Post modern monster film kino. Twist on genre expectations and self reflective.

>the opening fight between the Japanese and American pilot was a foreshadowing of Godzilla vs Kong.
>Samuel L. Jackson saying "Hold on to your butts" from Jurassic Park
>Sun silhouette shots and Music on helicopter speakers from Apocalypse Now (timecode is 3m21s, sorry I couldn't get it to work on mobile)
>"We'll Meet Again" song could be referencing Dr. Strangelove (or it could just be a song in the movie)
>Kong holding Brie Larson/Kong in chains referencing the 1933 King Kong
>Maybe it was just me but the first thing I thought of when the Japanese pilot survived the shots from young John C. Reilly was the "divine intervention" in the beginning of Pulp Fiction (with Jules aka Sam Jackson) (again, timecode issues, it is at 1m27s)
>John C. Reilly's jacket was supposed to reference the jackets worn in Akira and the insignia on it was in reference to Travis Bickle's King Kong Company patch in Taxi Driver
>"Born to breed" written on the soldier's helmet referred to "Born to kill" in Full Metal Jacket.
>Tom Hiddleston's character was named Conrad, referring to Joseph Conrad, the author of Heart of Darkness which was more or less adapted into Apocalypse Now. John C. Reilly's character was named Maslow, who is a character in Heart of Darkness.
>Definitely not an homage but all I could think of during the flashbulb-in-the-monster scene was the cellphone-in-dino-poop part of Jurassic Park 3
>>
Contemporary Color is a better movie
>>
viet cong = king kong in the eyes of samauel l jackson.

Felt like some purgatory hell where soldiers were trapped
>>
"We'll Meet Again" was definitely a Dr. Strangelove reference, not only is that the most likely place that most young people have heard it, but it brings up the idea of nuclear weapons that is apparently central to this franchise
>>
Is this a joke thread? Are you claiming the movie is good because it makes subtle yet obvious references to other movies?
>>
The opening line of this movie was like "there will not be a crazier time in Washington" and everyone in the theater laughed
If that's not kino I don't know what is

I think OP is making a statement that the movie is good despite the hamfisted references. I like how they gave Kong actual development. The motion capture actor is probably the best actor in the entire movie.

CGI was too obvious. I liked how they kept the giant rubber hand at least as Kong set down the girl after her drowning and almost becoming a skully snack
>>
>>80300419
He is black.
Americans are black.

Godzilla is a cancer ridden millenia old guy.

I don't get people who hate this movie. It does exactly as it said. Kong: Skull Island is about a creature named Kong on the Skull Island. What more do you expect from this, some deep symbolysm or teaching message to the people? No dammit when I saw a movie poster with big giant ape I want to watch it for the giant fucking ape. Definitely would recommend for a weekend getaway.

you friccin moron, you missed literally the best, most subtle reference.

Toby Kebbel is Kong's Motion Capture Actor. He also plays Chapman, the guy who's brutally eaten by the Skully and has a kid. This mirrors Andy Serkis in Peter Jackson's King Kong, who is the motion capture for Kong and also plays a military dude that gets eaten by those leech things in the bug scene.

(Sidenote: Toby Kebbel also played the villaing in the most recent Apes movie, opposite Andy Serkis as Caesar)

was a bretty good movie. I felt like they really could have cut some scenes out entirely.

Also did anyone else feel that Kongs reveal was way too early? I think it would have been cool to not have gotten a real look at him until he comes eye to eye with Sam L and the end of the helicopter chaos. The characters should have constantly been questioning what they even saw to make the fear of the island more potent.

You're wrong, and that's a big part of why the film sucks so much. Every one of those 13 people gets a personal scene meant to drive their character arc. You can not fit that much into two hours and also have a good action plot.

I can see that, but I felt like it didn't take too much away from it. The only person who felt legitimately out of place was the chinese woman, she did literally nothing throughout the whole fucking film. Even the whiny indian guy had the mysterious suitcase that he clung to even as he got carried away to his death.

Besides, this movie was supposed to mirror Vietnam. The soldiers didn't want to be there and every 10 steps some of them got killed no matter how hard they tried. On an island of monsters, what was going to kill them and be an obstacle for them other than monsters, their fucking relationships with eachother?

>>
>>80317690
To monsters. Humans have killed Godzilla.

That being said, I think thematically what works best is if Kong wins the battle but loses the war. Let me explain:
The Godzilla Kong dichotomy is usually divided east versus west, but what if we think of their actual thematic purposes?

Godzilla represents a force of nature, karma meant to reap what is sown. He is God. Kong is a humanoid (remember: he's not a gorilla, he's something else entirely) primate that starts as the a strong leader from the islands and reaches the modern world and climbs to the highest point as king. He is destined to die by flaws not unlike humans: hubris, love, and wrath. Kong is man.

With it being man vs God, it makes sense for Kong to temporarily win but be destined to die and Godzilla lives to fight another day. It's basically what happened in the original film. it's the most poetic answer to the matchup.

That's not gonna happen though, it's gonna be batman vs superman so they can fight Ghidorah

Seriously
>Chink whose name I absolutely cannot remember with 6 lines of dialogue and no character lived
>Black Ivy league guy who can't act lived
>Black Platoon guy who can't act lived
>The other literally who's lived
>John Goodman, the only one who knew what was going on from the beginning and had genuine, explained motivation died
>Chapman dies off on his own for no real reason
>Soldier guy with the farmer's rifle, pretty much the only soldier who wasn't Sam Jackson to have something that resembles a character, dies in a very tonally confused scene
Goodman's death more than anything is the one that confuses me, he's ostensibly the main character but he gets unceremoniously offed like he's some guy we barely know

King Ghidorah was referred to as either "Ghidrah" or "Ghidorah" in the American versions of his first three movies, Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, Invasion of Astro-Monster and Destroy All Monsters, presumably because they sounded more like "hydra." He wasn't referred to as "King Ghidorah" in an original American release of one of his movies until Godzilla vs. Gigan.
>>

The American dub used "Ghidorah" for his first three films. It was "King Ghidorah" in Japan from the start

Just saw it. I loved it even though it was a disjointed mess.

Rate Kong's design
I give him a 7/10
>>
>>80326483
Same
The writing was bargain-bin tier but if nothing else, they knew how to throw together some pretty background for those action scenes, even if they go a bit heavy on the olive green and sunset orange. Between this and Godzilla '14, I'd say they're improving ever so slightly. At least this movie knows to just give you stuff you want to see instead of teasing you for an hour and a half
>>
>>80326644
Kong's design is 'big gorilla.' As long as its not overly fake looking, its a pretty generic look. Why bother to rate it at all?
>>
I had no problems with the characters of the movie. Though, I thought Sullivan's death was way too unnecessary but then I thought that he wouldn't do anything relevant in the rest of the movie

Hmmm

>Monkino
or
>Capeshit

Monkino all the way baby
>>
>>80327034
I think we're talking different things here, I was suggesting his 'design' in comparison to other Kaiju is rather generic, in that it is pretty much "big animal" without any flourish.

You may have meant to compare it against other versions of King Kong, and in that, there isnt a grade scale, it'd be more of a ranking system. Unless you set a grade scale (such as 1 being godzilla vs King kong maximum derp suit, and 10 being literally a trained gorilla)
>>

>Monkino
kek
>>80327163
Well, this Kong has some noticeable scars in his chest.
>>
>>80326711
Was he even a big gorilla? He doesn't walk or act like a gorilla, Jackson's Kong was more of a big gorilla

This Kong is a gigantic Bigfoot
>>
>>80327233
True, he's much closer to the original clay-mation Kong than Jackson's which I did like. I think that version of Kong works better cinematically. Even still, he's got all the physical features of a gorilla, which, when you compare it to 3 headed golden wiggle dragons or bipedal alligator monsters with dorsal spines, its a bit plain (not that that is always a bad thing).
>>
>>80299367
I didn't see it because the writer of the movie was a retard on Twitter.

Also, holy shit, is John C. Riley wearing blackface?
>>

dirt and spray on tan to imply he's lived in a jungle for years.

>Godzilla 2 happens
>post credit scene
>man: How the fuck are we suppose to deal with these monsters if they go out of control? None of our weapons actually work, and if Godzilla ever decides to turn on us, we are fucking dead! How are we suppose to deal with him?
>Monarch man: Don't worry, We had just obtained a monster of our own.
>A person walks into the room
>Everyone is surpised, they saw his plane get destroyed. No signs of being ejected. For all intent and purpose, he should be dead
>Guy: How are you alive
>The man says nothing just smiles
>You see his reflection in the mirror, but instead it's a silver and red man standing in his place.
>fade to black
>SWUATCH

Not gonna happen. They're combining these Godzilla movies with Pacific Rim.
>>
So is Skull island going to just be the world's "monster island"

>mfw, Skull island is an actual monster itself
>>
>>80327739
source? I mean I'm okay with that, but that's hard to believe.

unless the Kaiju comes from the world of Godzilla/Kong
>>
>>80327739
How? in Pacific Rim, it's heavily stated that the first time humanity entered in contact with a Kaiju was in 2013, there's no mention of MONARCH and there's not mention of Godzilla or Kong.
