Jake is a better athlete to begin with because he's been bred to be that way, because of his high thighs and big thighs that go up into his back and he can jump higher and run faster because of their bigger thighs.

This goes back all the way to the Civil War when the slave owner would breed his big black to his big woman so that he could have a big black kid.

Watching TOS for the first time after having seen all other Trek.
It's refreshing to see the Prime Directive treated as a sensible guideline rather than some dogmatic pseudo-theology.

Imagine Picard threatening to blow up an entire planet inhabited by billions to save his crew and end a conflict he found silly. Or hell, ending a 10,000 year old computer-guided civilization because he felt 'freedom' was a better way to live. Picard would have probably blown up his own ship to preserve the Vaal followers' way of life

A petabyte isn't that much. Large corporations and governments have that much storage for some of their departments. NSA in particular stores many petabytes worth of data from all their internet trawling. For an Android in the 2300s it's a laughably small amount of storage capacity.

>NSA in particular stores many petabytes worth of data from all their internet trawling.

Understatement of the century.

Backblaze, a company you've probably not heard of, who does data backup has about 250 Petabytes worth of data stored.

NSA would dwarf this by a few units of power, back in 2012 the governor of Utah let slip that one of the NSA's data storage facilities would be in the first to be able to hit and store a yottabyte of data.
>>

>I mean, the Babylon 5 we got was a completely mangled version of JMS's original vision, riddles with production problems, and it still turned out a great show. The same could happen with Discovery, right?

Most of Babylon 5 production issues was about actors, budgets and PTEN falling apart. Some bigwigs at WB hated 'em, but they didn't meddle with the show directly. Micromanaging executives are the issue with STD according to all rumors.

We have more similar example with TNG and shieet that happened behind camera during first two seasons of it with Gene and his trusty lawyer. I'm not sure does Trek have enough fanbase and inertia to carry it trough over couple shitty seasons as now struggling shows are axed lot faster.

Also given their cultural briefings every Starfleet officer knew that as did half the population of Bajor, no bothered to tell her because it was a hilarious running joke.
>>
>>80650513
I was being conservative but no way can even the NSA store a yottabyte of data. That much storage would cost hundreds of billions of dollars. A yottabyte is a trillion terabytes. Lets say the US government manages to somehow get the cost per terabyte down to $0.20 that's still 200 billion dollars worth of hard drives.

Maybe it has the potential to be upgraded to store that much at some point in the future, it wouldn't even be close right now though.

There is one big difference between Datas positronic brain and NSA server farms. Size.

We are closing the physical limit how small individual transistors on chips can be made as we speak. Moore's law is starting to become obsolete.

In early 2000's 32 bit processors were becoming hot as fuck with ever increasing clock speeds, 64 bit processors allowed same computing power with less actual power consumption and heat. Before 64 bit processors went same route as 32 bit ones software side solved issues with it had earlier with parallel processing and we got bailed out of it. Modern supercomputers are good example of that parallel processing on massive scale. Those aren't like super computers of 80's or early 90's. Those are literally cheapest and most reliable chips, possibly bit obsolete and issue free processors... just in massively parallel setups.

Local university had the fastest super computer in the world outside of US military industrial complex or NSA for few months in early 90's. Decade later desktop PCs were roughly in same ballpark when it comes raw performance. FLOPS, amount of RAM, hard drive space and so on. Fast forward another decade... smart phones were on same level. In two decades computing power of house sized supercomputer costing ten million or so ended up in pocket with low three digit price tag.

Call: 23:38 - Maintenance (non-emergency)
Complainant: Computer Dispatch

Report: This was a good one. I get a computer pop-up on my console telling me to report to acting Ensign Wesley Crusher's room in his mother's suite. It's flagged non-urgent so I take care of some other crap and then make my way down. Commander Crusher is sitting on her sofa in tears and there is a medical team and an engineering team already down there. Turns out Wesley decided he wanted a "giant rubber vagina" (direct quote from Lt. Barclay) and it came out of the replicator a bit more suddenly than Wesley had expected. One end of the thing got wedged in the replicator slot and the other end ballooned out of the replicator and pinned him to the floor of his room. The engineering team had to set their phasers to shame to get him out of that predicament. Unfortunately, by the time I showed up, he was long gone and there were just pieces of rubber left in the replicator that needed some work.

I'll never let that little prick live this one down.

Status:Hilarious.

This does not simply handwave away the fact that the transporter cloned Riker.
>>
>>80674418
Without that atmospheric anomaly, the transporter is incapable of creating Thomas. Thus, the atmospheric anomaly gets the credit, not the transporter.
>>
>>80674552
Hey bitch
>After examining the transporter logs, Geordi La Forge informs the crew that apparently there was a massive energy surge in the distortion field around the planet just at the moment Riker tried to beam out. The transporter chief at that time tried to compensate by initiating a second containment beam. However, Commander Riker's pattern maintained its integrity by just the one containment beam. And even though the second beam was shut down, somehow it was reflected back to the surface, and another William Riker materialized there. The containment beam must have had the exact same phase differential as the distortion field – hence the two identical Rikers – they both rematerialized from a complete pattern and are identical.

The transporter cloned him. It kills you and reconstructs you from your pattern every time.
>>
>>80674798
>The containment beam must have had the exact same phase differential as the distortion field – hence the two identical Rikers – they both rematerialized from a complete pattern and are identical.
No distortion field == No Thomas
>>
>>80674846
>they both rematerialized from a complete pattern
Do you realize what this means? It means the transporter assembles your pattern out of the available molecules it has and reconstructs you. It doesn't take your molecules and move them somewhere.

Each containment beam has the ability to create a person from their pattern. You need more molecules than there are in one person to do that.
>>
>>80674997
>It doesn't take your molecules and move them somewhere.
Yes it does. But the distortion duplicated the molecules.

>Each containment beam has the ability to create a person from their pattern. You need more molecules than there are in one person to do that.
The number of containment beams has no effect on the number of materializations. Two containment beams was still going to materialize only one Riker, until the distortion duplicated him.

Captain, we're out of episode ideas for a show that involves being in the largest and most imaginative setting conceivably possible. Suggest order?

Yes. Send the crew to the holodeck and have them pretend to be detectives from the 1940s.

If you're already unhinged and pro-Nazi, then it might.
Actually effective "neo-Nazi" propaganda conflates the patriotic/anti-communist sacrifices of the apolitical/non-Nazi right wing in Germany with Nazi ideology/mysticism, just like the original Nazis did to win new recruits.

>>
>>80663133
I'm not saying I liked that episode. Why are you thinking that everyone who dislikes your pet episode likes ALL the other episodes?

Besides, even if we accepted that the science-fiction in Sub Rosa is acceptable within Trek's universe, there are plenty of reasons for it to be declared bad as an episode of the show, namely the fact that it's basically the plot, tone, etc of a Twilight-esque romance novel hijacking a science-fiction show.

The quality of an episode is dependent upon its execution, not the idea behind it.

Having an idea that's """quintessential""" Star Trek doesn't make up for having poor writing, poor directing or poor acting.
>>
>>80677031
That's not true at all, the idea counts for at least part of it.

I just got done watching DS9's Past Tense 2 parter, and the execution is sometimes kind of hokey, but the idea is so good it carries it through at makes it very poignant to what we're dealing with right now (increased automation and technology leaving large classes of workers without work)

Most people disagree and rate episodes based on their execution, not their idea.

See, if you would just say "I see things differently" then everybody could accept it and move on.

It's when you say "if you don't see things like I do then you don't like Star Trek" that you get called out as the baiting troll that you are.

>>
>>80677031
Dude, under what rock have you been living under where a star trek episode doesn't have poor acting from at least one regular cast member??

TOS: Shatner (everyone really)
TNG: I love Gates McFadden, but she's just a nice mom on a Hollywood TV show. She can't act her way out of a wet paper bag.
DS9: Pretty much everyone except Quark in the first season, most of them get better but Terry Ferrell is pretty terrible throughout.
VOY: Everyone except the Doc and Neelix
ENT: Hmm, just about everyone aside from Scott Bakula

>because those two episodes are quintessential Star Trek
From a certain point of view, perhaps. I'll admit, I like the "noblebright" Lovecraftian elements of Star Trek (TOS especially), but generally only when they're done right, and doesn't cross over into saccharine cliched fantasy tropes, whose only shield is Clarke's Third Law.
>myths and legends were real!
>wooooo, 2spooky!
>they're actually just natural phenomena too advanced to understand though, so it's technically sci-fi though guys!

For me, though, the part I think Star Trek does best and is more original in doing is stuff like the famous Gorn episode, or the interactions with the Klingons, Borg, Ferengi, Cardassians, etc; it's about reaching understanding with fellow sentients and reaching an understanding with both the future and the unencountered phenomena in the universe and making the universe less spooky than it was before you encountered it, not "oh it was a space ghost best leave it alone because we can never hope to understand it, and to prevent it from infecting other old crones with its unknowable witchly powers".
>>

>>
>>80677430
If this is true then I apologize for calling you a baiting troll.

The idea does indeed count for "part of it", but I think most people weigh the execution much more heavily when reviewing an episode. I base this opinion on a simple look over all the Star Trek reviewers out there. Focusing on the idea to the exclusion of the execution is an unusual occurrence, not the norm.
>>
>>80677618
If you could give me at least one episode with a 10/10 premise/idea for the story but a terrible execution that's rated badly I'd be inclined to believe you, but just looking over the lowest rated episodes, the vast majority of them are stupid fanservice like Lwaxana episodes, or just lazy like Shades of Gray.

Sub Rosa has a really stupid premise and is totally garbage.
>>
>>80677354
Are you obsessed with DS9? Nobody is talking about it except for you.

Even people who worked on Sub Rosa don't like it.

>If you could give me at least one episode with a 10/10 premise/idea for the story but a terrible execution that's rated badly I'd be inclined to believe you,
This is literally the basis for the fandom's split on The Motion Picture.

Even if you personally love it, most of the fandom doesn't (hence the "odd movies are bad, even movies are good" meme).
>>
>>80677376
It may have helped that Quark was written as a slimy, faux-emotional Ferengi businessman, rather than a stoic, upstanding, "muh Vulcan logic" Starfleet type.
I thought Dax was alright, when there was awkward delivery it kind of gelled well with the idea that this woman was actually a centuries-old parasite, it might not care for social graces or remember how to speak with consistent diction in its newest host.
One actor I've never liked is Miles O'Brien's actor. Guy's wooden and insincere as hell. It also doesn't help that the way he's written is indistinguishible from an American's mannerisms and subtle Americanisms (eg: "honey") sound unnatural in an Irish accent (which is in itself often an extra put-on for actors, even native ones, who have to try not to drift towards the accents of their colleagues).

Daily reminder that Enterprise was the very best Star Trek series ever produced.

It was Star Trek done right.

No faggots
No feminism
No PC
Less technobabble
More realism
More character
Interesting aliens
Solid storytelling

Trektards hate it because it isn't gay enough.
