It's good, but completely unremarkable and forgettable.
>>
My version of the end of Spotlight:
>the article is ready to publish
>BAM WTC happens and no one gives a shit
>priests still rape
>families still suffer
>>
Such an underwhelming experience.

No outstanding performances, no outstanding scenes, no outstanding score, no outstanding editing.

Just.

Here's what happened, the end.

To think it won an Oscar for best picture.

It seriously felt like a high budget BBC docudrama.
>>
>>80250570
the same as Room but Room is considered masterplaster
>>
>>80250542
but the WTC attacks happened before the story got published
>>
I thought Spotlight was kino.

Oh well.
>>
I don't get how the Academy went from voting this derivative crap as BP one year to something as stylistically and thematically modern as Moonlight the next.

Maybe they really do just vote based on social importance and skip actually watching the films

>>80250570
There really are no scenes in this at all. Everything is exposition, either characters walk and talk or they sit in a semi-circle and tell each other things. All the President's Men was so much more engaging and 70% of that film is one sided phone conversations. You could probably teach a course on directing by comparing the two films, and how ATPM visually holds your attention so well despite being 40 minutes longer and telling almost exactly the same story
>>
>>80250631
You're not alone friend.

Although I hate his politics, I thought Ruffalo's performance was great
>>
The best/worst part of the movie was Ruffalo's accent and that speech he gave about touching da kids.
>>
It was a good movie, people will bitch about anything that wins an oscar no matter what it is.

>>80250570

That's the point.

The stillness and stoicism of the movie is suppose to leave nothing but the elephant in the room. The fact that children were raped by people who are suppose to be pillars of the community, and no one cared.

There is no flashy music. No breathtaking cinematography. Just cold hard facts that no one seems to want to confront. Its two hours of just facing the truth.

The fact that the movie just seemingly is ignored shows how true and horrible it all is.
>>
>>80250570
This. You can also add in the fact that the underlying story was incredibly underwhelming. At best, the Spotlight team faced mild opposition from the church. I never really felt any sense of conflict while watching the film.
>>
>>80250449
>>
>>80250682

Agreed, besides the shouty speech which screamed Oscar reel material.

But I liked how still the entire film felt. Everything was exactly the way it needed to be. It was cold and hard facts, plus a great ode to days when great journalism actually mattered.
>>
>>80250615
I would change the story a bit
>>
>>80250726
Who in the world isn't aware of priests fucking kids at this point? It's been a joke for as long as I've been alive, no one was shocked by this fictionalized movie on the topic. Watch a doc like Mea Maxima Culpa for real disgust at this, with real people and pain from it.

Spotlight is the worst kind of social problem picture that lets the audience click their tongues and think "I would have done that good deed too" then forget the whole thing. It's a movie about the good guys that sympathize with the victims, not the actual hard story of the victims themselves

And there it is. Its a joke. Its not something that needs to be dealt with. Its not an immediate social issue that needs to fixed. Its a joke.

The more movies that throw it in peoples faces the better. We've got people marching in the streets because the president says something people don't like. People need to re-excamine their priorities.

I guess because I said "marxism" you instantly thought stalin. You're confused. "cultural marxism" is pretty much just a /pol/ maymay which means to apply current western values to all cultures and all points in history. Or something.

So basically saying journalism is always been nothing but moronic mindless clickbait would be that.

You're assuming lots of things, which I don't think (or did not intentionally) imply. How are you trying to apply "cultural Marxism"? My example was just to counter your statement that there was great journalism 10 years ago. There are some individuals, I'll admit, but the overarching theme in American journalism, has always been a political slant, thus my invocation of the 1970s as All The Presidents Men" and the witch hunt against Nixon were central to that decade, and the journalism of the 1930s. Again, not saying it's all mindless clickbait, only that it has it's slant, which will corrupt any true journalism, as objectivity should be the goal. I'm not sure what you're talking about with act of god or miss translations, but the guy said everything was A-OK, while millions of people went on to die.

La La Land was the most obvious "winner" I can remember.

Say what you want about it but it had decent performances, a few kinda memorable scenes and it was the first oscar winning picture that appealed to normies since Slumdog Millionaire. It won nearly every single pre-oscar best picture award in the awards circuit, it got 14 nominations and it still lost for no other reason other than Moonlight being the perfect sorry to black people.

The oscars fucking hated the bad publicity they got for the #sowhite shit, hence why they invited every single black actor and actress to present awards and allowed Chris Rock to turn the whole show about black people.
>>
>>80252504
The point of which you seem ignorant of is how before [current year], there were actual, enforced, directives in place to ensure strict levels of journalistic integrity and ensure overall centered and unbiased reporting. Journalists could wiggle around in these directives a bit, but, overall, they either stayed center or their career ended.

Hell, back in the 90s larry king accidentally said something committal about abortion and the media was acting like this would completely end his career forever.

So acting like journalism has always been shit because people reported misrepresented facts that were later found to be intentional misrepresented is just fucking stupid.

>reported misrepresented facts

But this isn't true, Duranty was in the Soviet Union, it was HIS JOB, to investigate, he was either too lazy, or too biased to this correctly, and the same with Nixon, something similar to what had been done in the LBJ White house became a national sensation warranting impeachment. The press' favorable coverage of FDR indicated their slant in the 30s. I'm not talking about one event, but a whole string of them, the press corps isn't called the 4th estate for nothing. I'm not applying my current year worldview, but making observations of the past years.

For priests / molesting kids joke don't priests actually molest kids at lower than the rate of the average population?

Aren't school teachers & social workers more likely to molest children than priests by a small fraction of a percent or so?

Certainly coaches or gym teachers molest them the most I'm sure. I remember two of my public school gym teachers the girls kept complaining that he'd walk in on them too much to you know update them on some completely bullshit thing.

So duranty is shit, in your mind, because he was (led) all over the soviet union and found no godly evidence of a famine, and reported exactly that. As, ya know, definitions change.

Not to mention because he didn't report that the people with guns and agents fucking everywhere were intentionally starving people, hes shit, because, again, he found a way to report the truth that now, because the concept/definition of famine has nothing to do with "God," makes it seem like he was lying/stupid.

And you're defending this mindset, tooth and nail, that is purely built around modern western cultural values and concepts being applied to all points in history.

You're either intensely stupid or doing this on purpose for the attention.
>>

>So duranty is shit, in your mind, because he was (led) all over the soviet union and found no godly evidence of a famine, and reported exactly that. As, ya know, definitions change.

He's a journalist, if he had any credibility he would have questioned this, when some schmuck goes to Syria, would he accept everything the Syrian government tells him at face value if he were a good journalist?

I'm not applying any modern values, except those of journalistic integrity, which are hardly modern. Again, this doesn't negate the overarching point that journalism for a long time, has had a bias for the progressive side of politics, thereby corrupting any measure of greatness. Certainly not Pulitzer Prize winning greatness.

And again, his bias was not something I concocted from my own personal application of values on the past.

>He wrote several books on the Soviet Union after 1940. His name was on a list maintained by writer George Orwell of those Orwell considered to be unsuitable as possible writers for the British Foreign Office's Information Research Department owing to the possibility of them being too sympathetic to communism or possibly paid communist agents.

What mindset am I defending anon? I've stated that journalism has for a long time been biased, this is not a mindset, but an assessment of the media and it's past.
