They're pretty different, Henry Hill is a kid who just wants to be a mobster, and Sam Rothstein just ultimately wants to be a very autistic businessman. The narration is better in Goodfellas but I liked Rothstein more, and the fact that the Teamster's Fund remains on the periphery makes his operation seem a little more normalized. Rothstein's role in Casino is so absurd and so normal at the same time. I like seeing De Niro attempting to keep these ludicrous characters in line. There's too much of Nicky and Ginger but they're funny characters. The only dramatic problem is that Pesci is always the one to wrap things up... De Niro or Liotta just have to deal with it.

Casino is just too damn long. You cut out some of the shit with Sharon Stone and I'm sure it would get better. Lester is a great pimp, but that storyline just kind of went nowhere. We don't need two separate stories about her fucking Lester and giving him tons of money and her fucking Nicky.

I think it's also slightly disjointed in that the story shifts from the Golden Jew to Nicky in the second half of the movie. It's kind of weird that Sam takes a bit of a backseat, and he's just reduced to a guy getting cucked who ends up wearing an 80 year old woman's glasses.
