just because yuturannus had feathers doesn't mean every goddamn species in tyrannisauridae had them. theropods on the other hand were almost all exclusively feathered, even the utah raptor. also we must have a distinction between proto-feathers and the ones modern birds have.

triceratops and stegosaurus (for example), had skin much closer to that of modern rhino's or elephants. completely feather free of course.

One of the coolest birds in the world. They stomp their prey to death. x5 their body weight is forced down on a prey. They do try for the head and do get it. So lizards and snakes are it's prey. Though it'll obviously eat small mammals like rats and mice.

There is a difference between proto-feathers, as you said, and feathers for attraction. Feathers coming out the back of a Utah Raptors head isn't going to make it less dangerous or scary. They likely laid flat on their back until they were mating or fighting with rivals.

I unironically believe this. All of those dinosaur bones in museums are artificially created. The actual finds are stored in vaults away from all speculation and only "qualified" (((scientists))) are allowed to view them. Also the way they construct dinosaur skeletons from a handful of bone finds doesn't sit right with me. There is a TON of assumptions and guesswork when they create an entire dinosaur skeleton model.

People also forget that the dinosaurs we've found with proto-feathers... are not the earliest form of dinosaur either. Dinosaurs ruled the Earth for 130 odd million years. That's a Xbox Hueg amount of time to be around compared to the 100k odd years we've been around.

A Dinosaur in the Triassic was different to the Dinosaur in the Cretaceous. Attraction plumage is seen in lots of animals. It's not astonishing that dinosaurs, some of them, developed minor ones over such a colossal period of time.

Did some dinosaurs have proto-feathers? Sure. Could you argue some were completely feathered? You could (and people do). Were they all feathered? Nope. Were they feathered from the start? Nobody knows currently.

In terms of what we know of the Earths climate, feathers were pretty much unlikely to be anything more than plumage for mating reasons. Simply because feathers don't make fucking sense for creatures in a climate where it is a lot warmer, humid and more richly saturated with oxygen. Fur is much more likely than feathers and even that is a bit baffling.

End of the day, it comes down to whether they were coldblooded or warmblooded. If they were cold blooded, neither fur or feathers make sense really. Warnblooded? Possible, but this is entering different genus and that's a mine field. Unless we can confirm 100% they were warn blooded or not... Finding the switch would be useful. But that's going back too far.

Though scientists are fiddling with the DNA of chicken eggs to basically reverse engineer dinosaurs, we might have some in 50-100 years time. Sooner if people funded it. We have chickens with claws and teeth and whatever chicken's family history was, that chickens dinosaur history had scales, not fur.

>"The emus have proved that they are not so stupid as they are usually considered to be. Each mob has its leader, always an enormous black-plumed bird standing fully six-feet high, who keeps watch while his fellows busy themselves with the wheat. At the first suspicious sign, he gives the signal, and dozens of heads stretch up out of the crop. A few birds will take fright, starting a headlong stampede for the scrub, the leader always remaining until his followers have reached safety.”

>The army tried gunning them down in moving trucks, but found they couldn’t aim properly at their speedy foes. A lone victim rendered himself a nuisance all the way to the end, his corpse getting tangled up in the vehicle’s steering equipment, which caused it to veer off and destroy half a length of somebody’s fence.

>"On 8 November, it was reported that Major Meredith’s party had used 2,500 rounds of ammunition - twenty-five per cent of the allotted total - to destroy 200 emus,” says Johnson. "When one New South Wales state Labor politician enquired whether ‘a medal was to be struck for those taking part in this war’, his federal counterpart in Western Australia, responded that they should rightly go to the emus who ‘have won every round so far’.”

I believe that dinosaurs exist, but I think all the stuff we "know" about dinosaurs is probably not accurate. We literally only have their bones, how can we think we know anything about them? Like for example what if they were as intelligent as us? Just because they have teeth and certain physical attributes, does not automatically make them exactly like animals. If some species found our bones, they would probably assume we hunted like cavemen, but we don't. there is so much we don't know.
>>
>>80678072
>Giant lizards can't be cool cause they might have had feathers.
Has Jurrasic Park actually ruined people's taste?
>>
>>80693331

I think we know a lot about dinosaurs desu. Some more than others, obviously, but we've found some really good examples of a lot of species, and even some cool stuff like dinosaur skin and such. With anything prehistoric, you can say that we're lacking a clear picture. It's as true for ancient civilizations and early hominids as it is for dinosaurs. Some we know better than others, and we're learning new things all the time.

Jurassic Park got fucked and fucked us because it was made at the tail-end of the "giant lizard" thinking. They made a lot of efforts to get realistic looking dinosaurs, taking the most liberty with the velociraptors, but subsequent discoveries kind of blew them out of the water and left them hand-waving with "our dinosaurs were never meant to be real dinosaurs" about stuff like feathers and such.

If your conclusion from our evolving ideas about dinosaurs is "oh, we must not know anything really", then you're very wrong. And the fact that you think the only fossils we've found are bones, or even that you seem to think that fossils are literally bones, means that you really don't know what you're talking about and should stop trying to sound reasonable and wise.

Yes I agree with this. Children are shown dinosaurs constantly from a very young age, to get them to BELIEVE. Once they believe, the evidence doesn't matter. None of the bones anyone has ever seen in a museum or anywhere is a real fossil, they admit this.

Doesn't anyone else find it odd that no one in human history ever discovered dinosaurs until the 1800s?

Let me give you a basic gestalt

They do experiments you see, they breed generation of generation after chicken
The chickens never go outside, never see a hawk
Above them is a screen, they can have clouds above them or whatever
They can fly a triangle over the chickens, a plane, whatever, they don't give a shit
BUT you fly ONE hawk over them and they fucking run like their live depends on it, now remember, these chickens great-grandparents never even seen a hawk

Genetic memory thing like that can tear a man to shreds

The primary reason we believe that so many dinosaurs had feathers is phylogenic bracketing. We have discovered irrefutable evidence of feathers on 2 different ornithischian dinosaurs. It is highly unlikely that filamentous integument developed more than once. That means that the last common ancestor for the ornithischians and the saurischians had feather-like structures. Therefore, every dinosaur descended AT LEAST from that ancestor, also had some type of integument. The degree of the integument is obviously up for debate. Perhaps the feathers on some of the animals were like hair on elephants, very fine and very light, but they had some type of basal feather like substance, nonetheless.

As for the statement concerning why animals in warm climates would have feathers, just ask ostriches, or emus, or any other flightless bird living in a warm climate. Just because the climate was warm, does not mean that feathers become unnecessary. (Also not at any single point in the mesozoic was oxygen higher than it was today.)

Finally, whether dinosaurs were warm or cold blooded is entirely dependent on the family. Sauropods were probably cold blooded, as it would be impossible to feed a hot blooded animal of that size. Osteology studies in ceratopsians and hadrosaurs indicate a mesothermy, somewhere in between. The entire coelurosaurian clade was likely hot-blooded.

Pic Related: Just because its feathered doesn't mean its not scary.
