Is Gladiator as influential on Hollywood as critics and fans claim it to be or are they exaggerating its impact on cinema?
This movie came out in 2001 and I didn't watch until two days ago. I feel like missing the film's release year means you'll never be able to appreciate how impactful it was (unless it has a meme magic effect).
It's a great movie, I wasn't aware that it was seen as super influential tho.
It brought back the swords and sandals genre which had been effectively dead since the classic Hollywood era. It featured some remarkable CGI work for its time, it was kind of a return to form for Ridley Scott and it made Russel Crowe from a young promising actor (LA Confidential, The Insider) to a full blown A-lister. It did a similar thing to Joaquin Phoenix as well.

It wasn't influential, just popular.

>in the script, Maximus is granted eternal life by the Roman gods, so he spends most of the film trying to reunite with his son, who has joined an army of early Christians. There are a lot of epic fight scenes (duh). But the best part is the finale, which is apparently a montage of Maximus showing up during battles throughout modern history, including World War II and Vietnam. The script ends with Maximus in the Pentagon.
Christ on a stick.

If it wasn't a weird gladiator sequel that ending would be a great premise.
Holy shit, is this Hans Zimmer's magnum opus? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yOZEiHLuVU

I feel like this movie was the inspiration for the turn toward "dark/gritty" action movies.

>the inspiration for the turn toward "dark/gritty" action movies
The '90s are full of them: From Braveheart to Seven.

I really think it is really overrated. It's just a proto version of Kingdom of Heaven, which is really better doneI also never seen another film with Joaquin Phoenix because of his stupid acting in Gladiator
by influential they mean saved ridleys career, who has been massive ever since

Joaquin Phoenix is a GOAT actor, trust me on this one, anon. Think of his performance in Gladiator as noob's first walkthrough. You want to see how much he developed? Watch Her (2014).

Comfy full on Roman without Christianity subplot (like Ben Hur) sword and sandle film with actual on screen violence, gladiators, and revenge story

>It's just a proto version of Kingdom of Heaven, which is really better done
I refuse to believe that there is a human being alive with this opinion.

I am really afraid, because he looks like "le cringy miserable actor"

>Thinking that a movie famous for the line "I once fought for two days with an arrow through my testicle" is better than a movie whose landmark line is "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!"

I know Kingdom of Heaven has Orlando Bloom, but it's still much better than Gladiator with Le Edgy Emperor, and Le Incest, and Le Russel Crowe wanting revenge for his family dying, so he becomes a gladiator, and Le DUDE, MARCUS AURELIUS WAS SO COOL, HE EVEN WANTED TO RESTORE THE OBVIOUSLY BETTER REPUBLIC

Read this post out loud and think about how much of an insufferable fucking faggot you sound like. Grow up, you memeing retard.
Also, you're no longer allowed to like KoH DC. I refuse to share a taste in movies with a socially retarded manchild.
Reminder that this is the superior Ridley/Crowe flick
