NETFLIX changing user review system after Amy Schumer bashing.

>After years of allowing customers to rank movies on a scale of 1-to-5 stars, the streaming service announced plans to replace that system with a binary “thumbs up vs. thumbs down” rating. Soon one-star ratings will cease to be a thing on Netflix

Wouldn't be surprised, they already got rid of the 'not interested' button so you can't make things go away if you don't want to have them suggested anymore. Not like it's a service I'm paying for that i should be able to have the slightest control over

Netflix has more accurate ratings than Neilson.

Different, but not necessarily better. It certainly skews younger, so probably a more accurate stab at how the average anon will perceive it. Nielsen makes a pretty concerted effort to get its demographics accurate to the population.

Why? I thought the rating system on Netflix changed a while back and isn't based on overall consensus but on your ratings from the past and Netflix offering you suggestions of what you'd like.

Or have they changed it AGAIN? I'm very confused at this point.
>>
>>80510803
You retards

Netflix rankings are individualized. The star system is based on an algorithm that looks at what you watch and how you rank shows, and ranks similar shows accordingly. The rankings that YOU see are completely different from the rankings that other people see.

>>
>>80512643

Same shit happened with Youtube.

It's only going to damage the system they have in place. It's meant to recommend things to individual customers.

Instead of having some shows or movies that show say 3/5 stars it's just going to have a big thing that say's "you're not going to like this shit" even though I might actually like it to some degree.
>>
>>80512716
How am I backpedalling? I said from the beginning that its ratings would skew younger while Nielsens would better reflect a more balanced demographic.
>>
>>80512673
This. There has been tons of content on Netflix that has received nothing but bad reviews, but once it's a fat hog squeezing herself into a too-small leather outfit and talking about how it makes her feel "strong and powerful" god forbid people don't find it endearing and the greatest special since Eddie Murphyy's Raw! The SJW cucks at Netflix are sticking up for the fat bitch by doing this.
>>
>>80512437
The general population doesn't all have Netflix, you mongoloid. What matters is the paying Netflix customers and what THEY watch/rate.
>>
>>80512839
Uh, yeah, exactly. So why would we generalize Netflix's ratings as more accurate than Nielsen's?
>>
>>80512384
Why, what's wrong with you?
>>
>>80512794

It's just going to polarize things that much more. At least before I could watch something and it kind of gives you an idea that "hey I might like that somewhat." I've given plenty of 3/5 stars and 4/5 stars.

Thumbs up/thumbs down is not a very good system and doesn't recommend things well at all in this day and age of exactly what's in the OP. Way to fuck your perfectly good system.
>>
>>80512923
I don't conform to the "let's disconnect Netflix cause we get triggered by idiots" meme that's so popular these days.
>>
>>80512881
>why would we generalize Netflix's ratings as more accurate than Nielsen's?
Because Netflix measures a very specific group and Neilson only guesses based on a broad sample of people.
>>
>>80513249
So it's a more accurate measure for that group of people, but not more accurate in general. Which is what I've been saying.
>>
>>80510803
Netflix should have done this a long time ago for their own sake.
They want to obfuscate their low quality content.

Not everything can be amazing. Original shows and all the stand up specials, there are going to be duds.
This is straight up bad publicity that Schumers special is bad for business.
Before even watching it, its given people who havent watched it yet an expectation that its going to be shit.

Netflix going in favor of less volume of outside content for higher quality original content, its really bad for viewers to think "Wow that was shit" after watching a Netflix original.
If news hadnt broke about the ratings, there would have inevitably been some people who thought to themselves that it was simply "meh" instead of following along with the "its shit" crowd.

What if another one or two specials coming from any of the comedians are equally bad?
Without a star rating and just the thumbs up thumbs down, it looks much better on paper.

You dont want people to start looking down on your original content for any reason.
Nipping it in the bud

>>80513380
Extrapolation of data is not an accurate system in comparison to direct receipt of data. There's no refuting this.
>>
Let's be honest, everybody rates either 1 star or 5 star anyway. It's why youtube switched their systems years ago.
>>
>>80513505

>>
>>80513638

It's still a shit idea but as >>80513301 stated it was in their best interests anyway.

Very, very few of Netflix's actual original programming is any good at all.

Most of the good of the "original" programming is bought off of others. I'm getting into Peaky Blinders now coming off of Taboo but it's still BBC that made it. Same thing with Trailer Park Boys. Same thing with Arrested Development. Same thing with Portlandia.

The only thing that's original from them that I liked as House of Cards and Narcos. That's it.
>>
>>80513803
Literally just have friends
>>
>>80512630
Just like the President then?
>>
The productions that become netflix exclusives give up all back end. There was a hollywood reporter's roundtable about it. That means netflix has to pay the creators all upfront.

>let's say you have a great series that will have home media and syndication sales
You would not sign with netflix, as you have the confidence that you will gain long tail revenue

>let's say you know your product is shit, or it will have a hard time staying on the air
Then you go to netflix. Adam Sandler (4 flicks for ~$250 million) is the prime example of this. Marvel is doing the netflix thing since disney still gets to keep the theatrical movie rights to the character. And disney knows that iron fist would not hold an audience necessary to stay on network.

So, due to the business model, netflix will have either shit, or shows that will plateau with a very small audience.
>>
>>80513972
That actually explains a lot of the narrative differences in netflix originals. Are they giving up the entire IP, do you know? Merchandising and all?
>>
>>80510803
Why don't they just do what imdb has been doing for years? 1 and 10 star reviews are weighted less.

>>
>>80514066
No, Disney keeps all the IP and merchandising rights. All netflix gets is the permanent airing rights to the show and home media (which they will never release, they want a monopoly on how you watch that particular show).

This is only if they are producing a show, they license shows all the time for a set amount of time (that's why shows stop being available on netflix, as they simply no longer wish to pay for the license).
>>
>>80514269
>heh I better post in the thread just to make sure people know that!
That's, the point. OP posed a question and I answered it. Stop being so sensitive.

I don't care that netfilx is changing its rating system. I normally don't consider the opinions of people I don't know when selecting content to watch. I don't care about rating systems or "critics".

>>
I'm actually a pretty big fan of Amy but this wasn't one of her better stand ups. Still didn't deserve all the 1 star ratings though, I think it was about a 3 star special honestly.
>>
i've had thumbs up/down ratings on mine for months.

wouldn't it be boring if it was just a coincidence, since (duh) Amy's not the first one to be trolled. look at Chelsea Handler's uganda special ratings. i gave it a shit rating too, but there are trolls that didnt watch it, that are just saying how they hate her, not referencing the show at all. it's so easy to tell because they're not educated writers and are obvious hacks who imitate each other, repeating the same shit over-in-over.

and since you didn't bother to read the article (theorizing on no information is fun!), it wasn't because of Amy at all. she's small potatoes compared to their other content. she's not even in the title of the article.

like I said, I've had thumbs up/down for months and months. i'm sure other people have too. i was probably picked as one of the testing accounts.

probably you guys dont even have netflix.

just inverted snowflakes feigning rage.

lol, the internet tuff guys strike out again.

and, in the end, what is the whole change? instead of 1-5 ratings, it's a binary yes-no rating. a range change of five down to two. oh, the humanity.
>>
>>80514424
Since you didn't read the article, here's an argument that you didn't want.

>Yellin also noted that the review system has been less important over the years as the company has found users will often rank respected documentaries with five stars and more frivolous titles with one star despite being far more likely to actually watch the latter. (It’s true; many popular guilty-pleasure favorites like Armageddon are saddled with one-star averages despite having plenty of fans).

4chan is basically illiterate. they just trade in memes.

>the star system doesnt exist in our world anymore
>>
>>80512258
Actually I think this anon is right and that is literally how it used to work and how they told everyone they did it but I think they secretly, subtly changed it in the background to be a userbase rating system probably because the AI was making your choices too narrow banded and causing people to skip almost everything and then complain there was nothing good.

Like I remember going through this quiz of what movies I liked and then legit seeing movie classics have 2 stars because they were musicals for women from 1940 or something.

Now those same movies are 4.2 stars and whatever.
>>
the star system is and was fucking retarded anyway.

I know no one cares because of Schumer or whatever but they've been trying to change the rating system since early 2016

Don’t you see the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed will be expresses in exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten.

…every year, fewer and fewer words, and the range of consciousness always a little smaller…
>>
>>80523497
Dont worry this retarded system will break soon
>>
The executive said Netflix tested the new system last year and found that users volunteered 200 percent more ratings when faced with a simple up or down choice than when having five options — so the system will result in more feedback from viewers

Still, it’s hard not to feel like the new method gives users less information — a four-star average feels rather different than five-star average even though both would receive the same thumbs up.

To help compensate for the gradient loss, a Netflix spokesperson tells EW the company is also adding a percentage match score that’s based on compatibility — instead of a score based on movie’s quality via reviews: “For example, if you see a title has a 90 percent match, that means that based on your viewing habits and patterns, we think you are highly likely to enjoy that title.”

and we all know that guilty-pleasures are garbage even if we enjoy them..like junk food, thai ladyboys, heroin etc...and thus deserve their one star rating. We all like Star Wars but we all know that shit never deserved Best Picture

We're not going to base the rating of a movie on the truth...we're going to base it on the perception of the truth that we want you to see.

Rating system doesn't really work anyway.
Your rating is already minuscule when tallied, so people will vote max 1 star or max 5 star always.

The amount of stars doesn't matter, what we really need to know is, do people like it or not? Thumbs up and down is superior.
>>
I recall youtube doing the same thing and the website immediately became shit afterwards.
>>
Ask yourself, who in Netflix is responsible for this and what do they gain from it? You all know the problem but you never follow the money and on the rare occasions you find the culprit you never do anything about it.
>>
I always thought the rating system was based on content you had already watched and that 5 stars meant it would be something you'd watch.

my girlfriend watched this, without knowledge of the backlash, she just watched it because she thoought Trainwreck was funny, and she told me she turned it off 20 minutes in because of how unfunny it was.

I love how they're trying to paint this as "alt-right trolls sabotage Amys special" when in reality, it's just a horrible unfunny, joke stealing "DUDE, MY VAGINA!" show.

>She said the trolling actually reminds her that she is "powerful and dangerous and brave," and that's why she's being targeted.
