Soviets sometimes let their artists take risks on things that didn't have to be commercially viable. Tark made the most of that.

I remember that the only reason he made Solaris was because he saw 2001 and did not like it, but I have always enjoyed 2001 more then Solaris. I have always wondered which would you guys consider at a more a higher level of directorial style? Kubrick or Tarkovsky? also would you say Tarkovsky is better than Bresson and Bergman?

Kubrick was way more narrative driven then Tarkovsky so really I would argue it boils down to personal taste.

Agreed, both had amazing technical skills, evident by the aesthetic value of their films that still hold up amazingly. But Tarkovsky made movies driven by emotion, intimistic expression and personnal thoughts, using the plot as a way to deliver those. Kubrick made plot driven movies and had a more objective, cold and distant protrayal of his characters and narratives, often searching for universal themes and new ways to approach the genres he worked on. Very different directors, each with their own distinct style of filmmaking.
