Ah yeah this seems likely, and it's probably there to familiarize the casual viewer. That would also mean the story is 100% based around the Mondas cybermen, since there were loads of Mondas cybermen seen but hardly any New Who ones.

Not gonna happen because its pretty much confirmed it's about them having a conversion factory in a hospital. What I worry about though is them only being in it for 10 minutes, being presented as weak in comparison to the Nightmare in Silver ones, and having the new ones kill them all.

Maybe the 'preserve the cyberrace' aspect of the iron men cybermen is presented as a fault, and as a consequence, they recognise the Mondas guys as 'true' cybermen, so refuse to kill them.

On the other hand, the Mondas cybermen don't regard the Iron Men as real cybermen, so they're far less reluctant to kill them.

I really like he didn't count the War Doctor, he messes up the numbering because he wasn't in real-life between 8 and 9, so there's nowhere logical to list him, because he came up during 11s run. Plus his whole premise is not really being a doctor. Mad respect for not listing him.
>>
Just finished 'Closing Time' for the first time and really enjoyed it. I watched it at x10 speed in a spinning room full of neon lights whilst being repeatedly thrashed across the head with a copy of 'I Am A Dalek' by a man in Tritovore cosplay. I vomited a few times and hallucinated a giant cactus talking, but I think Craig's baby was a really well written character and the Cybermen were really good. Also great to see the Cybermats back.

Honestly, I don't see how you could do a story about the Time War that didn't suck.

Unless it's like Dead Romance, where the characters have even less idea what the fuck is going on than we do, the War is going to be a letdown.

Are the blu-rays any good?

besides the GOAT covers
>>
>>80175069

It would just have to be intentionally surreal. Shearman could pull it off. Apart from that, stories that are just ancilliary to it (like Mary's Story) are the way to go. I agree that an actual Time War series is near impossible to get right. Any typical episode just ruins the whole conceit. It all would have to be surreal and high-concept.
>>
>>80175519
Apparently the transfer's are pretty shite. I just got the DVD's instead, with the same covers. I've pre ordered the steelbook though.
>>
>>80175519
They look better than the DVD's but they're very slightly slowed down to 24fps which can be annoying for some.
>>
Where to start with Sixth Doctor audios?
>>
>>80175526
Going surreal works, but it has to be not as surreal for the Doctor as for us (and for any companions), and it's hard to sustain that. Shearman could pull it off once, maybe Simon Bucher-Jones (if he can get the hang of audios) or Lance Parkin… but I can't think of anyone who could do it repeatedly.

Alternatively, you could do the good parts of The Ancestor Cell without the crap parts—don't even show how they're fighting, but show the effects of history changing all around them. But again, that doesn't seem to be sustainable for multiple stories.
>>
>>80175835
Start with Marian Conspiracy, then follow the whole original Six/Evelyn saga from there.
>>
>>80175069
The main things you need to portray the complexity of a Time War are a rich imagination and a vast knowledge of sci-fi. Very few Doctor Who writers have that.
I'd say the only non-Miles Doctor Who story set during a Time War which manages to pull it off is The Taking of Planet 5.

>>
>>80175920
Yeah, that's exactly why I suggested Bucher-Jones. Stealing all the ridiculous time travel bits out of Lovecraft was genius.

Although actually, something that might work is sort of an anthology of sidesteps. A whole season where the Daleks, realizing the Doctor is the biggest threat, keep finding ways to shunt him into alternate timelines where the War isn't happening, and even after he realizes what they keep doing by the second episode, he still has to deal with winning The Infinity Doctors or whatever before he can reset himself back to the main timeline. And then, at the end, he finally gets to confront the group of Daleks with their Chronovore or whatever.

Right? Why is that?

I became a Doctor Who fan the summer before The Doctor, the Widow, and the Wardrobe aired. Then there was that long wait until August for series 7A to begin.

I guess I was just younger and it felt like more of a new experience, so maybe it felt like Matt with the bowties and the green screwdriver and the Tumblr era just lasted so much longer, for whatever weird mental reason.

Capaldi showed up in my freshman year of high school. Here I am about to graduate and it's felt like no real time at all.

Betting opened again on most sites by yesterday, and Marshall's odds have gone longer since then, while Coleman's have gone shorter.

He's had 2 seasons
and 3 Christmas episodes.
plus the upcoming 10th series
So if this years xmas is a two parter he'll have had 41 episodes.
>>

More importantly, the only time betting was suspended for 11, it was for Paterson Joseph, not Matt Smith. And it was suspended three times for 12, and Capaldi was only the last of the three.
>>
>>80177680
Yes, and in a few months, after we've had 40 episodes instead of 28, it probably won't feel nearly as new and short as it does today.
>>
have any of you seen david tennant as scrooge mcduck?
he's too aggressive and not gentle enough
>>
>>80177733
Seeing him with someone besides Clara might also make a big difference. Tennant went through three major TARDIS crews, Smith had two, Capaldi's only had one so far. Once he's had Nardole and Bill for a season, it'll probably feel more complete.
>>
>>80177823
He doesn't sound that bad here. There's only a few lines, but they're all pretty varied—he's aggressive in one, but casual in another, excited in another, etc.

Huey, Louie, and Dewey sound all wrong, though. Also, it seems like it's aimed at Euro fans who think Donald Duck is the greatest comic book hero ever, not at American kids.

The kids just sound like adults talking in their normal voices rather than any attempt at putting on a childlike voice. Similar to dipper and mabel I guess, maybe it's the latest meme for shows to do that so the young kid characters can be "cooler" or something

For me as a kid, that would have made them less cool. Imagine if Yakko, Wakko, and Dot sounded just like the grownups around them; who'd be interested?

But I guess today's kids grow up on totally different shows than I did, so maybe this really is what sounds cool to them.

Still, there's no way these three voices can pull off the barbershop-trio introduction Huey, Louie, and Dewey used to do all the time, so as far as I'm concerned, they fail. (Good thing I'm not the target demo…)

>>80179883
We do already have a story where Bill shows up in the first Shit Trips. "The Hybrid", which was pretty good.

The only thing is, I'm not sure I'll have the time to run Shit Trips 2 by the time Series 10 ends.
>>
>>80179883
Another idea I just thought of--have everyone write what they think the 14th Doctor will be like.
>>
>>80180085
>Bill and Nardole are strangers from different cultures.
And hopefully they'll make more use of that than with Turlough, Adric, or Nyssa. Jack and Rose were a little better, and given the way Lucas is talking, I'm hopeful… but still a bit worried.
>>
>>80180248
Good idea. Or maybe just generally "invent a new Doctor, don't worry about where (s)he fits in (unless it's important to your story)"?
>>
>>80180330
It go alongs with the idea I remember people mentioning from the creation of the first Shit Trips, where someone mentioned the second could focus on alternate Doctors.

How about it? Shit Trips 2: The (Even More) Non-canon Doctors Edition?

Nardole and Bill have different personalities from what little we've seen (Nardole is snarky/very cuddly/calm, and Bill's got what the kids these days call moxie.) This could be good, folks.

Tell me, in your own words, why series 8 and 9 were bad WITHOUT saying "Clara", "bad writing" (without explaining what you mean by this), or mentioning one of the maligned episodes i.e. "Hell Bent", "Kill the Moon", or "In the Forest of the Night".
>>
>>80180555
Series 8 was bad because it wasn't series 9, because it didn't have "Heaven Sent".

Do I get half a point?
>>
>>80180532
Yeah, very different personalities is a good start, but they could do that without being from different cultures. Amy and Rory were pretty different people, or Donna and Martha.

Nardole being from a future colony could add more than that, and I'm cautiously optimistic that it might.
>>
>>80180624
Series 5 was bad because it wasn't series 9, because it didn't have "Heaven Sent"
>>

>>

>>
>>80180937
Yes, they're complaining that it's the Clara Show because it's supposed to still be the Rose Show. Anything that isn't two years of the Doctor moping over Rose and then undoing her ending with an even worse ending and repeating that all over again is obviously not Doctor Who.
>>
>>80181015

>>
>>80180896
Wrong. Both are shit.
>>
>>80180555
I like Series 8 and 9. But if I was gonna tacle this, I'd sa, for Series 9:

"Lack of a focus on a thematic arc. Series 8 had a theme of Clara's* hubris, and how she needed to balance her companion life with her life with Danny; and even the episodes that people disliked, often served to carry that arc.

Series 9 didn't have as strong a thematic arc. There is the "Me" arc, but it doesn't truly seem like an arc until the very end. There is the "Hybrid" arc, but that also wasn't an arc. The episodes are often standalone, and each villain has some thematic parallel to the season (even Sleep No More, the overall most maligned ep, importantly shows that sometimes the Doctor screws up, and doesn't even know it), but it's just not as strong as Series 8's theme of "Doctor and Clara figure out themselves, and their relationship". Because of that, it's harder to defend Series 9's wonkier eps, whereas for Series 8, even the maligned eps have a very clear effect on Clara and 12's relationship, and I can relate each ep to the Series 8 arc. Yes, even the "maybe kids should be allowed to burn in a solar flare, so they can die with family" scene.

Also, Series 9's first ep has 12 acting wildly out of character, and convinced he's gonna die for reasons I still can't explain. I like Magician's Apprentice, but I can't explain why 12 thought he was gonna die

*I'm not mentioning Clara as a reason why Series 9 is bad, so I'm within the rules."

P.S.: Hell Bent is rather liked. Sleep No More, or even Woman Who Lived, would be a better "Series 9 maligned" ep.

Um it was back when Doctor Who was GOOD. Moffat's just run it into the ground...!
>>
>>80181463
The thing is, Moffat's faults (puzzle-writing, an aversion to logically paying off, instead preferring to give a payoff that makes emotional sense, although it may not be what fans wanted or expected), and Russell's faults (being a little shmaltzy; giving fans exactly what they want, perhaps being fan-pandery, while still giving a pretty good product; and knowing how to advertise the HELL out of a product, and drum up anticipation, which doesn't necessarily have anything to do with execution) are very different. You can easily like one, while hating the other.

For Chibs Who, I'd look into his original plans for Power of Three. We might get some high-concept Who out of him.
>>
>>80181633
>What the fuck, Doc?
Obviously, he was expecting the future from Whatever Happened to Susan Foreman, not the one from the Big Finish audios or the one from the EDAs. Once she got bored of David she just time-cubed her godparents back on Gallifrey and they gave her a lift back to the 1960s, where she eventually became an EU commissioner and lived reasonably happily ever after.

Before Moffat took over, he talked about how Doctor Who should do something with the fact that it's a show about time travel, and he had all kinds of great ideas for ways to do that. It turns out, he only had two great ideas for ways to do that. Because he's not a high-concept sci-fi writer. And neither is Chibs.

And that's fine. In fact, I think a high-concept sci-fi writer as sole showrunner would be a disaster.

Speaking of things that suck, how did "Something Inside" ever get made? I mean, most of the early BF stuff that doesn't work, I can at least see what they were going for. But this one?

Trevor Baxendale calls you up and says, "You know how Alien 3 is the best movie in the series? Plus, the thing I really miss from the EDA books was the way the Doctor kept getting amnesia, right? So, I was watching The Cube, and I realized that would be a great movie if you just took out the visuals. And the mystery. Also, we should make C'rizz psychic out of nowhere. And… well, maybe I can find a plot to tie all of that together, but if not, I can definitely throw in a 'sorry, Charley' pun."

Why did Barnes and Briggs say "Yes" instead of "Go to sleep and tell me if you still think that's a good idea tomorrow"?

There are plenty of valiant but failed experiments in Big Finish's early years, but this one doesn't seem like an experiment so much as just taking a lot of derivative ideas stolen from sources that aren't even very good and tossing them all in a blender. Recently, in western Europe, the "they took our jobs" thing has displaced most of the older stereotypes, but they're still around. To Germans they're drunken religious fanatics. To Brits they're robots who never smile.

basically them being dumb. Like there were "pollack" jokes when I was a kid...Like hitler marching his troops in backwards to make them think they were leaving...
There's a famous story, called coincidentally "Schlemihl goes to warsaw" in which the title character is polish, and stupid, leaves his home town for warsaw getting tired along the way taking a nap, carefully pointing his shoes in the direction he was walking as not to forget; a prankster comes along and turns them around, he wakes up heads in the direction of the turned shoes(towards from which he came;home) and concludes that instead of home he's infact in warsaw and everyone there. his friends and family, are just the warsaw version and the warsaw version of himself must be with his actual family.
I should mention that in some yiddish circles shlemihl is synonymous with idiot, however it's more accepted definition is someone with bad luck or fortune.
Also, pic related is a polish calculator.
I was imagining polish porn involving attempted penetration of belly buttons or something.

>I've never heard anybody talk about Tenth Planet like it was a good story.
Phil Sandifer manages to credibly make it sound like a good story on Tardis Eruditorum but I'm not sure he really buys it.

Huh, had no idea. The more you know...That's interesting, racial stereotypes aren't necessarily universal.

Kek, this is a funny interview Capaldi equally loved dogs and cats and he knows what trolling is.

On paper, Tenth Planet sounds like a cool idea. The Doctor has to face off against aliens who've shed their prior personality in order to survive. And in the end, the Doctor has to do just that, but without getting rid of his emotions.

Its one of those things you dont hear anymore. I had to really think about whether or not it was actually a thing. Today is really a completely different world, better.
We're well! she should be along shortly. She's out getting my birthday cake and what not for tomorrow. Pineapple upside down cake. I'm pretty excited.

It's actually kind of frustrating that we can't at least get a minisode showing Simm to Gomez regeneration.

I don't have the links, but there's a website that has a serious list of these things, with links to scholarly articles, and another one that has a silly little matrix where you can read off the stereotype each country has about each other country.

Apparently the earliest American stereotype about Polish immigrants was that they were stubborn and secretive; the "Poles are stupid" thing came from German/Prussian Jews stereotyping Polish Jews as stupid.

Which explains why that joke above has "Schlemiel" in it.

As interesting as that sounds I'm not sure I want to go down that rabbit hole. It's kind of thing should be a relic of history despite how humorous some of them might be. Some stereotypes/jokes are just so absurd they're funny, though that's probably just the autism flaring up.

Have you booked your ticket yet /who/?
You do want to meet McGann and McCoy don't you?

It's interesting to me where this stuff comes from, and it helps you realize that really they're all completely absurd, not just the ones that are obviously so. After trading Polish jokes with an American (Poles are dumb meatheads) and a Slovakian (Poles are snooty intellectuals), it's pretty hard to take any Polish joke seriously.

It's easy in Austria. Doesn't matter what country (except Germany), it's the same stereotype: Fucking Poles/Russians/French/Americans/Chinese/Penguins/Time Lords, they don't appreciate Falco and they're all car thieves.
