What I love about Casino is that its metaphysical from start to finish, there are paintings everywhere illustrating the character's interior lives and Sam Rothstein is basically a Kafka character for the modern world.

In Goodfellas things start differently, we're "thrown into a non-metaphysical world", at the beginning of the movie although there's a hint of metaphysics when Karen is watching television and seeming to have second thoughts about her husband and his lifestyle. We're forced to reconsider the whole criminal environment when Tommy's mother displays her oil painting partway through the film. Suddenly the old, religious, patriarchal, metaphysical world is on full display again... it throws the whole movie into spiritual chaos.
