All of JJ's monsters look like the same overly busy unimaginative CGI trash.

It's particularly apparent in Super 8 because the monster and the kid are supposed to have an emotional connection similar to ET and Elliot but it's just a flatline mostly because the monster design is horrendous. That's the point of Cap's Avengers costume. Coulson designed his version of a cool Captain America costume, like you'd see on a comic book page. But, like most superhero costumes transferred to real life, it looked like someone dressing up in a homemade superhero costume. His sketches and designs probably looked wicked cool, but when actually put on Steve, it looked as retarded as it does.
It was probably bulletproof and fairly comfy to wear, as well, so it's not surprising he wore it into battle in NYC. (He didn't really have time to discuss wardrobe before he went to Germany to get Loki.)

Like most things, it just got pushed too far. With makeup that's trying to look realistic - less really is more, as evidenced by your pic. Start throwing too many wrinkles on actors and it just looks fucking absurd like that Prometheus one.
