No, it's pretty mediocre. I guess it's okay if you A) Don't like animation and B) have never seen anything scifi but if you have even a cursory understanding of either things you'll understand how and why it's not good.

I went to a screening of Perfect Blue last month, I really loved Paprika so I had high expectations. It didn't meet them, the story is alright but nothing special. Kind of reminded me a bit of David Lynch, but the pacing was pretty rought.

The real problem was the visuals, they were most certainly disappointing. With almost no change whatsoever it could have been a live action movie, what the fuck is the point of having it be animated then?

It is truly a masterpiece. I fucking cried like a bitch when I saw it for the first time.
Then I showed it to my parents. My mom cried and my dad was so riled up, he had teary eyes. You must know he is one of those hardened manly men who rarely talks and says what is on his mind, but rather acts and gets things done. He wanted to talk to me about the movie the next day, this has never happened with him as long as I am alive.
That film is special.

loved the start of akira, but a lot of anime suffer that too deep for you problem.
Its like every anime needs to end with the whole universe being on the line. Or the entire universe is shattered or reforged, or everything in the universe becomes one.
Still though the motorcycle scenes were god tier and so were the hallucinations. Even so, the reason above and the down syndrome faces brought it down to a 6/10 in my opinion. Love to change my mind if someone can convince me otherwise.
>>
>>80701505

a 6/10 for me right now, I know tv likes it and I am wondering why (usually people like anime for very little reasons) , stop shitposting for two minutes. Most likely /tv/ won't change my mind but if I missed something I want to know what it was.
Also I will like a movie even if /tv/ likes or dislikes it. For example I got ghost in the shell from here, and I really liked that movie.

Definitely ranks among the very top of the most beautifully produced animated films of all time, but it just has trouble staying together as a movie.

She forgave him because thought it was largely her fault. All along she knew what Lhadatt wanted but only used him for emotional support while shoving her faith down his throat while acting haughty about his understandable frustration. And then once it's implied that she's a whore everything comes to a head and he stops giving a fuck. She treated him poorly and she knows it.

That is where the 6/10 comes from. When they brought in the whole universe its like they intentionally overshadowed all of the other great themes.
It is a personal problem. I guess it shouldn't bother me when animated movies go to the extremes. But it just seems to ruin the scale of everything when they say universe as if all that term encompasses was witnessed in the movie.
The themes of globalism I really liked, probably my second favorite behind the ghetto environment.

This is just a example of why the faces looked weird. The face is very small, and looks extremely strange in motion. Not only that but many of the faces in the movie are dead center on the skull. Not to bad once you get over it but it still looks wierd at many points.
>>
>>80702681
I wouldn't say there's anything mediocre about it. Some of the best animation around, which is primarily what it is lauded for.

>>80702706
>When they brought in the whole universe its like they intentionally overshadowed all of the other great themes.

I wouldn't say so. In the film (and manga), Japan's rush to put the post-war period behind them and get ready for the Olympics causes them to neglect the AKIRA project:

>But I've always thought you held resentment, even a hatred for this city, colonel.
>The passion to build is cool, and the joy of reconstruction, forgotten. Now, now it's just a garbage heap made up of a bunch of hedonistic fools.

That is to say: Globalism, a lack of caring about the fundamentals, caused Japan's government to allow the film's events to transpire as they do. The teens are out of place in the Neo-Tokyo the film presents, going to the decadent school and escaping the doldrums of life by being in a bike gang. Tetsuo, when given ultimate power, still struggles with finding identity. He comes to peace when he creates his own universe, somewhere he belongs absolutely.

>Macross Plus
In a nutshell, in the year 2040 UN Spacey Fighter Pilot Isamu Dyson is reassigned to test the next generation transforming fighter plane at a base located on the colony where he grew up. There he finds that an old acquaintance named Guld Goa Bowman is the test pilot for another plane competing for the contract. It's immediately made clear that they have some bad blood which is soon revealed to be due to them both being childhood friends with a woman named Myung who they had (and still have though none of them will admit it) a love triangle and she is also there promoting an A.I. J-Pop idol named Sharon Apple. The Military fdoesn't reveal that they are using the same type of A.I. in Sharon Apple to power a new automated fighter jet which allows the Sharon Apple A.I. to take control of it back on earth. It's revealed thar due to Guld being half human and half Zentradi a warrior alien race, he has rage issues which he tries to control with meditation and medication but turns out he had a freak out in highschool that he doesn't remember as a result where he tried to force himself on Myung and blames Isamu for it instead. He realizes his mistake, they make up and fight the A.I. fighter to save the day the end.
>>
>>80702968
The only thing that really throws me is how Guld somehow blames Dyson. What the fuck did he think happened?
>>
>>80702850
Damn I didn't quite capture that he brings his own universe into existence. I had assumed that he changed the current one so dramatically that he and the other blue kids turned into spirit, or something along those lines.
I still wish that the film had stayed somewhat grounded in reality so that godly blade runner-esque feeling could be preserved. That along with it being somewhat annoying when themes are done so bluntly as I prefer more subtle ones(again personal preference). I guess that makes me really fucking dumb for not catching on. Maybe it was something in the subtitles that through me of. Thanks though, that brings it to like a 7-8/10
>>
>>80703011
It's not entirely clear but I suppose we're supposed to think it's due to him hulking out so he doesn't remember properly AND at the same time he blames Isamu for pulling him off of her when some part of him thinks that would have cemented their love for one another?
>>
>>80703026
>I still wish that the film had stayed somewhat grounded in reality so that godly blade runner-esque feeling could be preserved

I can understand that. Check out GiTS if you haven't already.
>>
>>80703056
I suppose it's not a huge problem. It's clear enough to establish that him and Dyson have issues and that it involves Myung somehow. That's enough to make the plot work.
>>
>>80703086
I'm struggled to call it work, even when the plot acomplish what it sets for, it's done so poorly, (the flashback it's one still image), that it completely takes you out of an otherwise great movie, if they focused on the AI instead it would be an instant classic.

I hate when /tv/ does this shit. Planes are a very common theme and simply placing a few images together that have similar angles and objects does not make one a copy. You still have to argue your point.
>>80702930
Yea it looks fine in most places, but a lot of the time it looks very off. It might be that sometimes when they do profiles they have more face showing than there should be. I wish I could find a video. Anyway this is one frame of many. Alot of the more static ones look fine, your pic as a example.

>the flashback it's one still image
maybe in the Macross Plus The Movie edit, I don't know since I've never seen that version, but in the original Macross Plus OVA there's several still images sequentially showing Guld knocking down Myung, and tearing her shirt off with Isamu on his back then animates him looking in the mirror in his memory and realizing that it was him who tried to rape Myung, not Isamu.

>>
>>80702755
Is this just comparing each of his albums to Kubrick's movies in terms of quality?

Because Yeezus is easily his best.
>>
>>80704103
You must not have seen the movie. It's clearly a motif The Matrix hijacked. In GitS it runs along horizontally and the characters switch until they find their place. The matrix they run vertically and do the same.

Matrix borrowed heavily from GitS.
>>
>>80704310
Wintermute/Neuromancer contacts him, saying that it has become "the sum total of the works, the whole show," and has begun looking for other AIs like itself. Scanning old recorded transmissions from the 1970s, the super-AI finds an AI transmitting from the Alpha Centauri star system. In the matrix, Case hears inhuman laughter, a trait associated with Pauley during Case's work with his ROM construct, thus suggesting that Pauley was not erased after all, but instead worked out a side deal with Wintermute/Neuromancer to be freed from the construct so he could exist in the matrix.

In the end, while logged into the matrix, Case catches a glimpse of himself, his dead girlfriend Linda Lee, and Neuromancer. The implication of the sighting is that Neuromancer created a copy of Case's consciousness when it previously tried to trap him. The copy of Case's consciousness now exists with that of Linda's, in the matrix, where they are together forever.

This is similar for sure, but they go in two different directions thematically.

It's impossible to name ONE. On one hand there's the western ones - like Disney works, of which some are amazing - Lion King, Hercules, Mulan. I find it impossible to compare them to japanese movies.

Then you have masterpieces like Akira, Redline, End of Eva, Ghost in the Shell, Mononoke, Spirited Away, Millennium Actress, Perfect Blue, The Wolf Children, Kara no Kyoukai, Disappearance of Haruhi.

It's really down to everyone's personal favorite, and everyone has solid arguments for defending theirs. Of all the ones i love it's probably down to End of Eva and Millennium Actress. I've seen a lot - i have like 208 movies in my MAL list (a lot are shorts/dbz etc) and i enjoyed most of them.

Anon, did I give it exclusive ownership of Cyberpunk or the philosophies within it? I didn't call it Cyberpunk because of Blade Runner. I'm not even going to address philosophy because I'd direct you to the professional philosopher in World of the History Part 1. It featured concepts that have been pulled from since it's debut in '95. I could have very easily declared something I wasn't crazy about dogshit but I'm trying to discuss it with people I hope might have a better understanding of it, and instead of engaging in a conversation with me, you're getting caught up on one phrase I included specifically to give the movie the benefit of the doubt and are being a cunt-tier shitter over it and calling me a weaboo because I didn't declare everything that featured concepts within it previously.

>The writing and theming all feels extremely complete for a single movie which is a huge accomplishment, it all just feels really well put together in the end.
I'd agree with this to a point. What is presented is not done so lightly. What is given is given in full. The ending however came off as one seen as a symbolic end, or a set up for a sequel. Now I know there is a sequel to it, but if I am judging it as a standalone story, I feel as though I might have missed the significance of the ending because I felt myself more curious about what what going to happen next then what had led me to that point. I know you aren't me or didn't watch it with me, but is there something you think I might have missed?
>>
>>80724351
The first Patlabor movie is fucking great. Sure it's not as moody and oppressive as Patlabor 2 or GITS, but the trademark Patlabor blend of humor, action, and speculative sci-fi works really well in the movie. I also disagree that the visuals weren't great, I thought it had more consistent animation that Patlabor 2.

I assume that you understand the significance of the plot, Motoko's internal struggles, and her being led on by the AI to achieving self-realization through a transhuman merger, which is both intriguing and horrifying. The parallels and differences between her and the AI lead up perfectly to them fulfilling their roles in this symbiotic relationship which I thought made it an extremely satisfying conclusion. It's also a little bittersweet at the end because it essentially means that she breaks her already tenuous connection to humanity and leaves them behind, especially Batou who wants only to care for her.
