Just marathoned the first episode last night. What did I think about it? Am I going to get caught up to season 2?
>>
>>80170379
You think it's pretty good but they take too many liberties from the source which you happen to like a lot and it's sort of pissing you off.

Still a pretty great show, as long as it strives for accuracy in all things Newtonian I'll be pleased.

You think it sets up a fascinating setting of politics and espionage in a human-inhabited solar system, but somehow isn't able to sustain it and becomes generic sci fi as it goes on. Regardless, you will still enjoy it for it's visuals, music, and characters.
>>
>>80170379
you found out that all dumb scenes on Earth were there because it's a book adaptation.
>>
There at at least 9 books written or planned. You think Syfy wlll allow a show to go on that long?

Don't even bother getting invested.

Even when it was SciFi, the longest shows ever ran for was 4 seasons.

Hope you faggots enjoy reading.
>>
Wait are you asking me what YOU thought about it?

Ok, you thought it was kinda a slow start, but the setting is fairly unique and there are interesting things happening. You think Ade is really hot. You think it's worth giving a shot, and the special effects are amazing.

>>
>>80171117
The show is already changing the pacing, inserting fanfic and resorting sequences of events for narrative purposes. To expect it to track the books going forward is a bit silly. It will gradually slide further and further from the books, if it gets more seasons. Which is pretty doubtful.
>>
>>80171117
>You think Syfy wlll allow a show to go on that long?
SG-1 lasted 10 years. 8 of them were on SciFi I think, and 6 or 7 of those seasons were pretty fucking good.

The spinoff series after probably dragged it out close to 15 years.
>>
>>80171117

It could get picked up by netflix if syfy drops it
>>
>>80170379

Definitely the best sci-fi show in years. Even if it had few weak episodes and bad scenes.

The only problem is it'll probably get canned in a season or two.
>>
>>80171537
>Netflix doing anything that actually requires special effects

Nah.
>>
>>80171492
SG-1 had the last 5 seasons on SciFi, probably only greenlit the last one so they could break the Smallville and X-Files records.

You're right about Atlantis though, that did last for 5, but was not cancelled because of low ratings, since IIRC the ratings improved over with the last season.

I think its because they don't want to pay raises after a contract is over. Farscape, Eureka, the list goes on.

Battlestar is an exception because Ronald D Moore ended the series instead of dragging it on

that tends to happen with most shows that are based on books though.

i don't even know which is better.

follows the books perfectly. then it's most likely boring to watch since you know exactly what's going to happen.

or pretend to be butthurt because it's different from what i've read previously.
>>
>>80171117
>Hope you faggots enjoy reading.
Yes i do actually but i watch scifi for the visuals and the waifus.
>>
>marathoned a single 45 minute episode

>follows the books perfectly.
that's a mild exaggeration

>or pretend to be butthurt because it's different from what i've read previously.
i am butthurt when they deviate from the source material, especially since the changes make no sense (make miller some sort of martyr/hero instead of being a total mess and footnote of history who happened to be in the right place at the right time)
>>
The show would be great if it weren't for the boring ass detective story arc.
>>

>some sort of martyr/hero instead of being a total mess and footnote of history who happened to be in the right place at the right time

Those two aren't mutually exclusive.

well, hopefully it was just an aside, but that scene of the belter kid Miller was staying with sermonizing about Miller with the larger-than-life print on the wall behind him was not in the books. After the first book, Miller is literally forgotten by everyone except Holden. Havelock brings him up, I think once

I really like the character Miller and I like Thomas Jane even more, but they are fucking up his character to make him more accessible to normies or whatever. They whitewashed his suicidal impulses and who knows what they'll do with teh aqua

He died. And his engine was what caused Mars to become a real independent state.
>>
>>80173353
The point was to introduce Solomon Epstein and his drive and why it was such a game-changer, but I really doubt plebs understood what was going on.

They still managed to fuck it up; why does the g-force he's experiencing rise over time? It should have been instant 5-10-whatever g's and he's pancaked into his chair unable to move the whole time it's burning. That's the point of the drive, it generates insane specific impulse.

That's the point of the perfected drive, the ones built after his maiden voyage. The original one, his, apparently lacks a limiter or regulator, so it just keeps accelerating in stages and the Gs increase incrementally throughout.

Because he hadn't had a chance to test it, he had no idea whether or not it would even work, much less what it would do. He had a suspicion it would be a highly-efficient drive, more efficient than what was currently in use, but he had zero idea it was going to be a game changer for the entire solar system. You can't exactly take precautions when you're basically clueless as to the conditions, and even his stupid spaceship that only understood Mandarin was working against him enough that he deactivated what precautions there were.

I got to episode 7 or so and decided to put it on hiatus for a while to marathon Firefly (which is far worse than The Expanse, but I've dug this hole now I must lie in it)

I remember at about episode 7 I kind of got lost in a few of the acronyms in regards to the politics.

From what I remember, there's an Earth and a Martian government that have lots of tensions.

Belters are basically the hard working slave class that's propping up those two societies, but they're treated like shit and want independence (as all belter stations, etc. are protectorates of either E or M?) The main one in the series with Mr Fedora being a protectorate of Earth.

Is that right? Where does all the acronyms fit in. I
>>
>>80178792

Pretty much. MCRN is Mars Congressional Republic Navy. OPA is Outer Planets Alliance, the Belter IRA-equivalent organization fighting for freedom. UN pretty self explanatory. I think that covers it?
>>
Are the books worth a read?

Because I don't think show is going to last many more seasons judging by the ratings. It's one of my favorite shows I've seen in the past few years, a shame really.

Cheers. I'll try it again once I finish Firefly, got 4 or so episodes left (don't think I can sit through the movie, though).

I figured I had the setting and what not down but I'm almost positive that it was some of the acronyms (or factional infighting) that was confusing me.

Really love the setting, though. I've had Elite: Dangerous on Steam for over 2 years now and The Expanse made me finally get into it and drop 20 hours over the weekend.

Completely different but the space trucking aspect is just comfy.

Only other thing that really pissed me off is they're using HOTAS Warthog joysticks everywhere, which is fine (any movie about planes or space uses them, anything with a drone operator has a couple, and Interstellar had a dozen)

But for some reason they're all turned the wrong way around, with the trigger facing you and all the buttons on the head of the joystick facing away from you. It's complete retardation and it's almost every episode. They even have a couple of Saitek joysticks (X-52 I think, I don't own that cheap plastic shit) but even they're the wrong way around)
>>
>>80179612
Is elite dangerous any fun? What's the gameplay like?

It can be quite repetitive I guess, it's basically Star Citizen lite but not a vapourware ponzi scam, but I'm really digging it.

Like I said, I'd recommend using a gamepad even if you have an expensive joystick, I've got everything I need mapped to it besides lateral movement (only needed while landing, and I use a docking computer anyway)

Can do pretty much anything, although some things are more viable than others. Can explore the galaxy (1:1 scale of ours, thousands of systems) and sell your data, can be a space trucker taking goods between stations for a profit, can be a bounty hunter or a pirate, can replace your cargo bays with cabins and be a cruise ship around the galaxy, or do some mining.

Like I said, I'm only about 19 hours into it and I'm really digging it, to the point where I'm really tempted to buy the expansion which adds things like multicrew (not yet in the game I think), landing on planets for exploration in a rover, etc.

I can't really compare it to anything else because I never could get into the X: games, and Star Citizen is just a mess right now. I played a bit of Wing Commander as a kid on my dad's PC, but that was just an arcade arena style game if I recall.

It's also super pretty, I wish I had the time to disable my UI and take more screenshots.

Don't sweat it too much Anon the actress will likely show up again a few seasons from now to play a much more fleshed out character who the story will spend a lot more time on.
She wouldn't be able to talk about that role now though because it will spoil things for anyone who hasn't read the books.
