The Payer of Promises is the real answer. Best film I ever watched for a class.
Barren Lives is excellent too--think of the Grapes of Wrath but even more desolate and soul-wrenching.
I enjoyed this one too--it's a little more uplifting than Vidas Secas and Pagador de Promessas.

Only the first one
This one is a retelling of Orpheus/Eurydice set during Carnaval in Rio. Beautifully shot and staged.
This one is a Herzog film about a rubber baron attempting to lift a steamship over a hill in order to access rubber trees--it's set during Brazil's huge rubber boom of the early 20th century.
This one is more recently-filmed than the others. It's set during the early days of Portuguese and Spanish colonization in South America and revolves around a group of missionaries trying to civilize the Guaraní natives near present-day Paraguay/Paraná. It has some great footage of Iguaçu Falls, although the movie's heavy-handed Catholic imagery might be a turn-off for some.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy these recs--I would write more about these but I'm at work and have to use a mobile to post.
I forgot this one too. I personally didn't care for its elements of magical realism but a lot of people (e.g. fans of Like Water for Chocolate) enjoy it.
