What happened to distinctive movue soundtracks?
It's cheaper and easier to make generic soundtracks that are little more than recycled versions of older themes. It's become especially popular this decade, just look at Star Wars 7 and The Dark Knight Rises.

But with merchandise being so important, wouldn't it be better for branding?
It doesn't have to be a John Williams pricetag, either. There are plenty of struggling musicians who can string together a nice leitmotif

Have you considered movies typically have bland soundtracks and the best, most original ones just stand out?
You link a picture to Star Wars which is like one of the greatest movie scores ever made. Is every score supposed to be as amazing as Star Wars?

While not necessarily having the musical worth of something by Morricone, just about any blockbuster between 1970 and 2000 had a distinctive theme that you could whistle to someone to have them instantly recognise it. Even in 2003, PotC had its famous theme.
On the other hand, can you honestly think of the Avatar theme right now? In fact, look at any of the top grossing movies: the only ones I can recall the themes to are the ones where it was released or written by the early 2000s. Star Wars, Titanic, Harry Potter. The only notable exception is Frozen.

I always found Superman more similar to Star Wars. But all 3 are fantastic.

The first Transformers movie did it right. No idea about the later ones.

Yep. BTTF wasn't John Williams. Or Gremlins. Short Circuit had some good stuff. Then there's the darker movie scores like Escape from NY, Aliens,Terminator...
Modern scores don't even begin to compete.
