Bullshit. Alright, it's maybe not the cleverest, but songs like Skid Row and Suddenly Seymour are fucking great.

Singing in the Rain

Some day. I did get to see Les Miserables on Broadway at least.

>>80313002
I've wanted to see it for ages. Both that and Matilda.
>>
>>80313054
I saw Matilda in New York too, it was pretty good, though the girl plaing Matilda had the WORST English accent. I'm English though so that might be why I noticed it.

The best thing about Matilda was the staging. It was really clever how they did everything.

I just feel like if I'm going to see it I'd rather see it properly on stage. It was the same with Les Mis, if I'm going to see it I want to see it properly.

I tend to enjoy things more if I see them on stage anyway. I saw Fiddler on the Roof (for free) the other day and enjoyed it a lot, but I know I wouldn't have liked it if I hadn't seen it live.

Sondheim hates them and is against everything they stand for. He wrote "Please, Hello!" in Pacific Overtures as a kind of jab at them.

>>
>>80314536
>What do G&S "stand for"
I thought you mean the initials at first lol.

they crammed unnatural language into fast time signatures in order to create their famed patter songs, which Sondheim argues is a horrible and fraudulent methodology for writing musical songs.

He probably also hated that they only created light operettas that didn't move the art form forward in humanistic way. he basically thinks THEY'RE hacks.
>>
>>80314536
>>80314725
you can watch this for a primer on what Sondheim thought of G&S and how Please, Hello is an answer to that:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rp6CWcs2j8
>>
>>80314725
>Unnatural language

Not really though, not for the time. Everything in English theatre was like that, as the entire industry was up its own arse. That combined with the fact that it's operetta means that it was always about fitting weird words around a tune and not the other way around.

It sounds like he's getting annoyed about the fact it's structured more like opera.
>>
>>80314725
>I thought you mean the initials at first lol.
Jesus Christ, you're an idiot.
>>
>>80314602
The book for West Side Story is deeply terrible, even it's biggest fans would admit this. And practically every Jew in New York has a Pulitzer.

I don't think he's a hack, but his work hasn't aged well.

Hamilton is brilliant. Its so good it makes me forget its a liberal propaganda fest.
>>
>>80314897
he didn't write the book, just the lyrics. the lyrics are what didn't age well, but it was his first big show and he was like 26 or something absurd so you can hardly call them a failure.

And all the best and most memorable lines came directly from him too, so it goes both ways.

>>80322620
it's unwatchable. it's a pastiche of artsy-fartsy cliches strung together. it's an art movie for people who otherwise would never watch art movies. instead of being a movie in its own right, it's just as a sideshow/sidekick to a rock album.

to its credit, alan parker mutes the voices and tells the story from within, pulling you under the psychology of his character. but none of it works. it's just so much hokum and malarky. it's almost embarassing to watch the nightmarish, hypnotic, and apocalyptic rock album reduced to stuffy images of childhood loss, class oppression, and modern alienation. it's bad shit.

that said, the animation sequences are truly outstanding.

Anything by Jason Robert Brown or Frank Wildhorn is usually a safe bet especially Parade and Jeckel and Hyde.

Good luck playing Orin!

Nothing makes me feel better than watching a good musical

It's not the greatest musical, I admit, but what's with the absolute hate for Repo! ?
It has some fun characters, some good songs, some interesting parts.

You've never dreaded going to the dentist? It's like all the worst caricatures of it combined into hilarious terror.

Dentist is one of the best. The song pulls off a perfect musical punchline.

Audrey's boyfriend has been built up to be an abusive creep who gives her black eyes. Someone asks what does a guy like that do for a living? Cut to Steve Martin singing the opening verse about his youth torturing small animals.

>Boy, I think some day you'll find a way to make your natural tendencies pay...
>YOU'LL BE A DENTIIIIST

>Mean Green Mother
Better wait a minute.
Ya better hold the phone.
Ya better mind your manners.
Better change your tone.

Don't you threaten me son.
You got a lot of gall.
We gonna do things my way.
Or we won't do things at all.

Ya don't know what you're messin' with.
You got no idea.
Ya don't know what you're lookin' at
When you're lookin' here.

Ya don't know what you're up against,
No, no way, no how.
You don't know what you're messin' with,
But I'm gonna tell you now!

Get this straight!
I'm just a mean green mother from outer space
and I'm bad.
I'm just a mean green mother from outer space
and it looks like you been had.
I'm just a mean green mother from outer space,
So get off my back, 'n get out my face,
'Cause I'm mean and green
And I am bad.

These are what you consider good lyrics?
>>
>>80331140
>things are bad because I say so

>>80331236
I like good quality lyrics, not childlike garbage. I also don't care to communicate explicitly with the likes of you, moron. You're beneath me. That isn't autism, it's elitism.

>>80331264
That's a decent argument, but doesn't hold with LSoH, which is pretty much bad in every conceivable way.
>>

It's the best song in the musical along with Feed Me. Fuck off.

Saw this for my birthday and bought a Hasa Diga Eebowa shirt. I work with a couple Ugandans now and im thinking about asking them if it actually means fuck you god.
>>
>>80330541
It's fun but i'm not really watching for the singing.
>>
>>80332826
Ugandan here. Hasa Diga Eebowai literally means "toilet holiday for the gods" in our language.
>>
>>80317654
Best scene in the whole movie is "Masquerade"
It's kinda fucked up overall though. Schumacher missed the point on the really simple symbolism of roses, and Gerard Butler's voice really undersells certain songs such as "All I Ask of You (reprise)"
>>
>>80325592
La Vie Boheme is pretty solid until Mimi and Roger get the last half of the song.

The older I get the more I realize Rent is fucking stupid, and I don't see how it was popular in the first place
