I'm not qualified to say anything about it from watching the first episode alone but it felt like a fuck around to watch.

In the comics David absorbs those who die around him as personalities. This is likely still the case when you remember the end of episode where David is in his mind being yelled at by tons of people.

What's likely is Benny was the previous 'friendly' incarnation of the DYE, and Lenny was real in the first episode. Since David saw her as a friend, the DYE is now wearing this fragment of her, and dubbed over all of the old 'Benny' memories with her to placate David's mind.
