Always thought this was great.

Back in like... 2011 or so there was this influx of people collecting posters. It became like a giant version of TCG, or Baseball card collections for a niche group of individuals with a lot of cash to burn.

Specifically the kind of people with theaters in their homes.

When artists started noticing that folks were snapping up hard to find posters, several groups banded together and began to make minimalist or hyper-stylized versions of posters for classic movies, as well as new releases. They would explicitly say that, "We're dropping a new poster in six hours!" And the only way you would know about this is via some sort of cryptic social media mention, or random email. They would also never tell you what the poster was going to be for, or how many they were going to print.

Typically they would limit do a limited run of say, 150 for the "normal" version and then significantly smaller prints of the variants that were far more expensive. Since you had to jump through so many hoops to get these things, they generated a market for resellers who bought them up in bulk and then upcharged via eBay in order to sell to the client that the services were actually for, but were usually too inept at using the internet to know how to navigate towards.

Basically, rich people wanted posters for a while. They didn't know how to get the posters, so other people bought them and then sold them on eBay. The market more or less died out in 2014, some sites still exist but it was a very short-lived fad.
