So I admit, I've literally never watched any of the Sopranos but this video. Having said that, I've always read that this scene is "open-ended" with some people thinking that Tony gets murdered immediately afterwards. I'm not getting that at all from what I just watched. It focuses on a couple random characters but nothing seems to indicate to me that some shit is about to go down. Is that just some reddit-tards reading way too much into things or am I just dense as fuck?

Eh, that scene was nice but the episode itself wasn't great at all.

Star Trek Finales in order:
10/10 TNG: All Good Things...
07/10 VOY: Endgame
06/10 DS9: What You Leave Behind
05/10 TOS: Turnabout Intruder
04/10 ENT: These Are the Voyages...

>>
>>80487158
Earlier in that episode (or the episode before) Tony is talking about how his buddy died and how it happens "just like that", and you're totally fine, just going about your life, and suddenly you're gone.
Because of how abrupt the ending is, and also how he's sort of looking around at the guys a little suspiciously, many think that the earlier conversation was foreshadowing, and the cut to black at the end of the show was Tony getting taking out.

It's deliberately left ambiguous, and anyone telling you that he's definitely dead or definitely alive is talking out of their arse.
Think of it like the ending to Inception or Birdman.
>>
>>80487114
>would you like me to lie to you now?
bro, don't do this to me. only tv finale to ever make me cry like a baby.
>>
>>80487159
imo it's open ended, but that scene is shot in a way that you'd expect something big to happen. this may happen any second or maybe never which makes this scene so great.

>>80487114
>>80487232
TNG ending is truly goat. Clearly the best out of all of Trek. Great episode by itself, but the fact how it's connected to the very first episode is remarkable. I've heard that they worked almost 2 years on this episode (the writing I mean).

It hits every fucking emotional level. It has sheer awesomeness, heartstring-tugging, comedy gold, everything.
>>
>>80487451

Not even how it ends in the book. In the book, it's totally open-ended, they basically just drive into the Mist and that's it. The movie definitely has a better ending. Stephen Kind even said he was jealous he didn't think of it.
>>
>>80487159
It's because the camera keeps going back and forth between Tonys point of view and the bar, and the last shot after the people enter, where it would be Tonys point of view again it just goes black. That's why people theorize that he's killed in the final scene

>>

They theorize it because that's how they want it to end.

It's a possibility. That's the point. As Tony himself said, he'll either be killed or in jail and those are his options with Carlo flipping. So it doesn't matter, Tony is finished.

the ones who never gave up got fuckin shot lol

it completely turns any moral connotations around to be meaningless... the cowards were rewarded while the heroes are punished.

not saying that this ending couldn't have worked at all, but the protagonists needed to have made a bad decision earlier on that could set the ending up better.

They had it. They lost it. They gave up let themselves get shot.
And the thing is, most people in the audience at that moment would've been like "yeah that makes sense i can see that"
And then oh shit no, if you held on things couldve turned around.
They werent even in direct danger when they committed suicide.
There were no cowards in that movie. There was skeptics, heroes, and lunatics. No cowards.
>>
>>80493509
He blows his kid's brains out and literally seconds later all the mist clears and the American (fuck yeah) army rolls in out of nowhere and has completely solved the problem and magically that lady from the beginning of the movie didn't die despite literally everyone else dying within seconds of stepping out into the mist and not only that, but she found her kids and they are completely fine, too. It's so obnoxiously on the nose that the only way it could have been made more obvious is if the director were to step into frame and explain the message directly to the audience.

Moreover, the movie had already been exploring the theme of how people behave in times of panic. That's what the entire conflict at the grocery store was about. There was absolutely no need to tack on such a trite ending. It was some obvious attempt at melodrama that was so far over the top that it became parody.

It's what made the sequels as shitty as they are. Every fight is just going through the motions because Neo is unbeatable. The only good action scenes in the sequels are the ones Neo isn't a part of.

It's kino.

>>80494189
There's literally no way to talk about what makes the movie good unless you watch it first and THEN discuss if afterwards, and then rewatch a second time to see everything that was obvious once you know the ending. A lot of people criticized it saying it makes "no sense" and it's "supernatural," but there's absolutely nothing supernatural about it. It makes perfect sense.

But basically a very young Ryan Gosling goes to a psychologist and tells him he's gonna kill himself on his 21st birthday just like some french painter, and the movie goes from there.

No, you can read it right now, but read it again after watching it and try to place what he says with the ending, especially

>It is an illustration of the way the materials of life can be shaped for the purposes of the moment.

And how people and places seem to be repeating themselves. But there are no spoilers in the review.
>>
>>80494480
To be clear, your argument is that I can't say the way the ended the movie was bad unless I would also end the movie in the same way?

" I'm talking about how the ending was framed and executed."
So describe your different framing and execution.
Except you can't. Because the whole thing was 'retarded' and you just used the words framing and execution to sound like a real smart film criticizing guy.
>>
>>80494657
No, I was using those words because you started arguing about how it's perfectly believable that someone in a desperate situation might decide to shoot their kid. The point I was making has nothing at all to do with what is believable and what isn't. I'm talking about what's narratively appropriate for the film.

The ending is so over the top that it's funny. Which isn't inherently a problem, except it's tonally the opposite of everything that's been happening for the last 2 hours. Shawn of the Dead is a movie that ends essentially the same way, but it works because the movie is a comedy.

Except the tone is completely thrown off kilter by the quadruple euthanasia that just happened. Comparing it to Sean of the Dead is just fucking retarded. Similar events happen therefore its the same? Cinematography, context, follow up, score, every other fucking thing about it is different. Its not even a heroic charge like in Sean, its a slow plodding march with flamethrowers as opposed to machine guns.
How is it the opposite? Random normies have been fighting and doing ok against the monsters the whole movie. Killed spiders, shot the bugs, like its a natural progression.
You said the movie is about how people respond to panic. Thats what the ending is showcasing...but then saying its fucking retarded. Jesus.
Its not a fucking tonal shift to a Michael Bay film.

>>
>>80494948
It's a tonal shift because it's funny. You cannot take an act of filicide done out of desperation and then immediately contrast that with the very problem causing that desperation being immediately solved and have that come across as anything, but a joke. It is too over the top and too melodramatic and too obviously contrived. It literally goes from mist-covered hellscape to sunshine and freedom forces.

the very same thing is done in Shawn of the Dead. Shawn is forced to shoot his mother, nearly everyone else is killed, and then the Army rolls in and solves the problem. You even have Shawn's friend they bumped into earlier show up again, totally fine. For all I know, it's an intentional homage to The Mist for how closely it follows that ending. The difference is that SotD is a comedy, and so this works far better.

>>80495111
That point had already been made in the grocery store conflict. The ending was just tacky, overwrought trash.

Except the ending of Sopranos actually leaves you emotionally caring if Tony survives or not, and gives you a reason to theorize one way or another.

The ending of Inception, which anyone could see coming a mile away, is just a horribly written twist copout. "Woah it maybe is all a dream or maybe not! Who knows? Who cares? Fuck you."

This movie is so fucking overrated. Everyone goes into expecting "LE EBIL KILLERS" to be made to face their crimes and they barely ever do. The old skinny guy hams it up for the camera with his fake dry-heaving but the rest of them don't really seem to give a shit. And don't tell me that was the point of the movie because that point could have been made in a 5 minute interview with the guy in the glasses. The rest of the movie just meanders around the fact that these people are disgusting human beings without any consequence or resolution.
>>
>>80499708
>"I don't know what Joshua Oppenheimer's diptych The Act Of Killing (2012) and The Look Of Silence (2014) is about"
of course he wasn't expecting to make them face their crimes head-on, when Anwar Congo says near the end "I now understand how my victims felt" he immediately answers back "no, they knew what was happening was real"

it's more about the presence of history in the present as a persistant force of power and the way such a heavy silence effects a society moving into the present day, not some liberal vigilante indictment of the West, he touches on the imperialist aspect with the CIA's involvement in the genocide and stuff but it's never the centre of attention
>>
>>80500049
>it's more about the presence of history in the present as a persistant force of power and the way such a heavy silence effects a society moving into the present day,
Unless it's about the powerlessness of that presence and how society is largely completely unaffected by it then I don't see how he's making any sort of compelling point about those things.

I watched it just last year, it's extremely consistent to the point it makes me mad people ever say it has a "twist." Saying that completely shits on the director's intentions.

Every single line that gets repeated in the movie, everyone who appears, most of the things happening, they are all there at the scene of the accident. There are a SHITTON of clues, like Ewan's pants being just a little shorter than they should, because he is kneeling down next to Ryan's body and that's how he sees him. It's basically just his barely-conscious brain alucinating before death.
