I think the character is a good vector for making ethical quandries more obvious. I don't like the character though. Also, in the books people followed him because his decisions were supposed to be right, or pure, or honourable or something. I suspect it is because the writers spread themselves too thin by trying to follow the pacing of the book by doing a space opera with lots of moving parts in such a time limited format. If you actually took the time to use your brain while watching the series though and thought about why some characters make some decisions instead of having it all spoon fed to you you might find some of them more interesting. There isn't really any proof that this is the case. If anything, Earthers are living in luxury at the expence of Belters, and Mars is building their colony at the expence of Belters. Ultimately, the Belters could be living decent lives if Earth was willing to stop being so selfish and always with their eyes on the future (always looking to colonize the next thing) then there would be plenty of resources to share. Mars is really just an extension of this Earther attitude, that the rest of the system should be used for their desire of seeing a terraformed Mars as fast as possible.

It is a similar dynamic to what has always been present on Earth in our own reality. Resources have never been shared well, and this has always created this false notion that we are short on resources because ______ is living in poverty. Meanwhile, ______ mines and strips their land bare for pennies on the dollar to keep others around the world living in luxury.

Holdens character is kind of based around this idea to a certain extent, and it's why he doesn't really pick any side. His family back on Earth is your classic "live off the land" type people. He no doubt was brought up being taught that the higher powers will always seek to expand their power influence at the expense of everyone else, and that if this stopped, we'd all see that there is plenty of resources and space for everyone.
