Foundation is fantastic and full of interesting characters.

Asimov's a master of the short fiction genre. In the original Foundation trilogy in particular at the end of every chapter there is essentially a plot twist and he writes brilliant conclusions for each mini story to boot.

I feel like he has had a strong impact on Doctor Who too. For example, Asimov has a lot of mentalics/people who display psychic powers in his works a bit like Irving Braxiatel and other Doctor Who characters - but on a significantly greater scale.

Moreover there is a strong underlying theme of mathematics in his work. That seems to be an ongoing area in books - Jack Vance, for example - has magicians who use mathematical equations to fuel their magic.

It's an interesting puzzle to see where the influences on Doctor Who came from.

Psychic powers were a thing in SF way before Asimov, going back to early pioneers like Edgar Rice Burroughs, and they appeared in everything from space opera adventure to hard SF. It was really only in the 70s that people started to realize maybe it's not actually science after all and push it into fantasy. (And even then, Anne Rice still did the old "haha look, my magic isn't magic, it's actually science psi powers" thing, and of course Star Wars.)

Meanwhile I think Doctor Who's version of psychic powers owes more to early pulp sci-fi than to Asimov. Especially the whole idea of tying it to whatever fringe science concept is popular this week and will be laughed at next week—Asimov would never have used Sheldrake's "morphic fields" to explain things the way Robert Holmes did.

And I think that's true for almost everything in Who, except for a handful of writers like Bidmead. They were taking ideas that were just "standard SF ideas" from 50s/60s movies borrowed from earlier pulp SF novels, nothing from more recent written SF.

It's thanks to such great educational programming that England was the first nation to the Moon and Mars by the end of the decade!

I watched Quatermass and the Pit because one of my friends hyped it up as one of the best British scifi stories ever, but I just got annoyed for the majority of it. The pacing made a Hartnell story feel like a Tennant one. I'm still very interested in Nigel Kneale's writing though, so maybe I'll give another Quatermass serial a shot.

I hope the first Doctor isn't the big reveal, the first Doctor especially played by a different actor just ugh... hope it's 8 or 9.

Sometimes the show (and likewise the novels, etc.) goes out of its way to try to imply that between the pants-shittingly dangerous and horrifically tragic adventures we see there are dozens of fun ones where nothing goes wrong.

But I don't think anyone actually believes that. Characters regularly comment on the fact that any time they land anywhere things go wrong, and it always happens shortly after they say that. Not to mention that some of the episodes clearly follow on directly after the previous one, without weeks of fun in between, and the rest of them, the gaps in between eventually gets backfilled by MA/PDA novels or BF audios that are just as bad.

Is there a decently active torrent or spot to download some older Big Finish stuff? I'm trying to grab some earlier Main Range and Companion Chronicles stuff, but most of the torrents are dead or extremely slow.

Doctor Who's first and foremost priority is to entertain and there isn't much entertainment to be found if nothing happens.

I'm sure there's at least one story where 7 and Ace go to a planet where there are Daleks, but instead of exterminating, they make free pizzas. And then 7 and Ace just eat pizzas for the entire adventure while high-fiving the Daleks. The end.

Different companions have always reacted differently. Ian and Barbara wanted to get the fuck off the TARDIS before the Doctor got them killed, but Tegan was the same way two decades later, if not worse. Meanwhile, Vicki was just as excited for danger and adventure as Rose.

You'd think that makes sense, but look at how many times we see them go directly from one death-defying story into another (especially during the parts of the Classic era where most stories ended with a cliffhanger to the next one).

And again, the companions are always grumbling about how every time the Doctor says "vacation" what he actually means is "run for your life". Why would they say that if they really had lots of nice vacations?

Also, the few times the Doctor actually tries to go on a nice, relaxing vacation to Blackpool or Brighton or the Eye of Orion, what happens? Usually, he doesn't get there—and when he does, the Celestial Toymaker is there or someone is ripping his past selves out and sending them to the Death Zone.

Still, there are at least 1500 years between Unearthly Child and Heaven Sent. Maybe the Doctor has completely different sets of companions we never saw who rarely had their lives threatened?

I wouldn't say only the "hardline" fans would get excited. Anyone with a beyond-casual knowledge of the show knows who the First Doctor is. And if it's played right they wouldn't even have to know. Think of Series 3's Master reveal - that's gone down as one of the best DW cliffhangers ever because even non-fans realised it was an "OH SHIT!" moment.
