as they please".

Also, Chibnall has hired his writers room, but it's in Hollywood. Most of the staff writers have experience in sitcoms, teen dramas, and superhero shows.

Starting in S11, the show will be a BBC/CW/Space coproduction, mostly filmed in Vancouver.

But that's just what my source says, and I can't tell you who it is because then I'd have to kill you.

The quality is shit because it's shot on video, for SD PAL, not because the pirates did a bad job encoding them. There's only so much "restoration" they can do to make it look good on a modern widescreen HD TV. But you can find full DVD rips if you want to waste the bandwidth and disk space.

Just finished my 7th Doctor rewatch. Now I plan to dive into one of the last Whoniverse frontiers which I have not pierced: the VNAs.

Does anyone have a guide? Are there certain ones that I can skip because they suck and don't play any role in any arcs? I don't wanna skip something if it means missing something and will sit through it all if I must.
>>
TURN ON CNN
>>
>>80775931
There are a few you can definitely skip.

But, rather than taking someone's list, I'd just skim reviews for each, decide which ones you want to read, and read summaries for the ones that sound bad. (And you can always check here after each novel to see if anyone wants to change your mind.)

Useful sites:

http://pagefillers.com/dwrg/newadv.htm collects reviews

http://www.drwhoguide.com/books.htm#VIRGIN has summaries of each book, and also has the DWM prelude (usually a one-page story that's worth reading if you read the book) for each one.

http://www.whoniverse.net/discontinuity has a capsule review and summary of the important stuff and fun bits for each book in the same style of as the Discontinuity Guide reference for TV.

They don't it's BBC race mixing propaganda. in real life, Jenna Coleman only dates whitemen, Billy Piper only dates whitemen, Catherine Tate is married to a whiteman, Karen Gillan only likes whitemen, hell even Freema Agyemen only likes whitemen but shes qt so it's okay.

BBC race mixing propaganda is a complete failure.

>>
>>80779810
Wtf, well where is that pic of Colin and Sophie from? I couldn't see it whilst I was skimming though.
>>
>>80779716
It's the only early BBV movie that's not supposed to be Doctor Who with the serial numbers filed off.

But then once they got Pertwee, Davison, Colin, and McCoy to star in it, Briggs couldn't help writing their characters to be a lot more like their Doctors than he originally intended, so…
>>
>>80779997
Think it might be The Stranger actually, pic related is Airzone
>>
>>80779931
Yeah but those others were at least in the DWU or were pseudo-Who. The Airzone Solution is just a random story with bunch of Doctor Who actors.

All of it, but especially the Stranger series, which starts off as DW with the serial numbers filed off but then a few movies in goes out of its way to show us that it has no connection to DW canon whatsoever, after which the characters and situations stop being anything like Sixie/Peri.
>>

But is Myth Runner more or less canon than Do You Have a License to Save This Planet?
>>
>>80780100
Reminds me of this. It's me btw.
>>
>>80779716
Wikipedia actually has a pretty good article on BBV (and also one on Reeltime). Probably because, unlike TDC, they have no need to tie themselves up in edit wars trying to decide whether to delete all information on Cyberon because it didn't license anything DWU or rewrite it all because Zygon did license DWU stuff and used characters from Cyberon…
>>
>>80780588
Not even heard of Myth Runner before. I will never cease to be baffled and impressed by how much obscure who stuff exists.
>>
>>80780788
>Not even heard of Myth Runner before.
It's Briggs' parody of Blade Runner made largely out of clips and outtakes from Myth Makers, the interview/documentary series about Doctor Who that he did for Reeltime.

It's every bit as good as that sounds.

You don't seem to understand how to troll.

A troll is someone who finds something other people are obsessed with and tries to say things that will trigger them and make them act like idiots. That can be funny, even if it usually isn't.

But finding something that you are obsessed with and nobody else cares about and trying to trigger yourself to make yourself act like an idiot—that's not trolling, that's what homeless bag ladies do.

Reminder that the "Doctor Who Live - The Next Doctor" thing was after that year's series had ended.

So we won't be getting announcements until after July.
>>
>>80795682
That's because Smith's departure was announced after the series had ended.

He announced it in June, Capaldi was revealed in August

Capaldi announced in Feb (i think) so an announcement might take place in April or May. Also Smith was announced in Jan 2009, a couple of months before Tennant's final "series" aired

Deep Breath - really weird opener for a Capaldi. Paternosters have a lot of attention on them, it's kind of slow paced, a lot of shitty Moffat gimmicks, I didnt like it very much, I'm sorry,
6.5/10

Into the Dalek
I dont rememeber much, I think I didnt even rewatch it once. I remember that Doc was edgy and people praised episode for it. At least victory was fun first 20 minutes. Sorry
6/10

Robot of Sherwood
It was fun? I think so. Filler is a filler, didnt expect much, didnt get much.
7/10 for Doctor - Robin chemistry and okay directing

Listen
Okay, listen, I dont want to be flamed, but it just didnt work for me. I love experimental episodes, I love episodes that break the formula. But it was straight up overhyped. Great directing and cool concept, but its nonsential in a way that there is no plot. And Clara affecting Doctor's childhood triggered me.
6.5/10 for directing

Time Heist
Karabraxos. Was okay. Teller is great. Twist is obvious, but I think it was okay mostly. 7/10

The Caretaker
It's Gareth! I expected something comfy like Lodger, but Craig > Danny and kids
There were some clever lines, villain feels like something from SJA. I dont remember much about the actual plot, so ill leave it as
6.5/10

Kill the Moon
Ending is most fucked up moment of Capaldi era probably. But surprisingly... I didn't hate it very much. It was just a failed attempt to do something really outstanding. Bonus annoying kid
6/10

Mummy
This one really felt like a cool adventure. It was fun, creepy, had a lot of good dialogues, made me curious from the beginning.
8.5/10

Flatline
It was pretty slow-paced, but had a lot of great moments like Addams Family or Clara Doctor rant. I dont remember villain sadly, they are some 2d entities, right?
7.5/10

In the Forest of the night
Didnt rewatch it since first time, I remember it was pretty boring, annoying, and dull
4/10, directing was ok I think
>>
Dark Water
It was good. The only thing I hated was cybereyes on walls and doors which made the twist PAINFULLY obvious. Otherwise it's damn good.
8.5/10

Death in Heaven
It's a power of love episode. Cybermen plot actually makes no sense. Shit resolution. The very-very ending is good though.
6.5/10 for hype

Last Christmas
Little cute episode with Shona and Santa. I like it because it's adventurous. Ending with Clara not actually leaving is pure canced though.

I saw Nicholas Briggs at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “huh” but he kept cutting me off and going “Exterminate! exterminate! exterminate!” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Mars bars in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be a dalek and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any doctor infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by modulating really loudly.

The Magicians Apprentice/The Witches Familiar 8/10 Great opener when watched together as a movie. Capaldi and Bleach are fantastic. Gomez and Jenna are also fun. People should rewatch as when it's watched separately with a week in between its meh. They don't work separately.

Under The Lake/Before The Flood 7/10 It was good, but not great. Once the villain appears at the end its gets kind of shit. Was really generic and waste of a good costume design.

The Girl Who Died 8/10 its fun, literally fuck haters

The Woman Who Lived 5/10 If it had no alien it would be okay, but they had to shoehorn in a really shitty monster and ruined it.

The Zygon Invasion/The Zygon Inversion 8/10 It was good, unless you disagree with the politics. Then its shit I guess.

Sleep No More 4/10 fuck off gatiss

Face The Raven 8/10

Heaven Sent 10/10 Literally the best episode of NuWho

Hell Bent 8/10 One of the better finales. Capaldi was GOAT as a villain. It's better after the hype has died down. Nothing could live up to Heaven Sent.
>>
>>80801305
>Under The Lake/Before The Flood 7/10 It was good, but not great. Once the villain appears at the end its gets kind of shit. Was really generic and waste of a good costume design.

But otherwise agree.

rewatching eleventh hour

Smith/Pond was a great dynamic
>>
>>80801414
The cliffhanger is implying Doctor have died and became a ghost. Now, it's clear Doctor will not die (Or at least he won't stay dead) so the cliffhanger really is "Why is Doctor's fake ghost floating around the place?"

The answer? Doctor made a holographic ghost because he saw the future where there is a ghost. Made it act the way he knew it will act. He has no motivation to do it steming from his actual personality or a clever plan. He did it because he did, in other words, by authorial mandate alone.
>>
The Magicians Apprentice/The Witches Familiar
Pretty boring and slow paced episodes. I dont really like Missy being frenemy, there were cool scenes with Davros. But gimmicks are really shit. I couldnt enjoy it.
6.66/10

Under The Lake/Before The Flood
Honestly, it was more entertaining than than 9x1 and 9x2. Second part was fucking RUINED though, waste of Fisher King, again, 4th wall breaking and gimmicks.
7/10

The Girl Who Died
Its fun but not fun enough for me. Also this episode born the stupidest immortality thing in media
6.5/10

The Woman Who Lived
I dont remember anything except for Jack reference. Think its shit then.
4/10

The Zygon Invasion/The Zygon Inversion
It was so damn stupid at times. Concept is great, but I had problems with this two-parter, never really bothered what will hapened in the end. Speech is GOAT though. Let it be
6.5/10

Sleep No More - Gatiss tried. 5.5/10

Face The Raven - pretty okay. I dont like Rigsy or Ashildr very much, but it was an actual episode and not a Moffat-writes-a-pun antology like his previous ones
7.5/10

Heaven Sent - 10/10
Yes, I really liked it

Hell Bent - 4/10 after the first run, 6/10 after the second
I dont really want to explain it, but this is just wrong

Mysterio - I had fun.
7/10

We doing this? Fine.

>The Magicians Apprentice/The Witches Familiar
Good but should be better, there's some great moments and great writing here but the story doesn't feel as big as it should. 7/10

>Under the Lake/Before the Flood
Fantastic first part, fantastic cliffhanger, all goes to shit on the second half. 7.5/10

>The Girl Who Died
Pretty standard stuff, it's fun, the face explanation was nice. 6/10

>The Woman Who Lived
Pretty shit m8, the entire conflict central to this episode is completely stupid. Ashildr's entire bit is basically "Immortality sucks, yo" without much else to make it memorable, I honestly feel like TGWD wasn't needed and the character would be much more interesting if she was introduced here. 4/10

>Zygon stuff
Completely serviceable, the politics could be better handled but the overral message is sound and well written, with possibly one of the best speeches in Nu-Who. 8/10

>Sleep No More
I actually don't understand the hate for it, it's your standard "meh" Gaypiss story, not much different than the Lazarus Experiment. I like the concept of the monsters and the whole sleep thing is great, and I honestly think the ending is some thight shit. 6/10

>Face The Raven
I really don't remember much besides Clara's death, acting is on point here as always. Oh yeah, Ashildir's shit in here aswell. 6/10

>Heaven Sent
Lives up to the hype and goes even beyond, it truly is the best story in nu-Who, based Moff, all that shit. 10/10

>Hell Bent
The absolute worst way to live up to anything, a mess of a story that wastes it's incredible set-up, a terrible execution of it's concept and the worst "HEY WHAT IF THE DOCTOR DID BAD STUFF?" story we've gotten so far. Fuck Moff, the hack, all that shit, 0/10
Maybe bump it to 1/10 because Capaldi and Jenna give the performances of their lives in this

>Mysterio
8.5/10. Not even joking. Some good fun, some good writing, some good messages, some good fucking Doctor Who.

Husbands?

The Wedding of River Song

I hate this episode with a passion. It serves badly in its own right, as a conclusion to its series arc, and as part of the ongoing (made up as he goes along) Moffat fairytale.

The Good - Most of the actors are good. The acknowledgement of Nick Courtney's death is a nice little scene. It's very well directed.

The Bad - There is not a single aspect of the script that doesn't stretch my credulity to breaking point and beyond. Taken on its own, divorced from its convoluted arse ache of a story arc, it's simply the story of how changing a fixed point in time makes random ¤¤¤¤ happen. The Doctor has to cop a feel of River Song in order to get time running again. The concept of the whole of time happening at the same time is potentially interesting but, as presented here, it would appear that this boils down to "everyone is stupid."

>You mean after Return of the Living Dad.
No, I meant after Damaged Goods. But either way.

You're not going to ruin So Vile a Sin by reading it early, and you're also not going to ruin the Psi Powers arc by reading it late, so it's just a question of whether you prefer authorial intent (Parkin wrote it to be read along with Vile—which is possible now, even though it wasn't in 1996) or strict chronological order (Parkin confirms that it takes place right before Death of Art for Seven).

Really, if you read it anywhere between Happy Endings and Lungbarrow, it should all be fine.

Early in The Romans, they talk about something that happened at the villa a month ago. And Vicki is tired of spending all this time living as an ancient Roman.

There are also gaps in their stories. Sometimes one runs right into the next, but there's clearly some time between, for example, Reign of Terror and Planet of the Giants. How much time? There's no clue; it could be a day or a year.

And that's even if you ignore novels, audios, etc. If you don't, there's a bunch more stories in each of those gaps, some of which definitely take weeks or months (and of course they leave new gaps, so they still only set a minimum time, not a maximum).

If you actually read the article instead of just the URL:

>Asked by a fan in Issue 509 of DWM (out now) if we can now expect to see the return of William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee in a future multi-Doctor story, Steven Moffat said: “Well, like every other Doctor Who fan, that was my first thought [upon seeing Rogue One]. But, you know, word on Media Street is that Star Wars might have a tiny edge on us, budget-wise.”

>He added: “…I’m fairly sure those are quite expensive movies and possibly that sort of thing might be a bit beyond us for now. More importantly: will the software ever exist that can recreate the comic timing of Patrick Troughton?”

In fact, Cultbox even changed the headline to make it sound more negative on the idea vs. their original version.

This. Basically. Even if it isnt Atwell (I hope it is), it wont be Kris now that he's commented on the subject. Same happened when we thought Rakhee was going to replace Jenna. If it was him, he'd have been told to keep quiet
>>
>>80803808
>If it was him, he'd have been told to keep quiet

He was asked about the rumours. Spose he could've said 'no comment', instead he said he's 'flattered'.

>>
>>80803808
If they're still far from choosing anyone, it's still possible that Kris is at the top of the list and doesn't know it, in which case he'd say the same thing. It's not like Chibs is going to then decide, "Well, I wanted Kris, and I finally convinced the Beeb to bring him in for a test, but now that he's commented on the rumours I guess I have to find someone else".

Eventually, this is going to happen. Probably not this time, but as long as they try to keep the casting a secret, even (for as long as possible) from the people who are on the shortlist for the job, and build hype around it, eventually someone's going to make a "Haha, that'd be great, but no way" comment when they're actually about to get the job.

The BBC just needs to grow some balls and say fuck it and break the contract with the Terry Nation estate because too much Dalek exposure is killing the show, how sad is it now, that the shows most Iconic villains are something fans now dread to see when they show up in a new series now.

The Terry Nation Estate will get frightened and will make a new and more flexible deal with the BBC if they just tell them NO, not every year. because Money talks.

I've always wanted to rate Season 6:

Impossible Astronaut: 8.5/10. Silence are cool and that variety of locations and shot composition make this episode very unforgetable.

Curse of The Black Spot 4/10. Talk about immediate drop, this was a huge letdown with a lame villain and poor script.

Doctor's Wife 9.5/10. Luckily, following is the best Matt Smith episode. Literally nothing wrong with this episode except that it's first third is clearly overshadowed.
Rebel Flesh 7/10. A good two part episode with a good monster and very good dialogue.
Good Man Goes To War 7.5/10. Very fun, very fast, good plot-twist.
Let's Kill Hitler 4/10. There goes the good streak again. Unorganized and uneventful.
Night Terrors 5.5/10. It's not bad, but it's not very effective.
Girl Who Waited 8.5/10. Expands on a concept from Doctor's Wife. A great twist of the usual Doctor being untouchable trope.
God Complex 7.5/10. Best camerwork of the season, better horror than the actual horror episode.
Closing Time 7/10. Craig didn't need to come back, but I'm glad he did. A nice light comedy.
Wedding of River Song 7/10. Very exillerating, but still pretty stupid.

Just do Daleks in 10-01, then only cameos in 11 and 12, and show up in 13-05 or something. No need to renegotiate the contract.

I unironically think The Last of the Time Lords was great and the only good finale of RTD era, and perhaps even the only decent finale until Death in Heaven (Not sure how to feel about Big Bang)
>>
>>80804557
It's silly how Moffat goes on a big rant that viewers want to see something new and then makes the opening episode of Series 10 a Dalek episode.
>>
>>80804974
They have to use them every year. That's why.
>>
>>80804987
Then make them a cameo in some random mid season episode, not the main villain of episode 1.
>>
>>80804939
I know people who don't like Parting of the Ways, but all of them hate Last of the Time Lords. So I'm curious what your reasons are for not liking Parting?
>>
>>80804939
I think it's good, too, but I like all of the RTD finales. Maybe Doomsday's the worst, but even that's pretty good. I'm not a big fan of Death in Heaven but the Big Bang was pretty fucking great.
>>
>>80805014
Yeah it would be better. Moff probably just thinks Daleks will bring in more viewers for the first episode because he's a retard
>>
And so it came to pass on Christmas Day, that the human race did cease to exist. But even then, the Master had no concept of his role in greater events. For this was far more than humanity's end! This was the day upon which the whole of creation would change forever! This was the day... the Time Lords returned. For Gallifrey! … For victory! … For the end of Time itself!
>>
>>80805062
What do you think would have been different if "Dalek" hadn't been as good as it was or was never created?
>>
>>80805062
Or maybe he (or the BBC) thinks Daleks will bring in more viewers because they actually do bring in more viewers.

Fans may be sick of the Daleks, but casual viewers are a different story.
>>
>>80805128
Russell was originally going to use the Toclafane for the Dalek episode because he wasn't sure if they'd get the rights.
>>
>>80805031
They all have the same problem - Dalek swarm that is to be defeated by some nonsensical deus ex machina. Now I'm not saying series 3 finale's resolution wasn't far-fetched, but it was somewhere within logical realm, imagery notwithstanding.
>>
>The Parting of the Ways
Mostly GOAT. Bad deus ex machina ending.
>Doomsday
Meh. Didn't feel epic enough to be a finale.
>Last of the Timelords
GOAT aside from CGI midget doctor and deus ex machina ending.
>Journey's End
Fun schlock.
>>
>>80805128
Very little would have changed. Once RTD had the rights to use the Daleks, he was going to make them the enemy in the Time War, and finish S1 with Parting of the Ways.

If Dalek had sucked, or had fallen through, S1 would have been a little less effective, but he wouldn't have changed anything about it.

If he hadn't got the rights for the Daleks, that would have been different—Dalek would have been a similar story about a newly-invented race (the Toclafane), the Time War would have had an unspecified enemy about whom we wouldn't have heard as much, and the S1 finale would have had to be pretty different.
>>
>>80805267
There was a post by Robert Shearman himself, who outlined backup plan for the Toclafane to be the enemy in the Time War who exist as a paradoxial beings who created themselves by going back in the past and processing humanity.

RTD's deus ex machina endings don't bother me that much. At last in most of them he set things up and foreshadowed them through the last 3 episodes (or, for Parting, through most of the season), so they're stupid, and they're deus ex machina in the literal sense, but not in the narrative cheat sense. (Journey's End is the exception there.)

The need to escalate the stakes is what bothers me.

>Parting of the Ways
Not just the Doctor and his friends, but the far future of humanity are at stake. And it actually feels bigger than anything that's happened so far in NuWho. Great job.

>Doomsday
This time, it's present-day Earth. Nice escalation in theory, but it doesn't actually feel as dangerous. Possibly because of playing up Cybermen vs. Daleks instead of what either of them could do to us? I don't know, but it doesn't work.

>Time Lords
This would have been a great followup to Parting—it's present-day Earth, and we actually see it enslaved and even get a bit of the human cost (Docherty being forced to sell out in desperate hope for her family). But the story keeps shouting "bigger than ever" when it's exactly as big as Doomsday, which hurts it a bit.

>Journey's End
All of reality! And all the other ones! This is so big we just can't even show you the slightest hint of how big it is, so you'll have to trust us that you should be excited! Yawn.

>End of Time
This time, it's not just all of reality, it's all of… um… physical existence? Sorry, now it's turned into DC Comics.
>>
>>80806042
The Time War story sets up the Time Lords as equal antagonists. The Daleks still have the narrative advantage that, despite looking weird, we're intended to imagine how we could become the Daleks, while the Time Lords are meant to be like gods that we can never understand.

But the show never actually pulled off the Time Lords as gods thing—they're if anything much more recognizable than the Daleks. They're just a slightly more decadent version of the House of Lords (or Oxford). So there's really no thematic role for the Daleks to fit.
>>
>>80806452
I think it's just that during the wilderness years, the writers were forced to write around the lack of the Daleks, and they did such a good job that there's no need for Daleks in the Doctor Who universe anymore.
>>
>>80806452
>But the show never actually pulled off the Time Lords as gods thing

Agreed.

Early years alluded to them being Space gods but every time the Doctor went back the equity lessened for it.

Now they are just advanced humans with two hearts and inconsistent leadership.
