they're actually pretty creepy honestly, like all the dead souls cheering him on to kill himself, probably THE most jarring thing in the whole movie is Fozzie Bear out of fucking nowhere.

I watched it like 2 weeks ago, I loved it.
The comedy parts are the best.

Btw I don't like the evil dead (but the recent series is really good)

Jesus what a deeply unnerving scene. Usually it's a complaint to have so many incredibly jarring tone shifts happening in rapid succession, but somehow it seriously works. Then you lay all of that over the fact that there's a lunatic in the back row of a porno theatre having an argument with himself about how to commit suicide with fake moans and all.

Yes, I think it's one of the best horror films ever made. For me, the "comedy" works because it comes from the characters - he's trying to maintain a positive attitude and still get some enjoyment out of his trip to Europe, in spite of the crazy shit that's happening to him.

The best parts of the film are the conversations he has with his dead friend, who's in a further state of decay each time he shows up. The main actor does a great job of playing it like "God damn it, please don't let me be THIS crazy"

I haven't seen it in a few years, but I don't remember it ever getting slapstick or laugh-out-loud funny, the humor is subtler and it comes from watching the characters react in very relatable ways to an insane, unrelatable situation.
