I'm not a fan of his style of comedy but I do enjoy reading criticism of him when a new segment goes up because it's an insight into how anti-fact retards operate.

Nah, it's just that his style of comedy is very hit and miss, and honestly shows no signs of being refined since the mid-2000s, in that way it's very dated.
Example, lots of buildup for a punchline that isn't worth the build-up, tarrying on subjects for too long without expanding on them sufficiently and so instead just comes across as milking it dry.

With this in mind, the /pol/tards do have an occasionally valid point. Oliver is excessively vain. He knows his audience is mostly liberal and often lacks the discipline to create a tight, well-paced program (Stewart was great at this, and Conan is the goat.) This tends to push Oliver to meander and posture for claps and karma points at the expense of the program.

This 'putting himself first' mentality extends to his non-partisan segments as well.

For example, his Dalai Lama episode is 90% clap-baiting for the fact that he actually went to India OMG, and filler, with only 10% of the actual segment being worth the trip.

Partisanship bringing down the quality of his show is a valid concern though. Look at his coverage of the Scotland referendum vs. the Brexit referendum.

In the former case, it's a smooth ride of banter that points out the hilarious aspects of both sides well while establishing context.

In contrast, his Brexit coverage was essentially a short, humorous build-up followed by 'NO DON'T LEAVE PLS IT'LL START WW3.'

It's jarring, out of character, and completely suspends disbelief that you're watching a comedy show and not a sermon on what to think.
