Wow, my 4-year never deviated from daily quiz+lecture or test+conversation period, and I still felt underinformed when I finally moved to Japan.
I've been watching Samurai movies.
I've seen Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Harakiri & Kill!, what next?

You are in for a real disappointment. They're fucking awful.
>>80438839
That's a shame. I'll watch the first couple to decide on my own but thanks for the heads up.
>>80438839
This guy is full of shit and has shit taste, theyre fucking great, iconoclastic storytelling. If epic stories of fathers and sons don't get to you, you're a faggot.
>>80435363
Check out Street Mobster by Kinji Fukasaku. This film supposedly was an influence in Reservoir Dogs - there are some noticeable similarities. This director also did Battle Royale, among many other things
>>80439225
I'll reserve judgment until I've watched them anon
>>80436041
This guy's a true connoisseur.
Finally, some very appropriate place to ask my question.
I saw Sheena Ringo's "God Nor Buddha" music video out of random clicking (learned about the artist from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics teaser)...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42W8bxW14sU
...and I was pretty interested in the characters, especially the black swordsman (1:03) and the bearded white-robed man (1:11). I thought I'd search the director (the end credits say Kodama Yuichi), but turns out he does only commercials.
What kind of movies that kinda touch close to that video's...aesthetic or concept (minus the modern instruments, of course)? Looks like a mish-mash of feudal-setting samurai + horror?
>>80440248
Yamagata Scream, sort of. It's more of a horror comedy, the plot is that bunch of samurai zombies get revived in modern day and start killing school kids on a field trip.
Are there any good live action Japanese dramas I can follow?
>>80440248
Not feudal setting but Tokyo: The Last Megalopolis 1988.
The black swordsman is the parody of Kato from this film.
>>80440248
Sheena Ringo's remix album Heisei Fuzoku is among my top 5 albums of all time, check it out anon.
>>80435363
Himitsu
same director as >>80435433
but a lot better movie
>>80440489
If you want serious dramas, not really, unless you like super soapy, overtly dramatic, emotionally fueled stuff.
Yasashii Jikan, Code Blue, Sekai no Chuushin de Ai wo Sakebu and Shiroi Haru are some of the better hard dramas, but even they have their over the top emotional stuff.
>>80440489
From 5 to 9, i dunno if you will like it but i just felt interested watching a love story with a monk as mc
>>80435429
Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift
>>80441037
Idk how I can describe what I'm looking for, but is there a Japanese drama series for example like Boardwalk Empire? Taking place during the Meiji period?
>>80441124
Thanks I'll look into it
