I think the movie pictured the mission of stealing the plans of the Death Star pacha-just-right.jpg. It's very convincing and the viewer buys it without arguing. The director is super mediocre. His first movie did well with critics and poorly with audience, Godzilla was widely considered mediocre and not handled well, Rogue One did well because it had the benefit of being mediocre and a Star Wars movie. It's just confirmation bias IMO.

Rogue One had no interesting or likable characters except for the villain and the robot, and everyone else's acting was super generic and melodramatic. I can't stand cheesy hyper-intensity in acting and that was basically every character.

It's a 65% movie that got a bump 'cause people wanted to like it.

Well for one it explains how that kink in the armour of the death star was found, or rather manufactured by the man who designed the very thing.

It gives insight into to the rebel alliance and how brittle it was, but even then a few brave men and women took the leap and waltzed into certain death to steal the plans to the death star.

It also further shows that the close calls we see in ep.4 is nothing compared to those that happened when the plans were extracted and brought away from the archive planet.

Little snippets also bring the story of why certain characters were at places and that.

As for you now knowing the names of the characters we can probably attest to your lousy memory.. or perhaps that the names weren't said all too often except the main characters name(Jyn Erzo).

The names aren't really all too important anyway since these were just a rag tag group who linked up and did what they had to. Not like in the SW saga where character development was key since thats what its about. The Skywalker family.

To get the signal through the shield they had to use a empire relay or something because the rebel signal was blocked by the shield.
That meant bhodi had to patch a cable into a empire ship that could bypass the rebel signal block so that they Jyn could transmit the plans from the platform.

RLM gives a poignant example of the AT-AT walkers in V. They aren't a part of the lore that Lucas calculated the empire would use, but rather an intimidating force to represent the relationship between the Rebels and Empire. Rogue One throws all that out the window and includes them for marketability. Did they have any meaning like in Ep V? No.

I really enjoyed the (second half of the) movie when it first came out. But in retrospect, I only enjoyed it because of the fan service, thanks to my nostalgia goggles. The characters were forgettable. The plot was nothing new and predictable (since we knew it would lead to ANH). The space battle, although the best one in recent memory, comes nowhere close to ROTJ level.

Basically, it's literally just fanservice-filled filler. I found it enjoyable, but it's not worth a rewatch.

I liked how things felt authentic. Storm troopers armor was dirty and worn. Compared to TFA where everything was shiny clean and looked like shit. Also that explosion when the death star shot the holy city gave me the biggest boner.
