I don't use reddit (except for porn) and I think R&M is funny for the improv scenes and the sci-fi references. The characters feel human because of their obvious flaws. The voice acting is great. The serious moments contrast with the wacky random humour nicely. It's a great show.

I really hate the show. I think it fails horribly at black comedy because it tends to show the characters suffering, which to me evokes sympathy. I think the creators and viewers must be rather sheltered and don't understand loss or grief. Black comedy makes light of dark situations... Rick and Morty revels in it's own darkness like it's trying to cop Warhammer 40k's GRIMDARK style and it's cringey to watch.

There's one episode that basically admits it: At one point Morty tells his sister hte world is basically meaningless because there are infinite universes where everything can happen. And then, he tells her to come and watch TV with him.

That's ultimately what the show is. There is no soapbox, no deeper message, I wouldn't even say there's atheism wank because even Rick gets BTFO by his own failings in the second season. It's just a bunch of assholes who can never overcome their personal flaws interacting with an inconsistent world of pastiches.

It's a show made entirely out of clickbait. It's just going "HAW, look at this stupid provocative thing happening! Everybody laugh, also pop culture references that will be dated in a year or two!" over and over again.

Daily reminder that the only reason /tv/ hates this show so much is because it bridges the gap between "normies" and people like them.

Shit like R&M have a number of factors which make /tv/ go rabid about it. For one, it's popular. Then, the normies who watch it misconstrue it as "intelligent humor" and get pretentious about it, while also vastly overhyping a show which has its decent share of flaws, bad eps, failed jokes, etc. This board, hive of contrarianism and its own brand of pretension, compensates by going in the complete opposite direction, resulting in a near-cringeworthy hatedom.

Ultimately it really deserves none of the love nor hate thrown its way; it's neither bad nor perfect. But it's just one of those shows that fosters extreme dichotomy.

I dunno, I like Rick and Morty. It's a silly little show with some of the better current animated humor and great voice acting. It's not one of the best shows ever like some say, but it works well enough for me.
