Are you implying Susan Bones got into Hogwarts because her mother/aunt or whatever is Director of Defense in the Ministry of Magic or something like that?

Reminder that canon Hogwarts is supposed to have ALL magical kids of Magical Britain, nevermind the population numbers that would imply.

Yes, her world-building is lovely and comfy but extremely shallow and badly thought-out.

Not only it makes no sense to have only ~40 kids per year (10 in each house) but the actual staff isn't even enough to teach them all. Let's take Flitwick for example, he teaches the most important class: Charms. Assuming all classes are shared by two Houses, and assuming he gives as much attention to all years, assuming he works about 40 hours a week (huge for a teacher), he would only have enough time to teach 40 / 7 / 2 = ~3 hours a week to each double-house-year group.

There's only 7 classes in Hogwarts, assuming all of them take as much time as humanly possible, that's only 21 hours a week for students. That's only 4 hours a day. Not mentioning that some of these classes are much less recurrent than Charms.

So your teachers work to the bone to teach all classes, and your students end up with so much free time and pretty much no one to supervise them.

It's an example of one of the dullest franchises in the history of movie franchises. Each episode following the boy Arnold having to be all like "damn, Jamie Curtis, you fuckin' fine, all sexy with your tight body and horrific androgynous monster face. I would totally have sex with you, both my character and the real me." when all he really wants to do is fuck another 16 year old in his dressing room. Like seriously imagine having to be Arnold and not only sit in that chair while Jamie Lee Curtis flaunts her disgusting body in front of you, the favorable lighting barely concealing her stretchmarks and leathery skin, and just sit there, take after take, hour after hour, while she perfected that dance.

Not only having to tolerate her monstrous fucking visage but her haughty attitude as everyone on set tells her she's STILL GOT IT and DAMN, JAMIE LEE CURTIS LOOKS LIKE THAT?? because they're not the ones who have to sit there and watch her mannish fucking gremlin face contort into types of grimaces you didn't even know existed before that day. You've been fucking nothing but a healthy diet of blondes and supermodels and later alleged rape victims for your ENTIRE CAREER coming straight out of the boonies in Austria. You've never even seen anything this fucking disgusting before.

>a-and now you swear you can taste the sweat
"No!"
That's breaking out on her dimpled stomach as she sucks it in to writhe it suggestively at you.

Smugly assured that you are enjoying the opportunity to get paid to sit there and revel in her "statuesque (for that is what she calls herself)" beauty. The beauty she worked so hard for with personal trainers in the previous months. And then the director calls for another take, and you know you could kill every single person in this room before the studio security could put you down, but you sit there and endure, because you're fucking Arnold. You're not going to lose your future political career over this. Just bear it. Hide your face and bear it.

What's the point of complaining about nepotism when actors are generally handed high-paying for being good looking anyway? If anything, getting a job through nepotism is more deserved than getting one for being attractive. At least someone in your family achieved something through their own volition.

Wouldnt all magical kids in England end up in Hogwarts? How mant kids is that? Why didn't the "wizards" just cast themselves out of the dullest franchise in the history of movie franchises? Seriously each episode following the boy wizard and his pals from Hogwarts Academy as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. The Harry Potter series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

>a-at least the books were good though

"No!" The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.

Doesn't fit. Assuming wizards reproduce the same way humans do (nevermind that they live twice longer and thus should make more kids) 10k to 20k wizards would mean 200 to 400 kids a year. There's only 40 in Hogwarts.

They get taught basic math at pre-Hogwarts schooling. Then, in later years, they have Arithmancy which is some kind of magical math.

Let's be honest, very few people, even in the real world, NEED to know trigonometry or anything more advanced to do their job. I don't think wizards would give a heck except scholars.

>>
>>80677030
>The Face Goes South
>>
>>80676846
My numbers are taken off the average birthrate of britain, which is like 2-3 kids or something. With other factors taken in, it comes of as 20 kids per year in a population of 1000. I can't tell you how I got there exactly, it's stuff I've done a long time ago.

Examples of wizard families:
Malfoy = 1 kid
Potter = 1 kid
Black = about 4-5 kids at various levels
Weasleys = 7 kids or so
Patil = 2 kids
Delacour = 2 kids

It's generally accepted that it's very inconsistent and more likely most kids in Hogwarts don't have a bro around because Rowling didn't bother thinking about that. It's not that likely that Wizards in general have less kids. Even if they did, let's say, have half as much kids as muggles, they would need to be about 4 000 to have only 40 in Hogwarts every year.
>>
>>80674973

Go see Godfather 3 and still see if you think nepotism is better than being cast for looking good. It's far more likely an attractive person can act than some relative. it's heavily implied Dumbledore molests kids in his special room.

The Harry Potter books read like a horror anthology with the right frame of reference. Voldemort wants to destroy Hogwarts (it's a brainwashing facility) besides that his motivations are never explained, he is just the evil guy, this is basically propaganda- it's obvious he, just like Grindelwald before him, wanted to reveal the nature of magic to the muggles, and liberate humanity from slavery and ignorance.

Ministry of Magic - giant socialist bureaucracy, kangaroo courts, cruel and unusual punishment with prisons worse than hell, massive media spin and constant lieing and covering up of the truth.

The Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry - divide and conquer, set the children against each other based on some fickle 15 second hat quiz (this is obviously bullshit, there is no 'mind reading' magic displayed in the series ever again). Constantly have them compete and fight amongst themselves to prepare them as adults to never cooperate or unite and always obey authority which hands down REWARDS and PUNISHMENTS in the form of point deductions. Isn't the point of going to school to get an education and not score points?

Gringotts Bank - a bank ruled by neutral if not outright hostile goblins who keep everyone's gold locked away.

The BAD GUYS - political prisoners, freedom fighters, anarchists, revolutionaries. anyone who disagrees with the status quo.

The more you look into it, the more you see what a misunderstood genius JK Rowling really is. Harry Potter might be the greatest satire of our modern era, but people are so stupid they took it literally and she probably just said fuck it, might as well go along.
>>
>>80678812

Even as a teen when I read the books, something didn't sit right with me. Being a wizard is pretty shitty.

it got nuanced towards the end, the fight was between:
>violent revolution (Voldemort)
>soft coup with nothing changing (Potter and co.)

The books were used to send a message to the collapsing world order now, explaining to them, you can take the easy way or the hard way out.
>>
>>80675716
This. Even in less lucrative fields knowing somebody can jumpstart a career. Besides, nepotism only gets your foot in the door 9/10 times. You need to be a competent worker to keep your job, and a talented one to rise through the ranks. I don't believe there's anything wrong in having connections who can bring your resume to the top of the stack. In the entertainment industry especially you need to know somebody to get an audition most of the time as well. There are hundreds of people competing for every role you audition for, and the faces eventually start blending to the casting directors. Having a friend or relative who can help you stick out is almost necessary if you aren't a Marlon Brando tier actor.

But that's what I'm saying. 2-3 kids is per couple. You can't just use that, with people getting older and breaking up and people not having kids and whatever. My point is, for a population of 1000 people, including grandpas and babies, about 20 babies are born. Thus, for 40 kids to be born each year, it would be around 2 000 people at the moment.

Look at this. This is meant to be the entire student body and all teachers.

There's maybe, MAYBE 300 people in the room.
>>
>>80676786

It's literally implied there are many more students.

That doesn't mean that the implied amount is realistic but your 10 amount is stupid.
>>
>>80681566
10 * 4 * 7 = 280
>>
>>80681566

Yeah those are the movies they are rough interpretations of the books.

Nothing in the movies is canon even if their book equivalent is.

The movies were nice to have but ultimately flawed.
>>
>>80681627
Nope, only one or two unnamed students are ever spotted, people did the research. Specifically in the bogart scene in 3rd year.

>>80681091
I explained that I don't remember the source math exactly.
>Also, in 2015 women in Britain, at the age of 45, have had on average 1.9 children
HP is set closer to 1995 than 2015. Also, ok, now what do you do with that 1.9 children figure? How do you work with that?
>>
>>80681763

Spotted your problem senpai. You're equating the movies to the books which you should never do.
>>
>>80681566
aren't they separated by years? As in each year has a different dinner time?

I'm literally talking about the books. I haven't seen the movies, senpai.

No, the students walking down the middle are all of the incoming first years.

That's literally everyone.

You can see the door in the shot, as well as the two walls on either side of the room. There's maybe six or seven feet of unaccounted for room.
>>
>>80681763

>now what do you do with that 1.9 children figure?

You use it. If you want you can round it up to 2.0 as long as you work a 5% tolerance into the resulting figures and make allowances that this is all fucking meaningless because we're talking about logical stats in a magical environment. How about that?
>>
>>80676501
That would mean there's only 280 kids in the entire school, you blathering retard. There are single shots in the movies with more students than that. The campus would be desolate for how enormous it is and how few students there are.
>>
>>80682090
the door is open, m8, there are plenty of students who might still be outside the hall walking towards your magical but alas open door
>>
>>80682158
But there isn't, the new first years are the last to arrive and we later see them all at once in the very next scene.
>>
>>80682113
Ok, so where's the correlation between population count and babies made per year? That's what I mean. That's why I work off the 20 per 1000 per year figure.

>>80682143
>movies
The books imply these numbers. I don't really care what the movies did with it. Also I doubt there really are shots with more than 280 students at once.
>>
>>80681948

I'm not trying to defend Rowling and any inconsistencies she may have created but if you can't presume that a castle sized school doesn't have multiple groups of kids rotating between courses then your autism can't be satisfied.

The only thing that i personally noticed was that the amount of teachers don't add up especially because she never even alluded to specialized courses not all students have as they get older. (AP or Honors equivalent courses).

Tl;dr just don't sperg out and fill in the holes that Rowling made with reasonable explanations
>>
>>80682329
I don't understand what you mean, with all due respect. You yourself even admit the teacher count couldn't possibly handle more than my numbers.
>>
>>80677139
I didn't believe this bullshit when I was in school and I don't believe it now.
I'm sure that when marking exams and big assignments they need to put an extra 5 or 6 hours in at home, but there's no way any of the teachers I had spent 4 hours every night meticulously planning what page to get their students to take notes from.

Yeah I'm saying that nobody is arguing that Rowling didn't fuck up multiple times but you should basically mentally fix the holes with reasonable expectations in your head. Basically use your head canon to make a better and more complete story.

I think it also helps to think that back in the good ol days of witchcraft and wizardry Hogwarts was filled to the brim but since they are "a dying breed" there aren't as many students or teachers. It also explains why there are lots of abandoned classrooms and hallways, floors.
>>
>>80682212

Don't care about that. All I was doing was pointing out some sloppy practice when dealing with official figures.

Do you think Dick Feynman would be impressed? Neither do I.

That's usually the implied background when trying to stick to canon. Most of the time people ignore canon and just fill Hogwarts with 2000 students and as many teachers as necessary, which is fine. But it's important to see the hard limits of canon, and such they are. Rowling never implied number any bigger than 10 a house, a year. That's all I'm saying.

I'm perfectly aware of the numerous way fanon filled the gaps in believe-able ways.

"some more shit", y said b-ly
"some more shitter shit" x said c-ly
And so on.

Bigger question is, what the fuck are all these adult wizards doing all day? I mean, magic takes care of almost all needs, so there needs to be very few craftsmen, no one is creating food, they don't actually "need" anything...hell, how come the weasleys are poor? Why do wizards even have the concept of wealth when you can just wave your faggy wand around and build a new house?
>>
>>80684676
>no one is creating food

That's the one thing they can't magic up, though. They can only transport food from some place they know it exists. From the pot to the plate etc.

The Weasleys are poor because they had like 50 kids, all of who needed clothing and school supplies, with neither parent being good enough at clothes spells, forcing them to buy clothes and robes as well as food.

Same as with us. Most people COULD make their own clothes, but even poor people end up buying clothes because they just don't have the skill with needle and thread.

That's true of every fictional world. Look how complicated the real world is. It couldn't possibly be reduced to 7 books, even if they were nothing but lists of facts.
>>80674973
>Not only it makes no sense to have only ~40 kids per year (10 in each house)
We know there are more than that in the books though. There are at least twenty named Gryffindors in Harry's year alone and well over 10 named Slytherins in his year as well. Each year is probably closer to 100 students total.
>but the actual staff isn't even enough to teach them all. Let's take Flitwick for example, he teaches the most important class: Charms. Assuming all classes are shared by two Houses,
The classes aren't divided by house. In the movies it seems like only Gryffindors and Slytherins have classes together, but that's just because they don't have the time and resources to make everything exactly like the books.
>and assuming he gives as much attention to all years, assuming he works about 40 hours a week (huge for a teacher), he would only have enough time to teach 40 / 7 / 2 = ~3 hours a week to each double-house-year group.
It would only be 7 classes a day per professor if the class is daily, but many of the classes are only 2 or 3 days a week and some of them are late at night(astrology classes are at midnight, for example). The classes work out in such a way that students can take WAY more than a normal student does in the real world. When Hermione had the time turner she was taking more than 20 classes a week.
>>80681566
That's just the movies though. They had to actually build the set and cast the kids. Expecting them to make the sets bigger than the studio they're inside and cast at least twice as many child extras is a bit silly. Having even a small number of children on a project is a logistical and managerial nightmare. Having ~700 would be fucking impossible.
