As far as I looked, nobody presented in the movie was the Zodiac. To this day, the best theory i've seen is that the zodiac was a insider of the Vallejo police district, and he wrote the letters, because he would have the cases specifcs and there was a great wave of corruption back then in the city. They say in this theory ALA killed the first 2 couples, and then, a copycat killed the 3rd (leaving the husband alive by mistake) and another copycat killed the cab driver. And the police would have all the evidence within range (reminder that the zodiac never contacted the police after the first couple was murdered, he always would call months latter)

Damn now I wish I followed the case more closely and know all the suspects. I remember something new came up a couple years ago. Some suspect was eliminated, some was basically confirmed. But I don't remember anything specific.

I'm more interested in Jack the Ripper. I assume the two cases are not too much different. From time to time a new guy comes out and says that he solved the case which only annoys people who spent a couple decades investigating it. The true experts usually say that nothing is certain.

Two of the most senior officers involved in the hunt (Anderson and Swanson) revealed that one suspect was identified by a witness as a person assaulting one of the victims minutes before they found her body but he refused to testify (they were both Jewish and just a year earlier a Jew named Lipski was hanged for murder so the guy didn't want another wave of attacks directed at Jews).

The guy was named Aaron Kosminski and interestingly enough he lived just across the street to the place of the first murder and basically at the place of the third (canonical) murder. Recently I listened to a lecture about the whole thing and whether or not Anderson and Swanson were being honest. The guy evaluated the probability of him being the ripper at little over 70%. Not bad.

And the shawl? It's fake. Kosminski has been a prime suspect since mid-20th century. The guy just chose him because of this. The test proved nothing.

I could see the argument for ALA killing the second couple because that is really the only one that had the strongest circumstantial evidence and possible motive (him living near Darlene Farrin, possibly knowing her, rumours of him being over at her place for the paint party, going to the diner she worked at etc.)
Again I need to re-read the book and research but my memory of the movie is hazy on them trying to connect him to the other murders and they barely talk about the murder of the first couple.

This entire case just goes to show even if you are border line retarded you can get away with murder as long as you are not murdering people you are connected in some way with.

Even in this day and age it's really fucking hard to do anything with case unless the killer is:
A. A retard and leaves retard evidence
B. In the social network of the victim, and even then a good motive needs to be established
C. Is already in the system from a previous crime and gets picked up by DNA
Without being in the system/being in contact with the victim previously, they have nothing to run DNA evidence against.
