He's talking about the 4th Crusade which led to the sack of Constantinople at the hands of Crusaders thanks to the utter incompetence of the Byzantine Emperor [so your standard Byzantine Emperor]. If the Crusade would have actually proceeded as planned, the Empire would have not been a rotting carcass but a somewhat powerful entity that would have survived 1453

Justinian fucked up by overextending; he had a great vision, but his mistake was trying to do in one generation what should've taken at least three or four. The West fell in flash, sadly it couldn't be taken back that easily.

The final Sassanid Persian War was solely the fault of Phocas, who gave the Shah a casus belli, since he was raised by Maurice (who really shouldn't have been deposed, Phocas was a bitch who ruined everything.

Imagine being Heraclius, after having defeated the Sassanids utterly at Nineveh after previously loosing all of the eastern provinces; returning to Jerusalem carrying the true cross in a Triumph; only to loose it to Muslim Arabs a few years later. Not only that, but recognizing that, again, victory was hopeless and then retreating back over the Taurus Mountains; effectively abandoning the East to save the Empire.

How could you deal with that?

There are generally accepted orders (Subject Object Verb being common), but you can rearrange a sentence however you like as long as the conjugations are done correctly. That being said, OP, I would only change the third line, because that's kind of pushing it. It's acceptable English order, but wonky for Latin
>>
>>80212333

>>
>>80212409

Magnus is nominative as it's referring directly to the guy, so yes.
>>
>>80212409
Since it's the accusative, it would be magnum hominem, or, better: hominem magnum. Since hominem (man) is the direct object of the sentence, the accompanying modifier (magnum) has to match it in case. Tu, which is the nominative, is, like you said, not necessary to include.

Hominem magnum es.

The extent of my memorized conjugation doesn't go too far past that, but I will mention that latin wiktionary is a great resource.

I don't know exactly what you're trying to say with the sum/esse never taking accusative, but in the sentence (You) [lol] is the subject. Es is second person present active indicative (god i hope i'm right on this), and it means You are. Es is just the verb and doesn't really have too much to do with the conjugation of the noun.

Anyway, in English it is you are a big man. You is the subject, the one performing the action (are [being]). Man is the direct object, the thing directly being affected by the "are". In Latin, direct objects are accusatives, and the accusative sense for this declension calls for homo (nominative) to be hominem. So, magnus MUST change to match the noun. Hence magnum.

How long have you studied Latin? My books arrived today and I'm pretty excited, though it seems daunting simply from what people say about it.

What's really the daunting part, the grammar or the vocabulary?

That's unrelated.

>>80213743
Vocabulary is EASY. Grammar is harder... overall Latin isn't hard though, you'll pick it up fast.

I already have a firm grasp on English (thankfully I was recognized as "gifted" in reading and writing in elementary school, so I was placed into advanced courses which I was able to handle just fine) and its grammar, so it's just a matter of adjusting and learning a new thing here and there.

>>80213848
I'm actually self learning, since they don't teach it in k-12 anymore and my Uni doesn't offer Latin or Classics in general.

Five years in high school. Which is now six years ago.

Vocabulary is pretty easy, especially if you are familiar with Romance languages.

The grammar is harder. Every thing you can imagine that modifies the meaning of a word changes the ending. Latin doesn't have a strict word order. Mostly the infinite ways to write verbs are annoying.

You're right about es being the second person present active indicative. The point of contention here is that 'sum/es/est/sumus/estis/sunt' does not take the accusative. Like, 'you are' isn't really a an action (let's not get philosophical, lol). I mean, just think back to the beginning of any intro Latin course, you always learn 'sum' first, even though it's fairly annoying to conjugate compared to regular verbs, because it means you can just focus on the nominative. https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Latin/Lesson_5-Accusative
See here under 'Grammar: The Accusative'
>>
>>80208093
Malum?
>>
>>80213977
Ah, I'm envious. Like I mentioned here >>80213954, they don't, or rather didn't, teach Latin or any of the classical languages in my school(s), nor do they offer it at my current University. I'm having to resort to self learning which I've always been...not so great at except when it comes to computers.

Do you have any advice to give a young beginner like me? Would it be prudent to actively take notes and translate/associate the English term/meaning with the Latin term?
>>
>>80214083
another anon here, but I guess I'd recommend just following along with a good textbook (was taught with Cambridge Latin, did the job just fine), and also just spending some time memorizing declensions/conjugations, because knowing those is half the battle.

I am the files of my flight plan
Steel is my body and plane fuel is my blood
I have created over a thousand plane crashes
Unknown to Jannies,
Nor known to Normalfags
Have withstood bans to create many threads
Yet, those hands will never get to bring friends
So as I pray, Unlimited Plane Works
