The original is too slowly paced. Even the climactic tank scene has a rhythm of tense silence with brief bursts of gunfire.

The plot also deliberately avoids any kind of black and white morality. Even though they're the protagonists, Section 9 might as well be the secret police. It purposefully presents the not-too-far future as alien and uncertain.

They're aiming at a wide demographic so all of the above has to be scrapped in favor of something simpler.

It's pretty funny that the marketing is backfiring, considering that its sort of like something a hacker, or character in the TV show would do. It makes Hollywood look dumb for trying to resell an anime. They should have known their audience would get mad at remaking a classic. I really hope nobody goes to see this movie. Except every time something like this has happened (more money means we can do more!), the new money is never devoted to what made the original medium popular/successful in the first place, but spent entirely on targeting demographics that weren't interested in the original products. Movies and video games, right now, are primarily targeting people who don't want to watch a movie or play a video game, because there are more of those people than there are people who actually give a fuck about any sort of commercialized entertainment.
