Is there some precedence to the whole vampires vs werewolves thing? Or did it start with this movie?
>>80248713
It definitely didnt start with this movie, I am curious where the trope of "Vampires vs. Werewolves" did start though
>>80248713
There were some crossover movies in the forties.
>>80244866
very fun movie
i didn't like the dracula but village scenes are tight
>>80248713
It's not even the first Vampires vs Werewolves movie starring Kate Beckinsale.
Vampires vs Werewolves is a semi-logical match up since they appeared in similar stories from similar writes during a similar time and shared an audience. In the 90s it became a staple of bad goth fan fiction and pen and paper RPGs (which Underworld was largely based on).
Personally, I sort of like vampires (although I'm not a huge fan) but find werewolves very dull.

>>80249889

>>80248813
>but find werewolves very dull
Werewolves have been pretty badly handled, I think, and quite one dimensional. They come from a pretty specific place that isn't terribly relatable anymore - the fear of wolves. The vast majority of the western world doesn't have it anymore, and there's little reason to, we killed a ton of them off. Ireland used to be infested with them and was known colloquially as Wolf Land up until the 1700s when they were systematically genocided. France's native wolf population was decimated into near extinction in the 1760s with the Beast of Gevaudan panic - a werewolf panic, no less. Wolves are fucking huge, easily as big as a person, and we tend to forget that. Huskies look wolfish but are inbred dogs, they lack the sheer size of true wolves.
In stories and legends, werewolves had a satanic aspect to them, people performed rituals or donned magical items to transform into them. The Beast of Gevaudan, one of the men accused of being the werewolf, claimed he had received a wolf skin and ointment from a nameless 'Master of the Forest', when he rubbed the ointment on his skin and donned the pelt, he became a werewolf. In the 'Werewolf Rock' legend from Germany, there's a magical belt which you put on to become a werewolf. Nowadays, after stuff like American Werewolf in London, we always assume a physical, and always painful transformation, and I think it removes some of the alien, mystical nature of the werewolf.
>>80249512
>old hunter top hat
>gascoigne garb

looks decent for its time but still dated. what i like about older cgi, which you see in movies like this and lotr. is that whatever they're making seems to fit into the background better than modern stuff. like todays cgi is really, really good but t always seems jarringly separated from the set pieces. look at this from fantastic beasts, it looks like its popping 3d outta the screen rather than being part of the movie.
>>80249478
exactly my thoughts. Everything the critics disliked about it is what gets you a 80%+ on RT nowadays
The outfits are great in this, the clothes they put Kate in are the stuff of legends.
>>80252093
modern movies try so hard to make CGI "realistic" or super detailed, and forget to make it fit in the scene.
the Van Helsing Dracula/gabriel fight is amazing because while they are CGI, it seems to me- (and I may be wrong) that the set is real, and actually gets damaged practically.
which if true, is astonishing
