Yes. Some major X men characters were supposed to have their own "origins" movie - Magneto and Gambit were 2 of them - but Wolvorigins was such a disaster that they scrapped that idea and turned the Magneto Origins idea into Xmen First class

Unless they want to retcon the wildy successful Deadpool we currently have, he's not going to be a mercenary in a prequel. His first movie was his "origins" movie and he wasn't even a "merc" but more of a strongarm for hire.
