patrician's choice
>>
>>80215400
it's cliché but Vertigo is by far his best because its psychological aspects are the most mature and mysterious.

The Birds is probably his worst. I'm still amazed that anybody likes that schlock at all.
>>
>>80216007
no that would be Rope or Strangers On A Train based Farley
>>
>>80215400
Shadow of Doubt> North bi northwest
Cotten>>>>>EVERYONE
>>
I fucking despise Hitchcock, but I love Brian DePalma. What's up with that?

Vertigo is probably my favorite, even though I didn't like it very much the first time I saw it. Now I think it's one of the best movies I've ever seen.
>>
>>80216199
You're a disgusting pleb. You'd like Hitch more if he showed tits.
>>
>>80216199
you don't appreciate historical precedent? Without Hitchcock De Palma wouldn't be who he is. Vertigo is still more mature and groundbreaking than anything De Palma has done since.
>>
>>80216199

>Brian DePalma

you like it fucking grotesque
>>
>>80216216
That one takes a few watches but it's one of the greatest, I think it might be because James' character is so unlikeable in it
>>
>>80215400
NXNW was an interesting plot, but the pacing of the movie was way too slow for me. I know it was typical for the time but it got on my nerves. Could have been better at 90 min and very fast paced IMO.
>>
Just watched his remake of The Man Who Knew Too Much. Thought it kinda sucked except for the Albert Hall sequence, which is a 10/10. The worst of his movies I've seen so far.
>>
>>80216216
i might watch it again then

Hitchcock is a good entry drug for a lot of other great things. You can slide right into this kind of stuff.
>>
>>80215400
This isn't the best movie ever made, but it's the best "hollywood" movie ever made. If someone didn't know what an American movie was, I'd show them this

Aw shit nigga, watch it.

Top ten

1. Shadow of a Doubt
2. Notorious
3. Vertigo
4. Psycho
5. Rear Window
6. Rebecca
7. North by Northwest
8. Spellbound
9. Strangers on a Train
10. Rope

Overrated as hell fuck you eat a dick: The Birds
>>
>>80216230
I don't really care about tits, I actually hate sex scenes in movies.
I should've prefaced this by saying I've only seen five De Palma movies, and only four were good.

>>80216247
>you don't appreciate historical precedent?
Not really, and Vertigo is garbage.
>>
>>80215400
This movie is fucking awesome, anyone that says otherwise probably likes watching their woman get fucked by gay niggers.
>>
>>80216697
>I've only seen five De Palma movies, and only four were good.
Which ones?
>>
>>80216697

It's time to move on to Mann, anon. You've got a taste of the visceral.
>>
>>80216735
The Fury, Phantom of the Paradise, Carrie, Blow Out.
Scarface is terrible.
>>
>>80216778
>It's time to move on to Mann, anon.
Manhunter is great. Haven't gotten to any other Mann movies yet though.
>You've got a taste of the visceral.
What do you mean?
>>
>>80215400

North by northwest and Psycho are on the top of my list. No competition.

Vertigo > The birds > Strangers on a train > the Rope > Rear window
>>
>>80216781
>Scarface is terrible.
Wrong.

But anyway, you'd probably really love Dressed to Kill.
>>
>>80216508
>>80216571

> Not Sunset Blvd.
>>
>>80216830

It's a different aestethic taste than something like Spellbound or Cape Fear. You need more immediate engagement.
>>
>>80216677
Glad to see some love for Shadow of a Doubt. There's a reason this was Hitchcock's favorite film of his.
>>
>>80216887
>a movie that requires knowledge of movies in order to truly appreciate

No.
>>
Dial M is the best.
Strangers on a Train is the worst.
>>
>>80216677
No Lifeboat?
>>
>>80216911
I think I get what you're trying to say, that I need the visuals to be more dynamic or something, right?
I'm not the perceptive, but I'm trying.
>>
>>80216007

I preferred Disturbia. It had better effects.
>>
>watch Vertigo
>that was okay, but vastly overrated
>think about it
>watch it again a year later
>watch it a third time again
>realize it's perfectly rated

amazing film

I felt the same way, but after repeat viewing, it's excellent.
>>
>>80217100

>Disturbia

There should be a list of essential creepo core with things like this or nightcrawler or blow up.
>>
>>80215400
Overrated hack. Specializes in dragging cliches out to be as slow and boring as possible. Vertigo is probably his least worst but even that's not good.
>>
>>80216077
>The Birds is probably his worst. I'm still amazed that anybody likes that schlock at all.
It's Snakes on a Plane-tier trash. The only reason people take it seriously is because they fell for the "Hitchcock is a good director" meme.
>>
>>80216913

Shadow is less popular I think just because Cotton didn't have the star power of Hitchcock's other leading guys although his performance is amazing and much more subtle than a typical Hitchcock role.

Shadow of a Doubt needs to be discussed more as a influence on Blue Velvet because it absolutely was.
>>
>>80216332
>pacing of the movie was way too slow
>typical for the time
No, it's just Hitchcock being shit. There are movies from the 20s that are more exciting than any of his.
>>
>>80217222
I think the movie is pretty flawed. It has great moments, and Cotten is amazing in it, but I don't think it's great through and through like so many of his other movies.
>>
>>80216917
Sunset Boulevard at least doesn't put you to sleep. NXNW is like James Bond: Boring Edition (and excepting the Roger Moore ones, Bond films are boring enough already).
>>
>>80217330
Go away.
>>
>>80217265
Not the anon you replied to, but The Birds is schlocky and 1950's version of The Man Who Knew Too Much sucks, yet they're very well known for being excellent movies.
>>
>>80217330
>NXNW is like James Bond: Boring Edition
Well that certainly is an opinion. Why do you find it boring?
>>
>>80215400
Why didn't they just shoot him from a car?
>>
>>80217448
Every scene drags on too long.
All the characters are retards.
I don't care if anybody lives or dies.

And it has nothing to do with age, there are plenty of older movies I loved.
>>
Reminder that The Wages of Fear is several magnitudes better than every movie Hitchcock ever directed.
>>
>>80216887
Sunset Blvd is a yanks attempt at German epressionism
>>
>>80217523
I'm this anon >>80216508
so it's interesting to hear from people who don't like the movie. A lot of Hitchcock movies have a very deliberate pacing, which I can see how that annoys people
>>
>>80217629
>yank
>Director grew up in Germany
>>
>>80217603

Great shit, different purpose.
>>
I really fucking love Rope. It might be a pleb reason, but I really like those long takes.
>>
>>80217792
Suspense is a mutual purpose.
>>
PERSONAL HITCH LIST
1. Psycho
2. Rear Window
3. Strangers/Train
4. Vertigo
5. North by Northwest
6. Foreign Correspondant
7. Rope
8. I Confess
9. Lodger
10. Man/Too Much ('56)
