This.
Eyes Wide Shut becomes distressing, looming, then dreadful and at the end pure fucking terrifying in that order the moment Tom enters the room with Shekelgoldberstein and the drugged girl. It deteriorates every minute after that.

I disagree. While a fantastic scene, it somehow loses it's creepiness after repeated viewings. The lake scene is still terrifying even after multiple rewatches.

>>80582142
He does an amazing job setting up the scene. The scene is towards the beginning of the movie. Lynch starts telling this story that seems kinda weird, the characters seem slightly off, and you're not really sure where this is going. All of a sudden he cuts away from this story to show this scene with these new characters you've never seen before. It's almost like a movie within a movie. You're trying to figure out what the fuck is going on and then BAM the face appears. It's a perfectly crafted scene.

Man in the tuxedo is a past owner of the hotel who has a young male lover. He tells the young man he'll have sex with him if he shows up to the hotels ball wearing a dog costume so the millionaire guests can degrade him. Kubrick changed it to a bear costume for some reason

>>
>>80583190

The dramatic zoom-ins on all the shit in the beginning of the movie was so hamfisted. LOOK AT THIS! THIS IS GONNA BE IMPORTANT LATER! FORESHADOWING! I was fucking choking on it. Nobody could act worth a damn except Lang, who was okay. Rocky's dialogue was terrible across the board, especially her monologue about the ladybug tattoo that served to do nothing but, again, clumsily foreshadow something. We already saw how bad her home life was and why she needed to steal and escape, but it tells you again like five times. Meanwhile the security system kid was horribly underdeveloped, his relationship with his dad could have been a major thing (since he was abusing his dad's access to the security systems to rob people) but nope, he's bland. I hear he got more fleshed out in a few deleted scenes, though. I also felt like the blind man was severely underutilized, the cat-and-mouse game should have taken a lot more advantage of off-screen space; maybe a long tracking shot following Rocky could have forced her (and the viewer) to imagine a mental map of where the old man is moving in the house. You could have gotten good shots of the blind man silently coming up behind them, his arm outstretched, and neither he nor the thieves know he's there. More suspenseful shit like that. But the only good scene is the one in the blackout basement. Speaking of, the whole twist was ridiculous. How does a blind man kidnap someone? How would he not be the prime suspect in her disappearance? And above all else it's just too gross to be scary, or even funny. It's shock that fails to shock and I felt like it was only part of the movie because Alvarez needed it to be another half-hour long. The ending is bullshit, too. Fuck sequel hooks. And overall it leaned WAY too heavily on repetitive fakeouts.

The dog was the best character. Whenever it had written itself into a corner, the dog was there to save the day, and I lost my shit laughing when the dog crawled into the vents.
>>
>>80583508
>>80583652

I have to disagree with you. The original TCM still works for me and is better than all the modern ramakes and whatnot BECAUSE it is so grounded and simplistic that makes it so fucking terrifying.
This is how I imagine a bunch of inbred, deranged fuckheads in the middle of uncivilized nowhere to be. Be it in America or Russia. It doesn't make a difference. There is no highly styleized MTV music clip Michael Bay aesthetic to it where you show the killings in perfectly lit John Wick choreography.
This has the rusticality of a shithouse in a sun burned, open field with hundreds of miles away from civilization. That's why it is to this day one of the most terryfing horror movies imo. It has a feel to it that no other has ever been able to capture.

The phone calls were creepy, but this scene was so unexpected because the movie didn't have any other jumpscares

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8YIW7No1l4
>>
to be honest I don't think any horror movies would be scary without either well executed jumpscares, or playing off the expectation of a jumpscare. If you went into a movie with 100% assurance that there'd be no jumpscares there'd be no real bite behind the atmosphere. The best you could hope for is a slow torture scene.
>>
>>80589325
In fact the movie had many brilliant things about it, to name a few - intro with depressing broadcasts, eerie droning soundtrack, scenes in the house, Leatherface himself. The whole mood and atmosphere were perfectly fucked up, but you gotta admit that the actual scares weren't really effective (especially the one with the corpse in refrigerator - I mean, come the fuck on).

But I have to agree that the raw documentary-style montage is what makes up for all the disadvantages.

I know Lynch can make beautiful looking films, and he's a pro at what he does, but this looks so awful. It's like a student film project Probably by necessity or intention, but it really distracts me.

It might not be fair because I watched this when I was 8 years old but this is the most scared I have ever been in my life. I was fucking inconsolable. I genuinely felt like I was in danger of being scared to death, my heart didn't stop racing for what felt like hours.

i saw Alien for the first time at that age, was so scared i was afraid of the dark until i rewatched it 6 years later, was always afraid of one of them facehuggers crawling from beneath the bed to attack me while i slept

This is literally my experience with The Ring, but the whole movie is like that for me. I still think it's a very good horror film.
