In 1973, hunter-tracker James Conrad (Tom Hiddleston) is hired by government agent Bill Randa (John Goodman) to guide an survey expedition to an uncharted island in the Pacific Ocean known as "Skull Island". Randa recruits a military unit led by Colonel Preston Packard (Samuel L. Jackson) to escort them there, and the group is later joined by pacifist photojournalist Mason Weaver (Brie Larson), who believes the survey to be a cover for a military operation and plans to expose it.

Arriving in Skull Island, Packard's men begin dropping explosives developed by seismologist Houston Brooks (Corey Hawkins) to determine if the the ground is hollow, despite Conrad's objections. Suddenly, the helicopters are attacked by the mighty Kong and the team is separated in smaller groups. Packard confronts Randa, who reveals his affiliation to the secret government organization Monarch and the expedition's true purpose to acquire evidence that monsters exist. Packard and his remaining men led by Captain Earl Cole (Shea Whigham) then bury their dead and begin searching for the missing members of the expedition.

Meanwhile, Conrad, Weaver, Brooks, biologist San Lin (Jing Tian) and soldiers Glenn Mill (Jason Mitchell), Reg Slivko (Thomas Mann) and Marcos Reles (Eugene Cordero) run into the local natives and meet Hank Marlow (John C. Reilly), an American pilot who has been stranded on Skull Island since World War II. Marlow reveals that Kong is the island's guardian and is worshipped as a god for the natives for protecting them to the Skull Crawlers, reptilian monsters that live underground. Kong's ancestors were slaughtered by the Skull Crawlers, leaving him as the last of his kind, and he only attacked the helicopters to prevent their bombs from awakening the dormant Skull Crawlers, but it's too late and they are already targeting the humans.

The two groups eventually meet up and plan to leave the island, but Packards insists on searching for his right-hand man, Major Jack Chapman (Toby Kebbell), who is still missing. Marlow leads them to the Forbidden Zone, a forgotten battleground between Kong's ancestors and Skull Crawlers, where they are attacked by a Skull Crawler that has already killed Chapman and kills Randa as well. Conrad and the soldiers manage to kill it. Packard blames Kong for the death of his men and retrieves explosives to lure Kong into a trap. Conrad and Weaver prevent Packard from killing Kong and point out Kong was only defending himself and protecting them from the Skull Crawlers. The soldiers decide to spare Kong and prepare to leave with Conrad and Weaver, but Packard refuses to let him go.

The group is suddenly attacked by the Skull Crawlers, and Packard stays behind as the others flee, intending to detonate the explosives once the monsters are close enough that the blast will kill them all. Kong manages to escape and crushes Packard. An injured Kong is then overpowered by the Skull Crawlers, which then chases the survivors as they race towards the boat. Cole attempts to sacrifice himself to kill the pursuing Skull Crawlers, but is tail-whipped into a mountain before he can set off his grenades.

One of the creatures ambushes the humans but is then killed by the returning Kong. Aided by Weaver, Kong kills the remaining Skull Crawlers with explosives left behind by Packard and rescues Weaver after she is thrown into the river by the explosion. Kong then allows Conrad, Weaver, Marlow, Brooks, Lin, Mill, Slivko and Reles to return to civilization and resumes his rightful throne as the king of Skull Island.

In an after-credits scene, Conrad and Weaver are detained by Monarch and informed by Brooks and Lin that Kong is not the only monster to roam the world. They are then shown archive footage of cave paitings depicting Godzilla and several other giant monsters.

>depicting Godzilla and several other giant monsters.

They specifically show Mothra, Kingdora and Godzilla, some guy told me he saw some Pacific Rim suit during the end-credits flashbacks, but I never watched that movie, so I don't know if that statement is true
