If I could take a tall one in with me to watch a movie I might go more often.

Movie theaters are not about seeing a movie, its about having an experience.
>>
>>80566945

Netflix's primary innovation was its movie streaming service. You're probably too young to remember, but before Netflix started their streaming service there literally just wasn't such a thing. They pretty much invented on-demand online streaming of movies and TV shows, as well as the concept of releasing an entire season of a show at once; before Netflix did that all the competing streaming services like Hulu still stuck to weekly release schedules, even for online-only shows.

tl;dr - Netflix literally invented everything you're accustomed to with relation to watching movies and TV shows online. That's their innovation.

It's not worth is it. If they catch you on the infrared camerasdrinking, they ban you from the theater. And if you're stupid enough to come back and be caught, security takes you out back and beats you with batons.

You can do a search near you.
>>
>>80568113
>Streaming services started with cable companies.

Cable companies may have started On Demand first, but even today that shit has pretty low selection on a rotation. You can only watch the handful of movies that are currently available and they aren't available forever, and when it comes to TV shows they only keep up a few episodes at a time and not full seasons, unless it's something really old.

Netflix started online streaming and the idea of having a large selection that doesn't change or rotate so you really can watch whatever, whenever.

Cable On Demand services are nothing like that, and certainly weren't remotely close 10 years ago when Netflix started their streaming service. I'll grant you that On Demand services have improved in recent years, but that was in response to Netflix outshining them in price and convenience.
>>
>>80567960
Good God, no.

You know that AOL / Time Warner merger was all about video on demand before the high-bandwidth infrastructure was in place?

>>

So they're presently not doing so great. But the question was "What was Netflix's innovation?" The fact that their catalog recently shrunk and currently sucks doesn't diminish their innovation.

>>80568435

I didn't say they invented streaming. I said they invented everything about what's considered standard in paid online streaming services. Obviously they didn't invent the technology or concept of streaming itself, but the idea of having a huge catalog of things to pick from that ideally do not come and go on any kind of rotations (recently they've clearly been having issues with their catalog as mentioned above) and the idea of releasing a full season of a TV show on day 1 were all innovations created by Netflix's successful business model.

think of it like VR but not needing the headset. There is are 3 screens in front of you, a screen below you, a screen above you, and screen on either side of you. Here is a link that shows a few pics of what it looks like: https://www.dezeen.com/2012/05/25/seven-screen-pavilion-by-oma-for-kanye-west/

> I was very particular about having the screens separate, where your mind puts the screens back together, the way you put memories together. I'm not the best director in the world, but I had an idea that I thought would be amazing to inspire people, like a dream of one day this being the way people watch movies. You know, Tarantino doing a movie like this or a horror movie like this, animation, 3-D ... in this form that surrounds you. People want to go back and see it more and more because they missed something to their left or to their right, and it feels more like the experience of life

I would agree except theaters as they exist today are degraded versions of what they used to be.

We actually need to march backwards for a bit.

Bring back intermissions for movies longer than 90 minutes.

Work with movie studios to place a good pause point somewhere in the middle of the movie, give people 10 minutes to shit, piss, and talk about the movie so far.

There needs to be at least a dozen brown shirts standing at the aisles who will drag people out and beat them into submission for talking or using their cell phones. If you have to get up and use the restroom then you have to pay triple to get back in, and even then you're forced to sit in a designated back aisle so you're not walking in front of people. Sharpened spikes should adorn the backs of every seat so you can't kick the people in front of you. If you're still managing to do this without sustaining injury, the spikes will shoot out and impale you to your own seat. However, these will retract on unoccupied seats once the film has begun. Even once the film is over, you're not out of the woods yet fuckers. All admitted falcons are specially trained to hone in and claw out the eyes of those who clap.

The theatre should be a harrowing, life threatening experience that you remember for all time. If you can't handle acting like a respectable adult for two hours then you're out of the gene pool forever. Film, and indeed the future of mankind will benefit from these innovations.

movie theaters are feeling threatened and want to undercut netflix

netflix did that deal with that small theater chain that amounts only to their movies being available for academy award nomination

netflix "fires shots" to justify its actions and push back against angry theaters.

so what do you think: should movies be released in theaters only and then released on other platforms or should movies ve released for home viewing simultaneously with theater releases?
>>
>>80582332
It's entirely up to the producers of the films how to release the movies. It shouldn't be about protecting some existing business model, that's not really their problem or Netflix's problem.

>>
>>80582523
But it's not innovation. Innovation implies creating something new. Taking something illegal and monetizing it has nothing to do with innovation.

You cannot argue that Netflix is innovative when all it did was make a business model out of illegal streaming sites. And even before then, it's rental service was nothing new either.

And besides, Netflix wasn't even the first legal paid streaming site. It was beaten to the punch by services like Hulu and fucking Apple TV.

The only reason Netflix is so popular and successful nowadays is because of their aggressive viral marketing campaigns (i.e. "netflix and chill", astro-turfing, planted reviews, etc)
>>
Most movie theaters (at least here) have upgraded their picture and sound quite a bit in the last few years. The only real "innovation" has been 3D which most people don't like and you have to pay 5 extra bucks for. And now you can't see almost anything in IMAX unless you put on those stupid glasses. So yeah, fuck movie theaters, though I still go sometimes.

The same with shows. To test it out I tried searching for ten different shows and of those ten they only had two available to stream. Nice fucking catalog you got there.
>>
>>80582916

>>
>>80582968

>It was beaten to the punch by services like Hulu and fucking Apple TV.

Apple TV was originally a device that synced offline content purchased from iTunes from your Mac computer or Windows PC. They didn't introduce streaming until 2010, which was 3 years after Netflix started their streaming service.

Hulu didn't start beta testing until the end of 2007, which was months after Netflix had begun their streaming service. And it didn't launch to the public until a little over a year after Netflix's streaming service. And even then Hulu had ads and was pretty shit compared to Netflix. They didn't get popular until they started adopting more Netflix-like qualities (go fucking figure, right?).

So no, those services didn't beat Netflix to the punch. Face it, Netflix was the primary innovator in the space. You may not like the service, but you can't deny their innovations.

Just look at 4D movies at any amusement park. I remember when I was young seeing a pirate flick at Cedar point. IMAX came out in the 80s. The only real "innovation" to it was in 2008 when they expanded their brand to include much smaller screens (about 1/4 the size of a real IMAX) and brand them all the same, so they could put IMAX everywhere and charge more for it.

Don't get me wrong, I like the bigger screens, but that combined with the fact that they force all the companies to make everything in 3D so they can charge even more pisses me off.
