The problem with adapting animation to live action is typically the fact that live action is largely limited to things that can actually happen in real. Whereas the entire allure of animation is that ANYTHING can happen, you just have to be able to draw it. Scarlett Johansson isn't going to be able to rip her arms off trying to pry open a tank hatch the way the original Major does in the original iconic scene. She's not going to be able to perform crazy toribash-style ball joint doll martial arts moves because she doesn't have a fucking cybernetic prosthetic body. She's going to do the same shitty tae bo jump cut kick boxing she does in every movie. She's going to do the exact same kind of badly choreographed shit she did as black widow.

That's just the action. The action is going to be shit compared to the original, but GitS was never about action, the action was just to draw you in and add some excitement. It's always been about droning, long-winded philosophical exposition. The nature of identity, the nature of humanity, the nature of AI, the self vs the other, etc etc. Of course that's all going to be gutted too. This live action adaptation will be written and marketed as an action movie and any resemblance to the source will be minor. Basically, the substance of the original will be gone, and most of the flash will be gone too. No plot, shit action, all-around an inferior copy.

We're not talking about anime, we're talking about live action films. And he's right. Korean live action cinema, for whatever reason, far outranks most Japanese live action cinema. The production quality is much better, the direction is better, the cinematography is better, often the acting is better, too. Korean cinema is just miles ahead of Japanese cinema.

I haven't seen the original GitS or it's sequel, Innocence, for over a decade, so I bought them since Wal-mart was selling them and also picked up GITS:The New Movie.

I appreciate the first two more now than I did when I was younger and enjoy the philosophical/existential aspects of them now that I'm older. I really wish Mamoru Oshii could have made a third film for the 20th anniversary.

The New Movie was reasonably well made and entertaining but it lacked the sort of dreamlike atmosphere and visceral gore Oshii brought to his films.

I was never against a GITS live action film but I don't have high expectations. It's ironic that the Director seems to be the best thing going for it since the movie looks great with excellent cinematography and production design.

My problems is with Scar-jo who is a fuck awful actress and whose nose seems FUCKING HUGE in this movie for some reason while it never bothered me before. I don't give a shit about the ethnicity of the Major but if I had my choice I would have hired Sonoya Mizuno (Ex Machina, pic related) to play her since she's hot as fuck and not shy about nudity.

Which brings me to my second issue and that's the PG-13 rating which will water this down to Robocop 2014 levels of bland sci-fi garbage.

Finally, the screenwriters are hacks and leave me with the impression that they're simply cherry picking various things from the anime's that were popular and not bringing anything to this production.

I'm going to see it but my expectations are rock bottom. I'm honestly looking more forward to seeing Power Rangers and I'm not even a fan of that show/concept.

I wish they had the balls to hire someone like Paul Verhoven, David Cronenberg or, my personal favorite choice, Gaspar (Enter the Void) Noe to Direct this!

I know for a fact that they ran out of budget when filming the mid-film action sequence where Major is captured. She goes from slaughtering a bunch of mooks to walking into a room, then next scene is her on a gurney. There wasn't enough money left to finish the scene and the transition, so it just cuts off.
