Why is Nicholas Ray so overrated?

He's not overrated, but he was definitely held back by the Hays Code.
By whom?
>>80288226
By critics, in particular the Cahiers critics

He's not even a household name in the States. Critics liking someone =/= overrated.
In a Lonely Place is kino
Because the 1950s was a terrible time for American cinema and he was one of the few shining lights during that decade.
I think Rebel Without a Cause is one of, if not the most, overrated films ever.

Didn't Godard say that "Cinema is Nicholas Ray"?
>>80288182
If anything he's really underrated. 50s cinema is really defined by him.

Daily reminder that he got cucked by his 13-year-old son

>Grahame's fourth and final marriage was to actor Anthony "Tony" Ray, the son of her second husband Nicholas Ray and his first wife Jean Evans; Anthony Ray was her former stepson. Their relationship reportedly began when Tony Ray was 13 years old and Grahame was still married to his father (which effectively ended the marriage when Nicholas Ray caught the two in bed together).[12] The two reconnected in 1958 and married in Tijuana, Mexico in May, 1960. The couple would go on to have two children: Anthony, Jr. (born 1963) and James (born 1965).[13]

Yeah and Truffaut also had a massive boner for him as well
He's perfectly rated.
He only had like 2 hit movies and are largely forgotten these days.

The fact that he is not a household name does not preclude him being overrated
