The fact that they even cut out the bit in the Remembrance script where Ace just mentioned fancying a guy named Julian in school and never doing anything about it still baffles me. Like the word "fancy" is too risque for Saturday teatime. (Of course in Love and War, it turns out she did try something and he turned her down, and she later found out it was because he was gay, but I'm pretty sure that's all Paul Cornell, not Aaronovitch.)

Actually, the "lesbians are all gonna get a man eventually" is a real stereotype. And although we have had lesbians in this show before, making the main companion a lesbian, who just has a relationship, is actually pretty revolutionary. Every time you do that, children who are watching learn that it's no big deal to have a friend or acquaintance who is a lesbian. And there are still places where being a lesbian is seen as weird or wrong. Children don't really grow up homophobic--they are taught it. But seeing the lesbian companion going to save the galaxy (her being in a relationship isn't that important, but it's not unrealistic) helps them.

And we don't get to see too many blatant lesbian relationships in family shows. Only recently, and all I can think of is Steven Universe, which does it through metaphor.

From what I've heard, young women who are unsure or closeted, or afraid to be revealed as a lesbian, are often helped by seeing a character who is a lesbian. It lets hem know it's okay to be a lesbian, and that no matter what people or bullies say, they aren't bad. Bill doesn't have to do much--as far as it seems, her being lesbian won't interfere with the narrative too much. But it will help children learn it's okay to be a lesbian, and that lesbians shouldn't be judged. And that's what Doctor Who is all about.

So, for example, instead of Bill teaming up with the Doctor and them going off in the TARDIS together at the end of the first episode, it happened over a few episodes? So the first few episodes are from Bill's perspective at the Uni and involve the Doctor and lots of weird shit, but he is still this sort of separate mysterious entity that she's curious about.

At least part of that is because "no hanky panky" on the TARDIS rules. Without that rule, there would probably have been more relationships. We've known the relationship status of almost every NuWho companion. And in the books, audios, and comics, there have been quite a few companion relationships. Yes, definitely.

Pre-JNT, things were actually a bit more varied. Ian and Barbara or Jamie and Victoria were maybe just hinted at, but Jamie and Samantha, Jo and Yates, Jo and Clifford Jones, the Brig's reverie about Doris, and any number of characters who weren't companions but were central to the show for 6 weeks…And doing that with some of the characters but not all of them means that they could have had a character who happened to be a lesbian, not shown us anything more than that, and it would have been fine. (Well, OK, they obviously couldn't have gotten away with that in 1968, but it would be fine in retrospect.)

And that's really the way the EDAs, the DWM comics, and Big Finish have mostly played things. Some characters have a romance arc (or just lots of shagging), some don't, and that works. If Evelyn turned out to be gay, her story would have ended with a woman instead of a man, but if Erimem turned out to be gay, it would change nothing except maybe that one line about how maybe love isn't impossible but it isn't important would have to be cut in half.

It would be nice if NuWho could be like that too, eventually.

Some of the novels, she was pretty terrible, because it took the writers a while to figure her out. But when she worked, yeah, she was perfect.

She fits all the scant details we have, but she has that natural beauty look, and I always saw Compassion more as someone who was pretty, but deliberately didn't put in the effort, especially while traveling with Fitz. Think of all the times he thinks that she's plain (but he'd shag her anyway because of her curves). Nobody would ever think Rose Leslie was plain, even if she'd just woken up from sleeping in the woods.

Shauna Kain, who played Siryn in the X-Men movies and Red Riding Hood's friend in that movie a few years ago. She usually has long, red hair, but she was in an ad for… a car? I forget, something… and she had short, spiky, bleached white hair, and it worked on her pretty well. And I remember her being pretty decent for a teen actor in X2. (She was terrible in Red Riding Hood, but even Gary Oldman was pretty bad in that, so I don't think it's her fault.)

I used to love this show, up until Capaldi came along. Something about his acting was lacking the Doctor's personality. I watched the first season with Somali and it didnt even finish watching the finale. The writing for this show went so downhill, it's not even funny. It has lost it's creativity when the writers decided to make a Mad Lib version of Doctor Who and just drew keywords from a hat.
"Dalek" "Manhattan" "Miniature"
And it couldve ended at Smith so easily. The Doctor could've just found Gallifrey and thats it. The story goes full circle and theyre done. But now the creators are milking the fuck out of this ugly cow they have that dispenses more pus and blood than milk.

I used to love pretending to hate on this show until Capaldi came along. Something about his acting was lacking the Doctor's cokehead annoyingness. I watched the first season with Capaldi and I couldn't even flame the finale. The acting for this show went so uphill, there's no way to make it sound funny. I guess I could try complaining about things that didn't actually happen in that season, like "Manhattan", which Matt Smith and David Tennant (and William Hartnell) repeatedly visited but Capaldi never did, and hope nobody notices. Will that work? You know what else sucks? They won't let Capaldi use his Scottish accent. Seriously, why hire him and force him to be English? Also, why is every companion suddenly in love with the Doctor? Anything else I could make up and then pretend to be angry about? Um… Moffat is a fat gay Welshman!
