The casual cruelty of the cops at the end is what really fucked me up.

Yeah, but It was mentioned when they were talking about the household AI, that most people would just say "who the fuck cares, it's a robot".
For us, the technology is so advanced that we assume that it must be a very big deal, but I think it's realistic that people wouldn't care that much.
Plus they were cops, most of them are not that into the rights of others, so it must have been like kicking the dog of your asshole neighbour to them.

It's to show how cruel humans can be. AI as depicted in the show is very much 'alive'. It thinks and feels as it's an exact digital copy of the mind of the original.

It may not be 'alive' in the sense that humans are, but it is still very much alive in it's own way, and the cops flippantly set it into an eternity of never-ending torture 'just because lel'.

It's the most interesting part of the show, and probably the kind of shit that set the wheels in motion for a future like the Matrix. Humans are still utterly barbaric to animals and even other humans, what hopes do we have when presented with AI to torture because we're bored.

I think the point is that people don't see the digital copies as living or sentient. They think it's just a copy of human electrical brain patterns and stuff, which is exactly what a human is anyway but they see themselves as superior out of arrogance.

Just how you can torture a Sim and feel nothing about it. As technology advances we'll have better and better simulations.. will we reach the point when we will see it as a living, sentient thing or will we just treat it as we treat any simulation right now? Who knows.

Sure, there was a big element of that, but they had the same contempt for the actual, flesh and blood guy the had in custody.
