Seems like there are a lot of productions coming out now which take place in cyberpunk and post-cyberpunk scenarios. The biggest one is Ghost in the Shell, of course, but there is also Blade Runner 2049 on the horizon as well as smaller productions like Black Mirror which often touches on it and shows like Altered Carbon which has the description of:
>"ALTERED CARBON is set in a future where consciousness is digitized and stored in cortical stacks implanted in the spine, allowing humans to survive physical death by having their memories and consciousness "re-sleeved" into new bodies. "
Cyberpunk and "New Retro Wave" threads are very popular on multiple boards of 4chan, reddit, and other social media sites.
What do you think? Is this the new fad to take the place of the zombies and vampire genres that were popular in the last ten years?

>Cyberpunk: The New Fad?
Jesus I hope so.
What with the all the government conspiracy involving mass surveillance, emergence of extreme political schisms, saturation of media biases, social upheaval, meme warefare, hackers becoming a thing again, we could definitely be in for a new wave of relatable cyberpunk. Original cyberpunk came from a specific time and place and doesn't work like it did back in the day, but now we have fresh material.

Keep in mind whenever something becomes popular it also becomes watered down and departs from the original themes that made it unique.
Ghost in the Shell looks to just be a typical revenge action movie with cyberpunk window dressing. Becoming a cyborg can be the new vampirification.

Is this 30 years too late for the era and about 10 years too late for the 80s nostalgia?
Can we please just get to the late 90s nostalgia full time? I need Toonami-style movies done with Linkin Park music.
Best Cyberpunk ever
>Blade Runner sequel
>Ryan Gossling
WHY, who made this shitty decision?
Also I will say here that I rather hope that it doesn't become a fad because life tends to imitate fiction. And most of cyberpunk deals with worlds that suck. I don't want to see a generation of young people indoctrinated into the idea that the future is bleak.

>I need Toonami-style movies done with Linkin Park music.
Oh god.... I'm cringing remembering all those shitty AMVs I used to download on limewire in 1999.
>anime guy flipping around killing people with a katana
>FEELING LIKE A FREAK ON A LEASH >:3
Nothing perssonnell kids

>Can we please just get to the late 90s nostalgia full time?
God yes, please. And let's have a little grunge era beforehand as well to wash the taste of the last 15 years of crass commercialism and overly-stylized media out of our mouths.

>crass commercialism and overly-stylized media
I thought the Neo-80's fad was all about bringing back shameless consumerism
I'm sick and tired of half of the commercials on TV having ukeleles and folk music in the background, like you just bought your McDonalds at the fucking farmer's market or something.
>drinking coke is how I express myself
>how do you express YOUR myCoke?
It's disingenuous as fuck.
Bring back the old brutally honest advertising from the 80s that has nothing but a gigantic brand name and maybe a picture of the product.
>BUY COKE NOW FAGGOT
At least they're not bullshitting you.
>>80396412
The 80s fad is about about a half-forgotten rose-tinted glasses version of the 80s, not the actual 80s
>>80395846
You didn't mention Mute, another cyberpunk movie due out this year.
www.imdb.com/title/tt1464763/

>BUY COKE NOW FAGGOT
This made me kek, anon
>>80395846
>there will never be a shadowrun movie
>there will never be a syndicate wars movie
>>80396754
this. the 80s fad is about an 80s that never existed, but in the mind of millennials. thats why its so fake and cringy and politically correct.
80s minus the cocaine, if you will.
>>80396754
same with the 70s, 60s, 50s, 40s, 30s, 20s, and every other period in history
>>80395870
Same. Cyberpunk is probably my favourite fictional setting.
>>80396412
Holy shit I agree with you.
I say the same thing to people.
Having these massive billion dollar companies act personal is so fucking annoying.
