The visor is made of special clear stuff that he can see through and the beams don't penetrate or harm. There's a function (in the visor, his gloves or mentally controlled depending on version) that retracts the material and shapes the beam.

It wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible.

But they have to do something about Mystique. It's not that I mind that they made her a "hero" in the eyes, it makes sense in the context of how the last movie ended (even though they ignored that Mystique disguised herself as Stryker and took in Wolverine at the end), but if she's around, Cyclops can't become a leader.

She either needs to die or have something where she becomes a villain.

In the movies it's whatever they want for the scene. Like, not eveything and everybody he shoots with it get cut it half or set on fire, they just get blasted away. Other times shit gets lit.

In the comics it's legit just concussive, like getting hit by a powerful blow.

But as said, nobody really cares because nobody really cares about Cyclops in the movies
