I know Disney says it isn't canon but Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader would make a great film. It's Vader getting used to the suit and hating it because he's hindered by it. It's a pretty cool take on it because he feels like a fucking cripple because his style of fighting was very acrobatic in many ways as Anakin and now he's a big lumbering machine. He's also pretty bummed about Padme. It does a lot in helping you understand that character.

The other characters in the book are some Jedi that survived Order 66 and that's a good story too.

I never got why they never adapted this book. Most Star Wars novels are dogshit but this one is actually a damn good story. It would work great as a film. If done right it could easily be the best Star Wars film. That level of character exploration hasn't been done in the series. It would be damn good.

The New Republic controlled the largest part of the Galaxy, the First Order controlled the rest.
Leia's group "The Resistance" only functioned in the First Order controlled parts, they were backed by the New Republic.

For example:

After the fall of the Soviet Union, it broke up in one large country and several smaller ones. Russia is the New Republic and Ukraine is the First Order. Russia backs rebels in Eastern Ukraine, called the Resistance.
The First Order responds by nuking the capital of the New Republic. e.g. Ukraine nuking Moscow.
